Brennende Langeweile (Bored Teenagers)

Starring Ian Moorse, Monika Greser, Michael Dempsey, Roadent, The Adverts (TV Smith, Gaye Advert, Howard Pickup, Rod Latter).
Filmed in Germany in September 1978, it tells the story of unemployed punk fan Peter (Ian Moorse) and his girlfriend Karin (Monika Greser), both from the Sauerland, who go to see The Adverts in concert. Peter is a big fan of Gaye Advert (his bedroom is covered in posters of her). Karin would like to play in a band but her apprenticeship as a hairdresser is more important. They both get to know The Adverts personally and follow them on tour. After finding out that Karin has slept with Roadent (The Adverts´ roadie), Peter goes into Wuppertal where he meets Gaye Advert. They take a ride in the Schwebebahn (overhead railway) which gets stuck during a powercut. Worried that Gaye won´t make it in time for the next gig, Roadent is teaching Karin how to play the bass parts. Luckily, Gaye does make it back in time for the gig, and -- sigh! -- Peter and Karin get back together.
The film includes excellent live clips of the following songs: Gary Gilmore´s Eyes, Love Songs, Television´s Over, I Surrender, Great British Mistake.
Released on DVD by Sunny Bastards SBF 016, PAL Germany, September 2007. Extras include two-part Wolfgang Büld interview. Also includes 16 page booklet (in German) with detailed Adverts history plus TV Smith interview.
Big Untidy: "How did you get involved in Brennende Langeweile?"
TV Smith: "The director was a fan, had us in Punk In London, and when thinking of a band for his next project he thought of us. We were based in Wuppertal for three weeks for the filming, and the live footage was taken at gigs we played (specifically for the film) in Wuppertal, Cologne, and I think a couple of other towns in the Ruhrpott -- although I can´t exactly remember where. I haven´t actually seen Brennende Langeweile for nearly 30 years. My memory is
that the live tracks were good but the rest is pretty embarrassing. Maybe it´s improved with age. At least, after all this time, it´s an interesting historical document".
Big Untidy: "What was it about The Adverts, as opposed to any of the other punk bands at the time, that made you decide to get them involved?"
Wolfgang Büld: "The Adverts were one of my favourite bands and the plot required a band with a female member."
Big Untidy: "Where exactly was the live footage filmed?"
Wolfgang Büld: "The gigs were arranged by the film production for the film in
August/September 78. The first was in 'Whiskey Bill' in Rösrath, the second
in a club in Wuppertal, the third at 'Stollwerk' in Cologne."
Big Untidy: "Do the live recordings from these gigs still exist - if so, any idea who has them?"
Wolfgang Büld: "I used all the footage we filmed in Brennende Langeweile. But the Adverts´ managment had hired a soundcrew who recorded all of the gigs on a 24 track (I guess)."
