Do you have the survival skills to survive in a post-collapse world with no police, no laws, and no government? Connor Mollison is a former elite swimmer, having been ranked within the top 20 in the UK and training partner with current 2016 Olympic swimmers. The Navy SEALS are known for their combat swimming stroke, which they deem as one of the most efficient ways of swimming for long periods of time without wasting too much energy. But you need to know this: A 'Combat Swim' stroke isn't just an advanced tactic of the Navy SEALS for staying afloat or swimming long distances.
With 71% of the Earth's surface being covered in water, it is no wonder why swimming is viewed as an essential life skill. Many of you reading this are avid survivalists and consider yourself well prepared for all types of survival situations, like being stuck in the desert or what may happen in a terrorist attack. Does it make sense now why being a strong swimmer and able to handle oneself in the water is one of the key factors in being chosen for the Navy SEALs? A rip current can form when the sand beneath the ocean floor is pushed apart by incoming waves (only visible underneath the water), creating a "lane" pointing from the beach to the ocean, and now after the waves have crashed against the beach nearby water finds a backflow within that lane of sand, now flowing in the direction of the open ocean.
Of course, your first move should be avoiding rip currents, which is why you should learn how to identify one. It doesn't have to be stormy for there to be a rip current; it can be relatively calm around and they will happen close to shore.
If you aren't strong enough to do so, let the current pull you out to where it naturally calms just past the surf zone. Drownings and capsizing can also happen in tidal currents that occur in those harbor inlets, where the water flows between two sections of land. From the coast line, it's even possible for spectators to see a lane of water that is crossing the Puget Sound, carrying a Native group in a hand carved canoe. If you have a book of tidal charts, you can know what time of the day the water is flowing, and use the tides in your favor. Rivers are fantastic places for setting up camps, gathering water, washing in or to cool off.
Even though a river may look safe, there can be incredibly strong undercurrents and flash floods which will not only sweep strong swimmers away, but also move big logs and rocks.
Other times, you might actually be able to see the water under the surface moving or rippling, dragging along debris. If you simply aren't able to do this, lie on your back, keeping your face out the water and wait for you to be pulled to calmer water. We've talked a lot about how to swim in certain situations and making sure you are able to get out of danger.
First, as well as being able to help yourself, you are a much greater asset to a team if you are a strong swimmer because you will also be able to help others if they get into danger.
Another fantastic way to use swimming as a survival tool, rather than skill, is to use it to catch food. Being a strong swimmer will mean that you have the confidence and know-how to complete a successful hunting mission in water. Although you can't drink sea water, fish contain valuable liquid in their eyes, flesh and spine, which can be obtained by cutting them open and sucking it out. The single biggest way to become a stronger swimmer is to work on your technique, before worrying about any sort of distance traveled. Due to the fact humans are not naturally fantastic swimmers, it does take regular practice.
Working on your breathing will also help you if you get into danger because it will keep you calm under a stressful situation.
Specialized "adult swim vests" help aid beginner adult swimmers swim safely and develop correct technique.
With a major winter snow storm hitting a majority of the eastern United States we thought it would be a good time to discuss Preparing for Major Winter Storms.
Heavy snow can immobilize a region and paralyze a city, stranding commuters, closing airports, stopping the flow of supplies, and disrupting emergency and medical services.
The problem with Winter Weather Preparedness is a majority of the public tends to think about it 24 to 36 hours prior to an actual storm.
Below you will find what you need to have in your Home, Office and Vehicle to be prepared for a Major Winter Storm. Non-Perishable Food – Stock up on canned soups and vegetables, powdered food, and grains like rice and pasta.
