Use your own discretion regarding what to pack based on your location, weather, and most likely event(s) that would cause you to need to bug out.
Note: This list is a constant work in progress as I find the best survival gear for each category. The LifeStraw Personal Water Filter is your quickest way to hydrate on the trail when bugging out.
The MSR MiniWorks EX Microfilter hand pump filtration system is the ultimate in serious filtration technology. Either for cooking food, purifying water, signaling for rescue, or for some warmth in the cold, having multiple ways to produce fire will greatly affect your short and long term survival. Combination fire starters such as this Magnesium Fire Starter combine a standard ferrocerium rod sparker with an instant light tinder source to provide an easy start to your fire. Standard ferrocerium rod starters like the Swedish FireSteel provide maximum sparking power in a lightweight form. Storm and waterproof matches like the UCO Stormproof Matches pictured here will provide 15 seconds of serious burn time in even the toughest of conditions.
Standard freeze dried backpacker meals from manufacturers such as Mountain House have been used by hikers and backpackers as ultra-light options. Emergency ration bars pack a full day of calories in one easy package with no cooking time at all. Camp fires are great for warmth, and while you can cook on them, at times it can be impractical to start a fire just for a quick meal.
Having a backup way of cooking meals and disinfecting water could be the difference between life and death. Standard propane fueled hiking stoves like the Jetboil Zip are great lightweight stoves designed to get heat directly on your pot quickly and in any weather conditions.
The Bushbox Outdoor Pocket Stove is a collapsible multi-fuel stove that can be used with solid fuel tabs, or any small combustible materials like twigs or coals. Standard solid-fuel tab stoves like this Esbit Large Ultralight Folding Pocket Stove are ultra lightweight stoves that use compressed easy to light solid fuel tablets that produce a great heat and burns without smoke or scent.
Having a fire or stove means little if you don’t have a container to boil water or cook your food. Bank Line is another great type of cordage that is very popular in the survivalist community. Nylon Cable Ties are often overlooked as proper cordage, mostly because if it’s limited length. Without a doubt the survival knife is one of the absolute must have survival tools in your bug out bag. A good multi-tool is also a great addition to your bug out bag as it contains a number of useful tools in a single package. A high power flashlight lets you work safely longer into the night when you’ve lost your sunlight.
When you need light AND your hands, having a decent head lamp allows you to have the light you need and the freedom to use both hands. Normally I always carry a couple of tea-light candles because they’re small and give you a decent burn time if you buy brands made for that extra time. I started this site to help spread the word about prepping and chronicle my own progress in working to keep my family safe from just about any situation.
Keep in mind that this emergency pack does NOT contain a method of starting a fire and it is suggested that you include a lighter, waterproof matches, and a fire starter. Overall, this pack is missing a number of key items, but if you’re looking to be minimally covered in case of an emergency then consider purchasing this off-the-shelf bug-out bag.  Granted, everyone’s BOB is going to be a little different, but keep in mind that our goal is to make sure that everyone is informed and prepared.
The kit includes basic essentials that should allow you to make it through a rough three days.
James lives in California, but grew up on the East Coast where he received a BS and an MBA with specialization in Financial Management. Note that some of the gear provided in this list would only be necessary in certain survival situations, and as such are not necessarily intended to go into every bug out bag. A more detailed list of how to choose the right backpack for you can be found here: Choosing the Bag. Lightweight and compact, this is the kind of bag that you can use as a simple day pack or get home bag and can be carried with you pretty much wherever you go.
A rugged design with MOLLE attachment system makes this bag extra modular allowing you to strap on plenty of accessory bags leaving your main pack area for the essentials. Drink directly from the stream without having to worry about finding a way to carry your water with you or stopping to purify.

When you need more than just drinking water, the MSR MiniWorks is the go-to filter system for your standard bugging out needs.
In addition to your standard cigarette lighter or matchbook, having the means to start a fire in multiple ways ensures that you have continued options for various weather conditions. Just scrape off some magnesium shavings and spark them with the attached ferro rod and the magnesium will burn hot while your tinder begins to catch fire.
Just strike the ferro rod with the attached steel striker or with the back of your favorite survival knife and thousands of hot sparks fly to your tinder bundle giving thousands of opportunities per strike to catch your fuel source. When used with a quick light fuel source, you can be almost guaranteed a fire in almost any circumstance.
They need to be hydrated with warm water, thus require slightly more cooking time, but can be a great meal in the bush. They’re not going to taste like bacon wrapped filet mignon, but they will keep you alive.
In some climates, burnable materials for a standard camp fire can be plain impossible to find.
Propane stoves burn clean and quiet and do not give off any smoke or odor that would give away your camp position.
This does require you to pack and carry fuel in your bag, but at a fraction of the weight of a propane system.
