I am posting this To help facilitate and establish the connection between Air Bases named after Villamor, Basa and Bautista.
Capt Jesus Villamor was the Commander of the 6th Pursuit Squadron. He is credited with a ZERO Kill. When his Squadron was destroyed, He fought with the ground troops in Corregidor. He escaped to Australia but volunteered to return to the Philippines as an allied spy working with Filipino resistance against the Jap occupation. A real life James Bond and a true War Hero. After the war, he was instrumental in the Creation of the PHILIPPINE AIR FORCE. VILLAMOR Air base was named after him because of his exemplary dedication to his duty.
Lt Cezar Basa was a member of the 6th Pursuit Squadron. He died trying to cover Villamor during a dogfight against the japanese. Despite being low on fuel, having just returned from an extended patrol, he waved off the command to return to base and land, took his obsolete P 26 fighter and engaged several high performance Japanese ZERO fighters swarming over Villamor and was killed in action. In Honor of his gallantry and valor, The Premier Fighter Base in the philippines was named after him. Fightertown, BASA Air Base.
LtCol Antonio Bautista was assigned to Basa Air Base. His first posting was with the 6th Tactical Fighter squadron, which was commissioned in honor of the 6th Pursuit Squadron. His skill as an officer and with handling a jet and as a Combat Trainer with the 105th Combat Crew Training Squadron eventually earned him the command of the 9th TFS, the legendary Limbas Squadron. His fateful final mission was to relieve the government troops being boxed-in by superior enemy forces. Like Basa, he ignored the imminent danger to him as he pressed the attack with his venerable but obsolete F 86 Jet. Even when his plane was mortally damaged he still pressed his attack until he ran out of ammo. On his return to base, his plane exploded and he was killed as he ejected and landed into enemy controlled territory. The frontline Air Defense base in Palawan, ANTONIO BAUTISTA Air Base, was named in his honor.
In a way, you can say that Bautista was a direct descendant of the legacy of Vilamor and Basa. But no one could doubt the courage, gallantry and dedication to duty by these three men, which is why three Air Bases are named in their honor.