Camping Stove or Grill – A gas-powered camping stove is a wise investment for any emergency situation. Be sure you use it with proper ventilation to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning, and have plenty of backup fuel. A great little cooking stove is the Swedish Trangia as fuel sources are abundant and rarely ever depleted at retail stores. Prescription Medications –  Like food, it is always wise to have enough to last you a few days. First Aid Kit – You never know what kind of injuries or emergencies will happen, so make sure you have sterile bandages, disinfectant, antibiotic ointment, and over-the-counter painkillers available. A Shovel –  Even if you live in an apartment you should own a shovel as you may need to dig yourself out before your ground crew gets in, and they are unlikely to dig out your car. Hurricane Lanterns – Not only do they provide light during a power outage but they also produce heat that can easily heat a room in an emergency.
If you have a car charger you can always rely on your vehicles battery to charge your phone. Warm Room – When faced with an extended power outage, living and sleeping in a single room will help conserve heat.
Anything else vital to your household – You should always have ample supplies of items like diapers, formula, pet food, and so on before the storm hits. While driving home may be treacherous at times there may be instances where you cannot even leave your office parking lot, let a lone get to your vehicle. It is ideal to have an Office Preparedness Kit that includes but not limited to these basics (Many of these are a blend between your Home and Vehicle Winter Storm Preparedness Kits). First Aid Kit – Your office should have a first aid kit but make sure it is well-rounded.
Blankets –  A majority of offices do not have secondary backup heating sources so blankets will be your lifeline if the power goes out.

Warm Room – Same with Home Emergency Plan make sure you have a room in your office, preferably a central location that does not get drafts, to hunker down in. Bottle of water and a few protein, snack bars –  In case someone in your office has been eating the food stores that are meant for an emergency stash a few bottles of water, protein bars and jello boxes in your desk.
In the unfortunate event that you are stranded in your car due to heavy snow fall or automobile problems it is wise to have a Vehicle Emergency Bag in your trunk.
Some auto parts stores and mass merchandisers like Walmart or Target sell these as a bundle in their own carrying case.
Snow shovel – Get a short-handled shovel, probably a coal-type shovel, to stow in the trunk in case you need to remove snow from around the wheels of your vehicle.
You can buy plastic ones, but you may want to opt for a metal one in case you also need to chip at some ice or compacted snow. Bottle of water and a few protein, snack bars –  You hear of people surviving on ketchup packets that have fallen between the seats, but some planning will yield a better menu under emergency conditions.
Syphon Pump –  If being out of gas is your problem, and you get offered help by a good samaritan, you want t be able to get a gallon or two of gas out of another gas tank to get you going quickly. Lightsticks – These cost almost nothing at a dollar store and can be used either as a iight source or to wear in case you are shoveling snow around your wheels at night. Flares – These should be in your trunk in all seasons for putting next to your car if you are pulled over in distress. Extra Winter Clothes – Always have an extra set of clothes in case your current one get wet or damp.
Make Sure Your Car is Full of Gas –  You may need to go out before everything is operational. What’s your biggest concern about surviving life after an EMP attack destroys our grid?
Cooking over a campfire is a great skill to practice now while it’s a leisurely way to spend the afternoon. The best Dutch ovens will have 3 feet at their base, and the lid will be flat, have a rim around the outer edge and a handle for lifting the lid off the pot. There are also different sizes of ovens available so think about how many people you will be cooking for and whether or not you want to bake bread or other goodies…this requires a larger size oven. Start by placing your Dutch oven on a bed of hot coals and give it a few minutes to heat up. We use our Dutch ovens on extended white water expoditions, some great How To cook books out there. These expressions of what we desire, how we choose to outwardly display ourselves, would often take the form of paintings, photography, sketches and inventions. In an age where snapping photos with a mobile phone is as ubiquitous as fast food, electricity, air and water, it’s not much of a leap to suggest that selfies have become the modern means of daily self-actualization. The bottomline is that selfies are a very natural outgrowth of significant technology advancements in the mobile phone and social media era. Navy SEALS, being able to swim is a necessary survival skill and it can also be used as a weapon of war.
They make sure that every SEAL can not only swim, but swim under intense situations like cold and fast moving water and even underwater for a long duration of time.
