In 1944, Soviet forces occupied Lithuania for the second time in five years. Going directly against the principles of the Yalta Agreement, the USSR annexed Lithuania while the West turned a blind eye.
This feature-length documentary explores a footnote to the Cold War -- the Lithuanian resistance fighters who bravely (some might say foolishly) stood up to the Soviet Union in the years following World War II. These partisans - a ragtag band of simple country folk and patriotic students with little, if any, formal military training - waged guerrilla warfare on the occupying Soviet army.
The film focuses on perhaps the most significant of these resistance fighters, Juozas Lukša, an architecture student who quickly rose through the ranks due to his innate ability to lead. He escaped the Soviet Union to the West to seek support from abroad. While there, Lukša was recruited by the CIA to return to Lithuania and send information back to the Americans. During a brief stopover in Paris, he married his Lithuanian sweetheart, Nijolė Bražėnaitė. One week after their wedding, Lukša returned to his native soil only to be met with a broken resistance, a major manhunt, and the ultimate betrayal.
"The Invisible Front" features interviews with many of the surviving rebels, former KGB agents, the presidents of Lithuania and Latvia, and Lukša's widow, Nijolė Bražėnaitė. Supplementary footage and documents from the CIA and KGB archives tell the story of a war fought completely in secret to the West -- a war known amongst the Soviet Interior Forces as "The Invisible Front".
