Francesco and Marta are husband and wife running a small design company in Rome. When Francescos long forgotten Aunt Anita dies in Istanbul, he travels there to look after the sale of the hamam (one of a few traditional Turkish baths left) he inherited. There he meets the family running the hamam, gets attracted to a member of it and the whole Turkish atmosphere and decides not to sell the hamam..
Francesco è un architetto italiano che alla morte della zia Anita eredita un hamam (o hammam, un "bagno turco") ad Istanbul in Turchia. Lascia l'Italia con l'intenzione di vendere l'immobile il prima possibile e tornare subito al suo lavoro, uno studio di architettura che condivide con la moglie - con cui ha un rapporto conflittuale - e con un altro socio. A Istanbul viene accolto dalla famiglia di Osman, che assieme alla defunta zia gestiva l'hamam, ormai chiuso da molti anni. Tutti i componenti della famiglia erano molto affezionati ad Anita, e si dimostrano amorevoli con Francesco che ne rimane piacevolmente colpito; affascinato dalla stessa Istanbul e innamoratosi di Mehmet, uno dei figli di Osman, Francesco non ritorna in Italia ma decide invece di fermarsi a Istanbul per un certo periodo e rimettere a nuovo il locale. Col prolungarsi dell'assenza di Francesco da Milano, la moglie va a cercarlo e scopre la verità; il confronto tra i due viene improvvisamente interrotto da un tragico evento, che cambia per sempre la vita della donna.
