Did you ever think about dipping your big toe into the waters of “prepping” but it just all sounded so “out there” that you weren’t quite sure it was something you wanted to be involved in?
Maybe you’ve been witnessing the mainstream media’s demonization that makes it sound like those in the preparedness community are angry militia members, hoarders, or fruitcakes who are preparing for the next Great Flood. You’d never know, running into any of us, that we are prepared to handle all sorts of crazy situations. When they aren’t pushing the kooky extremist stuff or warning of a dangerous survivalist-run-amok, the mainstream media likes to poke fun at preppers.
Civil unrest: You need look no further than Ferguson, Missouri to get a glimpse of the kind of havoc civil unrest can wreak on a community. An extended power outage: This happens in the wake of many different disasters – think Superstorm Sandy, Hurricane Katrina, Washington, DC’s Derecho, that horrible ice storm in the mid-south a few years back. Financial problems:  This is a different kind of disaster, but one many of us can relate to, given the current state of the economy. Preparedness means you’ve taken responsibility for your family no matter what situation arises. Speaking to the whole “preppers are crazy” stigma, don’t you think that taking responsibility for your own well-being is a sign of great sanity? Someone who can prepare for and accept reality is much more easily able to adapt to a fluid situation. When you look at the scenarios listed above, is it really at all rational to say, “This won’t happen so I don’t need to prepare”? Although we have the mainstream reputation of being immersed in gloom and doom all the time, there is nothing more optimistic than preparedness. If the songs that make you think of your significant other are sad, with reference to breaking up and getting back together, unsatisfied yearnings, arguments, frustration, anger, and broken hearts, you just might be doing the whole “love” thing wrong.
If you want to be able to peacefully meet challenges and provide for your family without panic, prepping is where it’s at. Maybe the recent news headlines have brought you here, or perhaps a friend who cares about you emailed you a link to this article. If you never buy a single canned good or bag of pasta for long term food storage, please store water. A full month’s supply of drinking water for a family of 4 is approximately $150, give or take a little, depending on the prices in your area. Once you have water stored, consider adding filtration devices, secondary water sources, and water harvesting to your preparedness endeavors.
Keep in mind when building your emergency food supply that you might not have electricity during some disasters.
A great starting point for someone who is just getting started on a preparedness journey is prepping specifically for a two-week power outage. The best way to win a fight is to avoid getting into that fight in the first place. Secure your home and lay low, but be prepared if trouble comes to visit.
Don’t answer the door.  Many home invasions start with an innocent-seeming knock at the door to gain access to your house.
Don’t rely on 911. If the disorder is widespread, don’t depend on a call to 911 to save you – you must be prepared to save yourself. Be armed and know how to use your weapon of choice.  When the door of your home is breached, you can be pretty sure the people coming in are not there to make friendly conversation over a nice cup of tea. Plan an escape route.  If the odds are against you, devise a way to get your family to safety.
A common cause of illness, and even death, during a down-grid situation is lack of sanitation. If you are on a septic system, with no risk of the toilet backing up into the house, simply store some water for flushing in the bathroom.
If this is not an option, another solution is to stock up on extremely heavy duty garbage bags (like the kind that contractors use at construction sites) and kitty litter.
If your power outage takes place in the winter and you live in a colder climate, heat is another necessity.
It’s important to have a basic first aid kit on hand at all times, but particularly in the event of an emergency. In light of the current panic over Ebola, pandemic preparedness may be the very reason you’re reading this article and considering taking the leap. Gerber’s CustomFit Dual Sheath is a modular sheath designed to accommodate a wide variety of product combinations, including folding knives, multitools, and flashlights. Gerber Gear’s Span Solid State Tools are a pair of all-in-one weapon maintenance tools designed to be lightweight and portable.
Available from Gerber Gear is the ultimate collection of Bear Grylls-licensed Gerber products.
This entire collection comes tucked away inside a Bear Grylls River Patrol 45 survival pack.
Gerber gear offers a selection of knives, flashlights, belts, and other survival tools for the outdoorsman.
The Downrange Tomahawk includes a MOLLE-compatible sheath and Kydex blade cover for safe carry and fast, unrestrained deployment.
You can see the Downrange Tomahawk we first mentioned during last summer’s Outdoor Retailer as well as other Gerber products at Warrior Expo in Virginia Beach 11-12 July. The 2013 SHOT Show will see the release of a collaborative effort between Carhartt and W.R.
It looks like the classic Victorinox Swiss Army Knife got an update with a design closely resembling Woodland-style camouflage.
The BK-3B Bottleneck is a collaborative effort between Mantis Knives and Hawk Designs of Idaho City, ID.
One of my most frequented internet destinations, Art of Manliness, has just put up an article and video on the always cool, but fairly impractical, art of knife throwing. A while ago I wrote about the CardSharp, a knife by Iain Sinclair that folds into a credit card shape, hence the name. Many people put a lot of time and dedication into making a kick-ass costume for the San Diego Comic Con, but is it possible that going that extra mile is actually going too far? Mantis Knives had some great-looking blades on display, but the one that really caught my eye was the WIKUS. By pushing a button on the handle, the WIKUS projects a red laser beam downward, showing exactly where you’ll make your cut. Bawidamann was in full force at BLADE show, displaying both awesome pin-up art and awesome blades.