With 550 pounds of strength and the ability to cut it open to reveal smaller inner strands, paracord is the most versatile type of cordage available. This cordage is super light weight so that you can fit more length for the same weight in parachute cord. However, with high strength and locking mechanism, cable ties have multiple uses in a bug out bag. Whether you go for the full functionality (and weight) of a standard tent, or decide to save weight and use a more DIY approach, anything is better than huddling under a tree hoping branches above will keep you dry. The key here is to find the most waterproof tarp you can, or use spray-on waterproofing to keep as much rain out as possible. It gets you off the ground, usually comes with a rain-fly (though a tarp or poncho can work too) and is super light weight. You could almost survive any short term disaster with just this ONE item if you absolutely had to. Not only can they help you get a fire started if your kindling is wet, I found this micro lantern that runs on tea-light candles. Our goal is to help people survive, whether you're lost on a hiking trip, preparing for natural disasters, or a man-made event. The Red Camo ABS material handle features a finger groove design with a short guard, protecting the hands from slipping onto the extremely sharpened blade. Items like: waterproof matches, basic first aid kit, survival rope bracelet, food, water and emergency hammer that shatters glass and cuts seat belts.
Prior to joining GeekAlerts, he worked as a financial manager for a high-end estate planning firm.
Military Issue MOLLE II bag carries the maximum bug out load with nearly twice the space as typical 72 hour bug out bags.
You should have multiple ways to capture and purify the most essential list item in your bag. The downside though is you have to carry a flammable fuel source which takes up valuable room in your go bag.
While it doesn’t have the strength of paracord, the chances of needing the full 550# of paracord strength is fairly small. From basic car repair to tying broken straps on our bag, this versatile and ultra lightweight tool should be in your bag no questions asked! Downsides are you have to have two trees to tie on to, but this makes a comfortable shelter for short term bug outs. The old monster D battery combo flashlight and clubs have given way to ultralight near pen size lights with higher output for minimal weight.
It offers a Red Camouflage 440 stainless steel with an extremely sharpened blade, which have some awesome features added to it. You should have ways to continually hydrate, as well as purify water for hygiene uses and for various cooking needs. A Hydro Flask Insulated Stainless Steel water bottle is double walled, keeping cold water cold, BPA free, and just downright awesome. Bank line provides a high amount of strength in a smaller package that is easy to work with.

The blade sports an accurately Bowie design with teeth like serrations and a well sharpened gut hook on the top to give the knife a sleek, stylish and fierce look.
The handle is weather proof making this knife the Ultimate Survival knife needed in the wild. You can see the accuracy of the blade on the grinding line which separated the spine from the infamous blade.
So the next time you hunting, fishing or hiking, you will now have a reliable and trustworthy knife to call your savior. It is in no way a complete list, or a list of things that need to be included in everyone’s stockpile.
It is here to give you some ideas, and some things to think about when getting started.Reply john sprague March 31, 2012 at 7:58 am Great list!Reply seriously?!? I know better than to bring a third of the items listed but inside 2 freezer bags near the top of my pack will be my old KJV. I agree with you about him dissing people’s faith but saying that people that follow the bible are of greater worth is kinda arrogant Logan September 8, 2014 at 5:00 pm Did you ever consider that maybe, just maybe he is asking because he is that shocked to see a bible on that list!? I’ve packed the pocket edition of the SAS Survival Guide and a book on edible native plants instead as logic would dictate. There are a lot of other things on that list like the kit and laptop that r just down right not worth taking. As for slamming on a person that was making a simlpe point is the kind of thing that is braking down Amarica and not the intelegents of the people that live here. The whole thing of a bible is a load of shit and full of lies that men have made seam like it was to be true but that is just what i think yet again. Huston April 8, 2015 at 7:35 am I thought being of christian faith was to openly and willingly reach out to those that are lost, or not found god, not to judge them because they are not the same religion. You may say that you are a christian but are you really a true believer if you are hating on others and telling them that they just got burned by a christian? Everyone is entitled to their opinion no matter their race, religion, nor their intelligence level.
I understand it will help keep refuge when you are out in the wilderness alone, scared and afraid of dying. Honestly this whole thing has been blown out of proportion and it all goes back to one simple question of why should i bring a bible. It could be used for as an archive for people that are trying to recreate the earth if a major disaster happens.
You are a prime example why Religion is the number cause of wars and problems in our society.
All you need to do is sit right there with your bible in your lap thumping it… K M March 25, 2014 at 8:07 pm Reading scripture brings blessings!
This nation is made up of many cultures and some of which predate the creation of even of Christianity and older religions in ancient Mesopotamia. This country was most definitely founded on Judeo-Christian beliefs, whether or not you believe this is irrelevant because this is a basic fact known throughout the world by anyone with at least a second grade education, I can write this in any color of crayon you choose if it will help you to better understand.
It is clear to all by your misrepresentation of the truth that you are as well educated in history as your ridiculous statement presents you to be. Please try to have a clue before you open your banjo-picking cousin dating dope smoking sandal-wearing tree hugging liberal pie hole in the presence of truly educated people.
If your comments are stated out of plain stupidity then we all understand you can’t fix stupid, but after all liberalism is a mental disorder…. Hell or even just a good book regardless to distract you.Yes, you are correct that that a bible wont help you hunt or fight off animals but it can help you survive if you use it correctly. Just because people stick up for God doesn’t mean were perfect n dont think your comments are bullshit.
Whether you believe it or not, whether you have all the right things to say to justify your evilness. The portable stove for example; how would you actually pack that in a bag along with every other item listed and why would you need it?
