In the spirit of TRAINING DAY and HIGH NOON this film is a powerful 24 hour story about the release of a notorious Latino leader from prison and the effect on all who knew him.
It reveals the devastating aftermath of LA's infamous Rampart scandal, which overturned convictions on dozens of unrepentant inmates. The film occurs over a single day, focusing on the release of MARCO CRUZ, his family, the cop who put him away, and the priest who testified against him. The picture opens five years after Cruz was convicted.
On the fateful morning, RICO PEREZ, a gentle 19 year old who escaped the gang life, tunes his street racer near the garage where he is their best mechanic. The beautiful LUCIA CRUZ, a stunning 17 year old, gives her boyfriend Rico the news of her brother's release.
The news travels like a brush fire. C-LOS, who took over both Cruz' gang and his gorgeous woman SERINA, tells henchmen to stakeout the Amtrak station where Cruz is likely to arrive from Pelican Bay.
C-Los' lieutenants are also dispatched to spy on both FATHER LUIS (Reni Santoni) at his church, and policeman ROE CONNER (Chino XL). Conner testified against Cruz at his trial, and Father Luis mounted a community campaign against Cruz to drive him from the community. Precinct boss Sgt. HANNIGAN (Robert Vaughn) is concerned that Cruz release will once again inflame dormant tensions.
As the news leaks out, Father Luis is urged by both his parish and Cruz' mother CARMELLA (Theresa Saldana) to leave LA. Carmella knows while she still loves her son, he has probably not forsaken his desire to exact revenge on Father Luis. But the Priest knows he has done the right thing, making his peace with God and preparing himself for whatever comes.
Nearby, just across an uneasy truce line from Cruz old turf, a tough black crew headed by D-DAY (Coolio) makes plans to also watch Cruz as soon as he gets off the train. D-Day gained much turf with Cruz gone, and knows with Cruz back in charge things will change for the worse.
As the train approaches, young lovers Rico and Lucia must thwart D's ambitions, convince Father Luis to leave town, and protect their own secret affair, knowing Cruz may go after Rico with his own hands for sleeping with Lucia, the only human being he cares about.
As in the legendary HIGH NOON, as Cruz races home to East LA, these tensions build to a fever pitch, leading to a final confrontation that will change everyone's lives forever