This stroke is swum on your side with a single-armed breaststroke action and a scissor kick. You're about to learn how swimming can safe your life in a variety of life-threatening situations.
As a child, you likely would have been dragged to swimming lessons without question and we'd turn up and learn what we have to learn. This statistic doesn't even include drownings related to boating accidents; that would bring the overall number closer to 4000 drownings per year.
This is largely due to the fact that it is colder, the water is moving (think waves and rip currents) and it is far easier to suddenly find yourself in rougher waters with strong currents. Anyone swimming adjacent to it or within it can find themselves suddenly in the "rip current" and now being pulled toward the ocean. Although rip currents can sometimes be easily spotted, often it is very hard to tell if it's just choppy water or potentially lethal. Rather than thinking about fighting the force and swimming in the opposite direction to the moving water, you should attempt to swim parallel to the shore until you are out of the current. Native American tribes who canoe paddle the Puget Sound (where the Pacific Ocean flows past the San Juan Islands and into a large natural bay with additional islands and near Seattle, Washington), take advantage of the rip tides "conveyor belt effect" by simply paddling into the current, and then letting the current (conveyor belt lane of water) pull them several miles in whatever direction the tide is moving at that particular time of the day and where they intend to travel to.
They also come with their dangers because they can be fast moving and potentially be home to deadly creatures in certain regions of the world such as alligators and venomous water snakes.
This is why you need to weigh up your options before you attempt to cross or swim in a river.
Usually, the water by an undercurrent appears calmer and there will be gaps in waves because of the movement underneath. This can also cause it to appear a slightly different color than other types of water in the river. If you are capable, you should always attempt to swim at a 45-degree angle towards the river bank. The other main benefit of being able to swim properly is being able to use it as a tool to complement your current situation, rather than depending upon it when needed.
SEALS and military swimmers also need to be confident at treading water for a long time, while holding a weight. The smoother and more streamlined your swimming technique is, the more efficient you will be, thus wasting less energy. If you are serious about improving your swimming, it is recommended to take up some lessons as a professional coach or teacher will know exactly how to help you out. It is possible to swim with a life vest on; when it's all said and done, packing a life vest may be the smartest way to get yourself across a body of water. While this may be the norm for our society it is best to plan well ahead of these events to limit stress, lack of resources and the panicked public.
Many states require at least one wall plugged phone, which receives power from the telephone connection, in all households.
If there is an extended power outage during a major winter storm set up a tent in the house.  You can sleep in sleeping bags or a mattress in the tent to share heat and warm a smaller area.
This includes but not limited to sterile bandages, disinfectant, antibiotic ointment, and over-the-counter painkillers available.

It is a great idea to have more than three on hand as there may be more than one employee stranded and more than one hand shoveling out cars is better than one! This way you wont be starving to death when you find Fat Phil ate all the survival food stores at the office! But we highly recommend building your kit to fit your needs based on your areas winter weather. Keep a good-sized, water-proof flashlight with fresh batteries in case your breakdown is at night. Smash the bag and the chemical reaction inside creates warmth to defrost fingers that may be trying to change a tire or fiddle with an engine. It is a rule of thumb in the Emergency Outdoors family to never have your car go below half a tank. Waiting until you are in a survival situation will probably take all the fun out of the experience.
You can also use it on top of a wood stove, although it won’t heat the food on top as evenly.
You might want to have several different sizes on hand to allow you to cook more than one food at a time. You can use charcoal, but I like practicing with what I’ll have on hand if the fertilizer hits the fan…and charcoal is unlikely to be a plentiful resource. I’m glad you’re still walking the walk ?? You are blessed to have all this knowledge from your upbringing! We desire to outwardly display how we feel, how we think and how we wish to present ourselves to the world; a selfie helps accomplish that.
Selfies are a core part of humanity and communication – and now, with innovation in apps and mobile phone cameras, selfies are a core part of what people enjoy doing daily with their most treasured digital tools; iPhones, Samsungs and Xiaomis!
