The Architecture Foundation, on behalf of Better Bankside, is delighted to announce the winner of a competition to design a modular, portable, secure cycle parking solution to serve the Bankside area of London. Studio Meda’s design integrates a simple roof structure providing shelter from the rain with the locking facilities required for the secure storage of bicycles. This competition forms part of Better Bankside’s ‘Smart Green Business’ Strategy; a project that involves working with member businesses to improve their environmental performance. The issue of cycle parking has been high on the agenda of Better Bankside for the last few years.
Giles Semper, Deputy CEO, Better Bankside said: ‘We were thrilled by the quality of all the schemes, particularly those that reached the shortlist. Deborah Saunt, Director, DSDHA comments: ‘The wide range of entries was really surprising and positively demonstrated the diverse culture of design that takes an active interest in this scale of the designing for the city. The Architecture Foundation is delighted to announce the launch of an open international design competition to design a modular, portable and secure cycle parking solution on behalf of Better Bankside Business Improvement District (BID). The Bankside Bikeshed design competition is open, but not limited to: architects, designers, artists, product designers, and related disciplines.

The deadline for registration and payment for the Bankside Bikeshed Contest is 16 Feb 2011. Tent London and The Lightbox are delighted to announce the shortlist for The Art Fund Pavilion architecture competition. The result is a clean, elegant and sustainable solution that would be instantly recognisable across Bankside.
This currently includes a free recycling scheme, public realm improvements and information events, as well as actively promoting cycling for commuting and work related trips though its Travel Planning programme.
Data from the Bankside Employee Travel Survey 2010 indicate that up to 17% of trips made to Bankside on a regular basis are by bicycle. This currently includes a free recycling scheme, public realm improvements and information events.
Data from a recent local survey indicate that up to 17% of trips made to Bankside on a regular basis are by bicycle. The Architecture Foundation encourages design teams to suggest flexible and innovative yet realisable designs for this portable structure.

Discussion with member businesses has highlighted the problem of finding space for cycle parking, particularly when premises are leased or in older buildings. Their elegant scheme – for which the title ‘shed’ seems somewhat demeaning – can work for both visitors & local employees, and can comfortably sit alongside the best of Bankside’s architecture. It is also actively promoting cycling for commuting and work related trips though its Travel Planning programme. The Art Fund Pavilion Competition entries were reviewed by a panel of judges that included the Director of The Architecture Foundation.
Better Bankside has therefore set a target to establish a secure cycle park in the western end of the BID area by March 2011.
