A new app, available on the Google Play Store, aims to help take some of the fear away from offering first aid when needed. We all hope we never need it, but few of us actually have the proper training to deal with a first aid situation. If you have an Android phone to hand though, you may now be of more use than you would think. A free app, the unimaginatively named First Aid app aims to give us n00bs a few pointers in the health department, should the need arise. Our favorite part of First Aid, and one that will possibly be the most useful should you have no first aid training, is where the app tells you about popular first aid myths.
Other options include an area where you can give the app some emergency phone numbers which can be dialled right from inside the app, and a tips area where the app shows how to perform basic steps when needed. It is important to remember that First Aid is never going to be a replacement for a proper first aid course with the professionals, but if you really have no idea and need a hand in a pinch, then First Aid for Android may be worth the time to download. Be sure to check out our Android Apps gallery to explore more apps for your Android device.

This weekend we (with Charlie in tow) did a first aid course over the Saturday and Sunday through Give Life Center, a first aid training and first aid supplies business in Lilydale, Victoria. John who presented the course was excellent as he had worked as an ambo for years, and then was a trainer for the Ambos in rescue and recovery.
All in all a great course and it makes us that little bit more comfortable that we have our first aid basics covered off in preparation for the trip. How a casualty is treated in the first few minutes after an accident can make all the difference and in extreme cases this can mean life or death.
What should be in your first aid kit?By Swagata YadavarWhat was the last time you glanced through your first aid box at home?
Many feel that a preparing a first aid kit requires time and thus either neglect it or buy expensive kits.
Select the box: Select a box or a bag that is light, drop resistant, water resistant and with good visibility of the contents.
Compartments: You can create the compartments that are needed with the help of the cardboard sections or just separate the components by putting them in different zip lock bags. Separate: You need to separate the wound supplies in one bag and the medications in others. Do not keep it in the bathroom where there is humidity; keep it in the living room or the bedroom.
Carrying of first aid kit is essential during travels to avoid health problems and in case of injuries away from home.
Carry more items while travelling like- medicines for motion sickness, dysentery, headaches, allergy medicines and items like flash light, swiss knife etc. Taking care of the common conditions like - Fever, cough, sore throat, gastro intestinal problems, pains and aches. Keeping a well equipped first aid kit ensures that you are able to deal with emergencies and common conditions. The First Aid pocket guide should contain aid that needs to be given for fractures, poisoning, cuts and burns, heat and cold wave and other threats that are prevalent in that area. You need to first arrange it, first the cover page should have a red cross, then it should have an index ( it is necessary) the cover page can be of light blue colour with a red crosses box picture. You can use the red red cross pictures that we have posted in the end of this article.

Prevent further harm also sometimes called preventing the condition worsening, this covers both external factors, such as moving a patient away from a cause of harm, and applying first aid techniques to prevent worsening of the condition, such as applying pressure to stop a bleed becoming dangerous.
Promote recovery – first aid also involves trying to start the recovery process from the illness or injury, and in some cases might involve completing a treatment, such as in the case of applying a plaster to a small wound.
First aid training often also incorporates the prevention of initial injury and responder safety, as well as the treatment phases. Altitude sickness, which can begin in susceptible people at altitudes as low as 5,000 feet, can cause potentially fatal swelling of the brain or lungs. Anaphylaxis, a life-threatening condition in which the airway can become constricted and the patient may go into shock.
Battlefield First aid – This protocol refers to treating shrapnel, gunshot wounds, burns, bone fractures, etc.
Bone fracture, a break in a bone initially treated by stabilizing the fracture with a splint. Burns, which can result in damage to tissues and loss of body fluids through the burn site. Choking, blockage of the airway which can quickly result in death due to lack of oxygen if the patient’s trachea is not cleared, for example by the Heimlich Maneuver. Cramps in muscles due to lactic acid build up caused either by inadequate oxygenation of muscle or lack of water or salt. Heat syncope, another stage in the same process as heat stroke, occurs under similar conditions as heat stroke and is not distinguished from the latter by some authorities. Heavy bleeding, treated by applying pressure (manually and later with a pressure bandage) to the wound site and elevating the limb if possible. Sprain, a temporary dislocation of a joint that immediately reduces automatically but may result in ligament damage.
Sucking chest wound, a life threatening hole in the chest which can cause the chest cavity to fill with air and prevent the lung from filling, treated by covering with an occlusive dressing to let air out but not in.
Toothache, which can result in severe pain and loss of the tooth but is rarely life threatening, unless over time the infection spreads into the bone of the jaw and starts osteomyelitis. While traveling keep the kit in the ruck-sack or a bag from where it is easy to retrieve and where it remains dry.
