Winter Driving Safety: This information comes from the La Pine (OR) Rural Fire Protection District.
With the season’s first significant snowfall in mid-November, the  LaPine Fire District Fire-Medics responded to five serious motor vehicles accidents in just the first two days, due to winter roads! Here are 10 very important winter safety driving tips – starting from the easiest and least costly. Leon Pantenburg is a wilderness enthusiast, and doesn't claim to be a survival expert or expertise as a survivalist.
As a newspaperman and journalist for three decades, covering search and rescue, sheriff's departments, floods, forest fires and other natural disasters and outdoor emergencies, Leon learned many people died unnecessarily or escaped miraculously from outdoor emergency situations when simple, common sense might have changed the outcome. Leon now teaches common sense techniques to the average person in order to avert potential disasters. After graduating from Iowa State University, Leon completed a six-month, 2,552-mile solo Mississippi River canoe trip from the headwaters at Lake Itasca, Minn., to the Gulf of Mexico. His wilderness backpacking experience includes extended solos through Yellowstone’s backcountry; hiking the John Muir Trail in California, and numerous shorter trips along the Pacific Crest Trail. Some of Leon's canoe trips include sojourns through the Okefenokee Swamp and National Wildlife Refuge in Georgia, the Big Black River swamp in Mississippi and the Boundary Waters canoe area in northern Minnesota and numerous small river trips in the Midwest and Pacific Northwest. Since 1991, Leon has been an assistant scoutmaster with Boy Scout Troop 18 in Bend, and is a scoutmaster wilderness skills trainer for the Boy Scouts’ Fremont District. Leon earned a second degree black belt in Taekwondo, and competed in his last tournament (sparring and form) at age 49.

Homeowners in Northern Ireland topped the poll for being the best prepared to protect its houses, with 75% of respondents planning ahead for the inclement weather.
Those who live in Central England have been exposed as being the least prepared, with just 45% of respondents planning to even check their homes for vulnerabilities. The Scots faired slightly better, with 54%, just edging out the Welsh, half of who are planning ahead. If a property is set to be empty for some time over the Winter period, consider draining down water and heating systems completely in order to avoid freezing. Condensation can be a problem during the colder months as people tend to close windows and therefore reduce the amount of ventilation available within a property. Extra hats and gloves don’t take up much room but will be appreciated by everyone in the vehicle.

However, now is the time to start thinking about jobs such as lagging pipes, roof repairs and clearing guttering before the bad weather really sets in.
Proper insulation coupled with ventilation and heating are the best cures for condensation.
That danger  exists for everyone who is away from home when a winter storm hits…even motorists.
I like to have wool blankets for everyone in the vehicle  Sleeping bags will work but they can be bulky. This can store lots of the smaller items and will also serve well to melt snow over a fire for extra drinking water.
It has many uses, but can be a lifeline back to your vehicle if you have to venture outside in a blizzard. Crack a window open a little on the side of the car away from the wind while you are running the vehicle. It  just requires you gathering a bunch of items that you should already have together in a box.