The difference between today’s expressions of self and the past, is that, today, we can create social artifacts of the self faster and with more volume than ever before.
However, unless you have a vested interest in swimming as a sport, it's likely you have never really tried to harness swimming as a survival skill. This is because of flash floods, quick sand and sand storms (you can literally drown in a sand storm).
Even the strongest swimmers can be shocked at the sheer force of the ocean, or powerless to fight the downward flow of a fast moving river.
You will waste valuable energy trying to fight the strong moving water and will find it much harder to get yourself out of the situation.
In other words, because of the river flow, you won't be able to swim across it in a straight line (not unless it's moving slowly) and will end up moving in a diagonal line pointing toward the bank from your entrance point. This realistic style training will mean that they are well prepared for any kind of rescue mission they will have to do. So, working on that breathing and then perfecting the combat swim stroke used by Navy SEALS can help you be a strong, long distance swimmer, if the opportunity or need ever presents itself.
Though it may take more time than swimming without a life vest on, it can keep your head above the water even after you've exerted all your energy, helping ensure that you don't drown and live to see another day. If you are lost in the woods, you probably won’t be lugging a Dutch oven around, but it’s one of those items that really should go on the list of equipment needed for your bug out location. The flat lid with the rim will allow you to shovel coals on top of the Dutch oven for more even cooking. A sort of inner-self expression that sets the table for outward displays, plans, actions and behaviors.
In fact, selfies allow us to present a version of ourselves that may be filtered, may be cropped, may be placed in another country, or even posed with people whom we’ve never met. We have more possibilities, more capturable moments and more ways to present ourselves with the selfie, faster than Vincent van Gogh could ever have dreamt of. Self-actualization, just like selfies, is a mainstream human desire that manifests itself in the form of behavioral expressions. We think Maslow would be pleased to see trillions of selfies among billions of people expressing themselves through the lens of a mobile phone camera. If the ability to swim is in your toolbox, you can proactively go out to hunt for food in the sea, lakes, or rivers and you can use it as a means to get fitter and stronger. Those bigger waves pound against the shore, making it easier for sand "lanes" to be pushed apart creating the conditions for a rip current as described earlier.
If you are gradually exhaling while swimming, this will allow a more natural breath to occur. You can cook most foods in a Dutch oven, but acidic foods will take on a metallic flavor, so I don’t recommend using it for foods like tomato sauce, fruits, or food containing a fair amount of vinegar, unless you put these foods into a non-reactive pan inside the Dutch oven. I can put coals on top of my oven, but I find that it’s necessary to brush all of the coals off before lifting the lid to check on the food.
Buying a new Dutch oven these days will set you back a pretty penny, but it will last a lifetime, and then some. More specifically, self-actualization, as Maslow teaches us, takes an outward form that helps us express our desires. The selfie is the perfect atomic unit of self-expression in today’s highly connected, social, mobile world that seems to move faster than any period in history before us.
In urban areas, the cost of snow removal, damage repair, and lost business can have severe economic impacts.
When the pan is cool enough to handle, wipe the oil out well and store until you’re ready to start cooking. They are definitely worth the investment and you couldn’t ask for a more versatile cooking utensil for preparing your comfort foods today, or when the SHTF. There have been critics of the modern selfie movement that suggest selfie’ing is a narcissistic behavior, but said critics would be wrong to think that the trend, in its entirety, is made up of egotistical, selfie-obsessed maniacs. The fitness will come in time; getting the technique down on the other hand is more likely to be the life saver. Every time you wash your cast iron pans, you should rub a bit of oil into the pan to keep it in good condition.
Like any form of expression, whether ancient cave carvings or modern social media divas, there are always those that create extreme displays of the self.
This is not necessarily indicative on mainstream selfie behavior, nor should we categorically accept that selfie’ing is a narcissistic behavior.
Leave the pot alone for about 30 to 40 minutes, then check to see if the biscuits are done baking.
