As the title indicates, 'Askhan, the Charmed Ring and Other Stories' is an unusual Iranian film. Here you will find no symbolic, aesthetic lingering on a leaf that falls from a mulberry tree, but instead a reckless cock-and-bull story with a twinkle in its eye and tricks up its sleeve. The debut feature director Shahram Mokri breaks all screenwriting course rules with his wild tale about (among other things) a police officer who is unhappily in love with a cashier, a sculptor who dreams of emigrating, a young man who constantly tries to commit suicide, and, in the midst of it all, two blind jewellery thieves, who are about to make the heist of their lives. The various threads of the narrative cross each other in unexpected ways, while the film leaps backwards and forwards in time - but all the pieces of the puzzle fall into exactly the right place at the end, even if they dont do so in the way one might expect. Filled with black humour, delivered at breakneck speed and with an endlessly surprising story, Mokri playfully presents a small act of genius. The fact that it takes place in an Iranian social context only makes it even more remarkable.
