The synopsis
At the heart of the story are Othello (CARLO ROTA), a noble moor and general, Desdemona (CHRISTINE HORNE), his loving wife, Cassio (GRAHAM ABBEY), his loyal lieutenant, and Iago (MATTHEW DESLIPPE), his ensign. Embittered by Othellos promotion of Cassio over him, and convinced that Othello has bedded his wife, Emilia, Iago is intent on exacting revenge. The terrible cost of Iagos scheming is revealed in the opening scene, in which we glimpse the
horrors to come. Our shock and confusion at the sight of the lifeless bodies of Desdemona and Emilia mirrors that of Othello, and were drawn into this tortuous nightmare as he replays the events leading up to this tragic point in his mind, beginning with his and Desdemonas secret marriage. Othello is a Moor, an outsider in Desdemonas Venice, and although he is accepted and respected as a soldier in the militia, the prejudice and mistrust of others is undeniable. Desdemona, though, sees his only is a pure heart.
