This TV movie got some lukewarm reviews, but I understand and enjoy it. I hope others do too. It is not available anywhere and seems to be forgotten. Like Dotty, the movie does make a certain sense. I'm one of the 12% on IMDB who gave the movie a "10".
Dotty is a hypersensitive with extra-sensory powers as was understood by the local Indians but not by any Anglos. It is not surprising that this character is vulnerable and nominally eccentric. My mother recently died in a facility as the ultimate result of a mental disorder, and some of her mannerisms were exactly like Dotty's.
Haven't seen Andy Griffith in ages and felt he fit this role perfectly. I've associated him with comedy but am pleased to see that he's versatile. The film is more sophisticated than it seems. Also, Hiram's twist at the end came as a pleasant surprise to me and tied all the preceding action together in a bundle.
The story was written by the well known actor, Barbara Bosson, so this is apparently her vision. Since it seems so far out of character with her extensive other work, I'd be extremely interested to find out how she happened to envision a work like this. In a way, it reminds me of the beautifully profound movie that Paul Newman and his wife Joanne Woodward created as an apparent labor of love: "The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man in the Moon Marigolds". This deep work is nothing like the lighter ones that made him so delightfully famous. So it really could be a similar situation to Barbara Bosson with her "Scattering Dad" vision. Whatever the case, I'm glad she had that vision same as with Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward. I also gave "Gamma Rays" a "10".