The 30th annual BLADE Show will be held at the Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta, Georgia this year from June 10th to 12th. The WASP Injector Knife carries a cartridge in the handle, which when triggered will deliver a basketball sized freezing cold blast of gas at 800psi nearly instantly via the blade. Though it's a quasi-fictional vehicle, Al Navarro was spot-on with picking the EM-50 Urban Assault Vehicle from the great American film Stripes. It's hard to argue with the MaxiMog, which starts life as the uber-capable Mercedes Unimog and gets converted for full survival duty.
Well, I can’t tell you that extreme people don’t exist – they do, in every segment of the population. They prep not only for themselves, but for their daughters, sons-in-law, and grandchildren. I’m a single mom, with one daughter away at college on an academic scholarship and another daughter in high school. What would you do if the primary breadwinner in your family suffered a job loss or a serious illness that made them unable to work? If you’ve gotten this far and what I’ve said makes sense to you, here are a few tips to get your started. Just this year, three communities have suddenly had water crises that left shelves cleared. I recommend the refillable 5 gallon water jugs for thisAs well, fill empty containers with tap water that can be safely used for pets, for flushing, and for cleaning and hygiene purposes. In that case, you’ll want to have food that doesn’t require lengthy (or any) cooking times. Because of this, even if you stay safely at home, you could be called upon to defend your property or family. There’s no need for people walking past to be able to see what you have or to do reconnaissance on how many people are present. Sometimes criminals use an animal in distress to get a homeowner to open the door for them.
If the worst happens and your home is breached, you need to have a room into which family members can escape.
The good news is, if you’re prepared for other situations, you’re also prepared for many types of pandemics with only a few additions like protective clothing and specific sanitation supplies. Remember that sometimes power supplies are lost during a variety of situations, so keep the potential for a down-grid situation in mind when preparing. The CustomFit features a quick-access back panel which allows the user to adjust the size of the sheath for their tools. It features an electric (up to 1000v) insulated glass filled nylon handle, forged steel pry bar with black oxide coating and a paracord leash.
Combining a sledgehammer, battering ram, and pry bar into a single breaching tool, the Ding Dong features a forged and machined head with cross-hatching that effectively bites into doors and other surfaces, minimizing slip and maximizing impact.
We purchased a small variety of Gerber survival tools, and put them to the test with our own weekend warriors, our three Boy Scouts. I love the fishing line, fishing hook, snare wire, snap swivels, weights, and how the signaling mirror is located on the back of the cap. Both blades are constructed from SK5 1095 Cro-Van steel and come with nylon sheaths with a front stuff sack.
The pommel is checkered hard steel for non-slip hammering which makes it safer from slipping off a stuck object.
It features three 3″ curved black stainless steel blades that can fold into the knife body. Machined from stainless steel with a handle made from Spanish micarta, it’s pretty damn intimating, by virtue of its 4 sharp edges. This unique butterfly-style knife features a 2″ modified tanto edge blade machined from 400 series stainless steel. It attaches to any medium or large sized pistol with a rail, easily sliding on or off with a press of two buttons.
Proper technique and the three primary types of knives are all covered, so you can start learning how to effectively chuck that pocket folder at any hunks of wood or would-be assailants in your path.
I was too absorbed in the story (and Zombie killin’) to notice most of them, which is perfectly fine by me.
Then now’s a really good time, since LA Police Gear is currently having an overstock sale on the SOG Double Axe. A decent read, and a great reminder that humanity’s had no problem with killing each other before the invention of gunpowder. Surprisingly, it can be, since on the very first day someone was caught using an actual AR-15 as a costume accessory. The second day, however, saw the confiscation of two machetes, a dagger, a KA-BAR knife and a lead pipe. Hosted by BLADE magazine, BLADE Show is the largest combined show of handmade, factory, and antique knives, with over 700 tables and around 175 factory booths and products.
Made from 1055 carbon steel, the blade is a full 19″ of hand sharpened wickedness, perfect for both piercing and slashing. Neither the service provider nor the domain owner maintain any relationship with the advertisers.
It's as tough as the Unicat, but comes with a high-performance motorbike BOV, undersea vehicle and a special living trailer. But most of the time, you’d never realize someone was a prepper unless they came right out and told you.
Maybe this more positive coverage is why you’re here, reading this article. With all of the things going on in the world right now, you may be considering adding some preparedness supplies to your life. Earthquakes can cause structural damage, close down roads, cause power outages, and taint both municipal and well water supplies. They can use these supplies to control you by requiring certain actions from you before you are allowed to have your rations doled out.
Shouldn’t thoughts of that special someone make you more prone to goofy smiles and a warm glow than to melancholy longing or the urge to gleefully burn all of their belongings in a great pile in the front yard? This is a small investment to make for your family’s security and well-being in the event of an emergency. Look for just-add-water dehydrated foods, or better yet, foods that don’t need to be cooked at all. Find a list of foods that don’t require cooking HERE. Focus on nutrient-dense foods for good health and energy no matter what’s going on in the world around you.

