The Carey Treatment (1972) is based on an early work by Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park), and directed by Blake Edwards (The Pink Panther). James Coburn is Dr. Carey who responds to a friend's cry for help. The boss's daughter dies from an amateur abortion. James Hong is accused because he performs abortions himself. It was the seventies, so it was illegal anyway. Coburn runs an investigation to find the real killer and set Hong free. It's kind of your basic detective thriller, and nothing really profound or spectacular. Edwards experienced studio interference, and was dissatisfied with the finished film, thus disowning it. It was critically panned at its release and has never had a proper DVD release. That being said, it's an entertaining film. The soundtrack is dated, but really catchy. Coburn is cool. The dialogue is very quotable. And Jennifer O'Neill looks absolutely beautiful in this movie, you just fall in love with her. Thrilling, funny, controversial, cool, and entertaining.
