Farewell ceremony held for departing PA National Guard 252nd Engineer Company

RICHLAND TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- Local lawmakers spoke at a farewell ceremony for the Pennsylvania National Guard 252nd Engineer Company Saturday.
The soldiers leave Sunday for training at Fort Bliss in Texas before deploying for a mission in Afghanistan.
"Our plan we're gonna go to Texas... Fort Bliss... finish our training... deploy... do our job and return home to the families," said Capt. Josh Kupchella.
The 252nd Engineer Company was created in 2006, and this is the first time over 50 percent of the company will be deployed at one time.
"It's a big deal for me to be able to serve my country, and really be able to hang my hat on that at the end of the day after six years of service," said Ben Lieb.
The soldiers received their orders to go overseas over a year ago. Saturday marked their final day with their loved ones.
For many, this is their first tour overseas.
"You do kind of have a mindset going into things that it's going to be a challenge but it's also something people look forward to at the end of the day. To say they are proud of what they're doing and to be able to represent parts of Pennsylvania," said Lieb.
Several soldiers said knowing that some fellow soldiers have already served at least one tour overseas will help with the transition.
"This is my first deployment. I'm deploying with a lot of members here who have had prior deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq and we'll be using them as our mentors throughout our deployment," said Richard Doran.
The company leaves the 252nd Engineer Company armory Sunday for Fort Bliss in Texas. After a few months of training, the soldiers will be sent overseas.
"We've gone through a lot of training in this past year or so to get us ready. I think the mixture of guys that we have and the group... that we're ready to go... with our leadership we're very well prepared and ready to do what we were asked to do," said Lieb.