Fortunately, it’s one of the easiest things to plan for, as well as one of the least expensive.
While there ARE some curmudgeonly folks out there, most are delighted to answer questions and help you on your way.
The CustomFit also incorporates Quiet Deploy Velcro technology, which allows for silent opening of the sheath by pulling down on the front tab. The fiberglass handle features two equally spaced molded rings to create mechanical stops for the operator’s hands, and the enlarged pry bar end is perfect for wedging into door frames. A stainless steel, rotatable pocket clip keeps the pen secure and ready, and integrated tool steel in the pen’s tip allows the pen to function as a glass breaker and personal defense tool. The handles comes standard green, although a replacement set in black comes with the knives. The blade has a slight inward sweep for better capturing whatever needs to be cut, and the flat tip is sharpened for use with digging and smaller cutting chores. The SK Jungle comes with a ballistic nylon sheath with built-in fire starter and a nylon mesh pocket. The blade folds into the handle with a liner lock design, which also allows the Blade Light folder to be used as a flashlight. The handle, also machined from 400 series stainless steel, has a latch lock with integrated handle springs.
The double-bladed head is constructed of 420 stainless steel and features a ballistic polymer handle with a hardcased black coating. Although the CardSharp 2 shares many similarities with its predecessor, it now also includes a stiffer, non-slip armor rubber coated body and unique safety lock.
Either they were dealing with some extremely dedicated cosplayers, or prevented the happenings of a Marvel vs. I also saw nothing about availability and pricing, but I’ll release that information as it surfaces. Also available is the first ever Tactical Gear Expo, which features manufactures, dealers and suppliers of tactical firearms, tactical knives, and tactical gear.
This Gladius features an extra wide full tang and the handle is made of high impact Polypropylene, with the classic guard and ball shaped pommel. In case of trademark issues please contact the domain owner directly (contact information can be found in whois). Even better, mehugtree points out that it includes a UAV that can send live images of zombie hordes from up to ten miles away. These are NOT outrageous Armageddon-style situations, but things that can happen to any of us. You can’t control the weather or the economy or the actions of an irresponsible industry, but you can be prepared to take care of your family. There should be communications devices in the room so that the person can call for help, as well as a reliable weapon to be used in the event that the safe room is breached. The Ding Dong comes with a MOLLE compatible fiberglass plate on which the tool mechanically snaps and is held by a quick-detach heavy rubber strap. What I dislike about it is the mini screwdriver is really hard to get out and the zipper pocket being on the inside instead of the outside. The Bottleneck also includes a functioning bottle opener when folded and a pocket clip for easy carry. After that, who knows how long before Gerber does their own line of specialized anti-Zombie blades. It’s the perfect tool for harvesting wood, breaching, extraction, and fighting off the crowds at your local renaissance faire*. Even with the enhancements, its still not effective for undead killing, but as a basic utility knife it’s pretty damn nifty. Each Pestilence Chopper also comes with a black nylon sheath and a back-up 5Cr13 stainless steel skeleton knife.
You’d be hard-pressed to find a cooler way to open your incoming snail mail then with one of these. It also comes with a cordura sheath and belt loop, in case you need your blade at your side, or you happen to be putting together a modern spin on the classic Legionary uniform. But they also go out to the movies, shop at department stores, and let their children go to sleepovers at other kids’ houses. Nearly everyone has experienced one or more of these scenarios, and in each of them, some basic preparedness supplies would have made their lives much easier. Another chemical spill dumped arsenic into the water in North Carolina.  After Superstorm Sandy, millions of gallons of raw sewage contaminated the water supply. If you have a stockpile of food, health and beauty supplies, and other basic needs on hand, your limited money can be directed towards keeping a roof over your head instead of meeting your basic day-to-day needs. The family members should be instructed not to come out of that room FOR ANY REASON until you give them the all clear or help has arrived.
After a quick inventory and re-organization, you may be pleasantly surprised at how many supplies you actually have on hand. Considering you can get a hold of a good military-grade Golok machete for a lower price, this knife is purely a novelty item in my book. Combine this with special guest appearances and events and you have the makings of the best BLADE show yet!
For fun, we like to read and hike, and this year at Christmas, we’re having a Mexican fiesta instead of a turkey. If they sent you to your room and took away your privileges, you didn’t have much recourse. In addition, each knife in the Carhartt Knives by Case Collection will feature Tru-Sharp™ surgical steel blades with a strong shoulder grind and a Scotch-Brite™ brushed finish, which is also found on each knife’s Lazy Duck-shaped bolster inspired by the traditional back pocket stitching style found on Carhartt clothing. Sometimes your area is battered for days, making it unsafe to do anything but ride it out at home.
If they replaced a lost or damaged item with one you didn’t actually want or like, well, you were totally at the mercy of their decision.
If they were busy and delayed resolving your problem until they had time, you had no option but to abide by their schedule, waiting until they decided (and if they decided) to help.
