Level the ground where the bench will stand and put landscape fabric down to prevent weeds from coming up underneath.
I even stapled the fabric to the wooden foundation of the shed directly behind to discourage weeds from growing up in the gap.
Set two weathered lengths of 2 ? 2 set directly on the landscaping fabric and put the smaller part of the pallet on top of them to keep the pallet itself off the ground. Because it isn’t attached to the bench, the bench is easier to build and easier to move if necessary. Once the leg piece has been squared up with the pallet, mark where the screws will be placed. Pre-drill the holes in the leg pieces for the screws to make attaching them to the pallet easier.
Attach two 2 ? 2 pieces of wood the length of the sides and one 2 ? 2 piece the size of the width to the legs about halfway down to add strength to the legs. The final step was to put some wood preservative on the bench to help it survive and there you have it – a rustic, attractive place to plant seeds and seedlings without having to bend. Keep in mind, nursery containers have drainage holes in the bottom so the water cannot collect, it runs right out.
I'm Mike McGroarty and I'm passionate about plants, soil and everything that has to do with gardening!
This 4×4 farm table can be built for under a couple hundred dollars and will look amazing in your home. Dewalt makes some of the best quality tools on the market and I use this exact same 12″ Miter Saw.
The circular saw works well when needing to cut plywood boards and when making longer cuts. Once you have an air compressor and nail guns you’ll wonder how you ever got by without them. If you are serious about building concrete tables and counters, you will want to invest in a concrete polisher. Routers give you the ability to give wood projects rounded edges or pieces with a little more detail.
September 17, 2011 By Beckie Sarah from Thrifty Decor Chick has had a lot of excitement going on in her backyard with a pretty amazing patio project.
I enjoyed a delightful Thanksgiving dinner with a lovely family in a gorgeous home in Long Beach, LA, California. In appreciation for his hospitality, I decided to researched wooden or stone garden benches project for Michael.
Micheal’s property is placed in a woodsy residential setting rather than a row of ocean-front beach houses.

However, I can’t pass up the opportunity to point out that rustic benches can also be made from timber. Wooden garden benches typically cost a fraction of what a slate stone bench might cost, and given that they have their own unique charm, they are worth considering. This bench is great for larger lots and park-like yards, where lumber is abundant and where you might like a couple of benches spread around. This bench will be a welcome feature next to or in a large wild flower bed, or opposite a veggie garden, allowing the fresh food grower a break and some happy glances over his growing produce. Tip: For more refined wooden garden bench designs with instructions, see links at the end of this article.
To make this bench into a comfortable garden couch, see this How-to make a stone bench with backrest video here. If you are not familiar with using cement moulds, review the videos below to see how easy it actually is and learn tips-of-the-trade from the garden designer pros. What these videos reveal is that while these benches could be adorable on their own, you could equally place these in groupings.

The slightly smaller half will provide a raised area under the potting table for storage for extra pots. When attaching each leg, make sure that the leg and the pallet are squared up for levelness and strength. Frame in the pallet and legs with three 1 ? 4 boards – one the length of the back and the other two the length of the sides – and attached them on the outside for additional strength.
On the top of the bench nail 1 ? 2s cut to length to close the gaps between the slats if you like. Here is a great set that is full of many of the tools that will complete home improvement projects.
These use 5 inch industrial diamond polishing pads that allow you to create a polished concrete counter or table with ease. While the landscapers were doing their thing, Sarah tackled a project that she’s been wanting for a long time… a potting bench! However, home-owner Michael sighed he wished to add some contemplative garden space, that would take advantage of the yard’s beautiful corner viewpoint. Stone benches are unique in their serene & rustic feel, their durability and low maintenance. Given the temperate climate in southern California, a wooden garden bench could also last Michael a long time.
No wood-working skills required, but you must have some measuring skills and be able to use a chain saw (or know someone who can ~ wink) No nails required.

This clear 2-minute how-to make a stone bench video explains each step: from how to make a compacted gravel base to placing the wood seat, all steps are simple without mixed concrete.
I suggest you use materials in like with the quality of materials used for the main house as that determines the resell value of the property. Professional garden designers create unity by repeating design elements, and I suggest you do the same.

In addition to the clamping action, Jack Clamps have a jack function which helps hold up boards when you don’t have an extra hand.
This particular DeWalt orbital sander has 5 inch pads that go on and off easily because they attach using velcro. This set includes good quality sockets, wrenches, screw drivers, allen wrenches, and a number of bits. The smallest is perfect for putting up trim in your home, building picture frames, and trimming out furniture projects. Sarah’s sweet dad agreed to help her build the bench, so they were able to knock it out in only two hours.
Measure the exact location of each bench leg, and dig out the lawn in that location and fill each base with stabilizing material. The Kreg Jig system allows pocket holes to be drilled and to connect pieces of wood with screws (that are hidden from the surface) all in a matter of seconds. A compact drill is important for drilling pocket holes and using drill bits to create pilot holes. I love that Sarah will be able to think of the time with her dad whenever she sees the bench. This is what I commonly use to build great looking tables and furniture. Here is a link showing a table I assembled using the Kreg Jig Pocket Hole System. Impact drills come in very handy when attaching boards without using pocket holes and when you are having trouble with bits stripping.
