Survival has been calling on the Peruvian government to protect land inhabited by uncontacted tribes since the 1970s.
Today, five reserves have been created for uncontacted tribes, and Peru has ratified laws that uphold the tribes’ right to be left alone. We’re campaigning to ensure the government upholds uncontacted tribes’ right to their land and prevents outsiders from invading it. They include the Cacataibo, Isconahua, Matsigenka, Mashco-Piro, Mastanahua, Murunahua (or Chitonahua), Nanti and Yora. All of these peoples face terrible threats – to their land, livelihoods and, ultimately, their lives. Uncontacted tribes are extremely vulnerable to any form of contact with outsiders because they do not have immunity to Western diseases. A Tragic First ContactJorge, a Murunahua man who lost his eye when he was shot by loggers during first contact, recalls the tragedy that followed. International law recognizes the Indians’ land as theirs, just as it recognizes their right to live on it as they want to.
That law is not being respected by the Peruvian government or the companies who are invading tribal land. Everything we know about these isolated Indians makes it clear they seek to maintain their isolation. On the very rare occasions when they are seen or encountered, they make it clear they want to be left alone. Sometimes they react aggressively, as a way of defending their territory, or leave signs in the forest warning outsiders away. Survival is urging the Peruvian government to protect these isolated Indians by not allowing any oil exploration, logging or other form of natural resource extraction on their land.
After a Survival campaign in the 1990s, in collaboration with local indigenous organisation FENAMAD, the oil company Mobil pulled out of an area inhabited by uncontacted tribes in south-east Peru.
The greatest threats to Peru’s uncontacted Indians are oil workers and illegal loggers.
Oil exploration is particularly dangerous to the Indians because it opens up previously remote areas to other outsiders, such as loggers and colonists. In the past, oil exploration has led to violent and disastrous contact with isolated Indians. Now a consortium of companies led by Argentine Pluspetrol is working on the Nahua’s land and plans to expand the massive gas project. Camisea lies inside a reserve for uncontacted and isolated tribes that includes the Nanti and Matsigenka Indians. Tragically, these are the same regions where the isolated Indians live, meaning that loggers invade their territory and contact is almost inevitable. Loggers have also been forcing members of an uncontacted tribe to flee from Peru across the border into Brazil.
A vast amount of evidence, including video footage, audio material, photographs, artifacts, testimonies and interviews, has been collected over the years. For example, on the 18th of September 2007 a plane chartered by the Frankfurt Zoological Society checking for the presence of illegal loggers flew over a remote part of Peru’s south-eastern rainforest. Almost all the isolated Indians are nomads, moving across the rainforest according to the seasons in small, extended family groups. In the rainy season, when water levels are high, the tribes, who generally do not use canoes, live away from the rivers deep in the rainforest.
During the dry season, however, when water levels are low and beaches form in the river bends they camp on the beaches and fish. The dry season is also the time of year river turtles appear on the beaches to lay their eggs, burying them in the sand.
The eggs are an important source of protein for the Indians, and they are experts at finding and digging them up.
The Indians’ appearance on the beaches means that they are most likely to be seen by loggers, other outsiders or neighbouring, contacted Indians at this time of year. Besides turtle eggs, the uncontacted Indians eat a variety of meat, fish, plantains, nuts, berries, roots and grubs.
Encounters with the UncontactedTwo Peruvian men share their account of seeing an uncontacted tribe.
We help tribal peoples defend their lives, protect their lands and determine their own futures.
Through her physical and emotional survival of losing her boyfriend, and almost her own life, in the Tsunami in Asia, Petra Nemcova found the strength to make a tragic situation into a positive and proactive organization. Happy Hearts Fund, which helped to rebuild the lives of children in the aftermath of the Tsunami. Venus Williams staged the ultimate comeback in 2005 with her fantastic Wimbledon victory even after facing illness, injuries and even personal devastation due to her sister’s murder in 2003. Diane von Furstenberg was a massive influence in fashion design in the mid 1970’s as her design for the wrap dress revolutionised women’s business attire.
Mukhtar Mai is a Pakistani woman who suffered a gang rape as a form of honour revenge on the demands of tribesmen that was richer and more powerful than Mukhtara’s clan, the Tatla. Mary Robinson has served as the president of Ireland from 1990 to ’97 and Commissioner for Human Rights for the United Nations from ’97 to 2002. As President of ABC, Anne Sweeney took a fourth place network to a first place rating within a year. As the first African American curator of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, Thelma Golden is known for her creative eye and ability to capture the imagination and evoke emotions through her powerful exhibitions and events. Love DVF’s bracelet really unusual mix but it really works just shows how unique and individual each bracelet looks!
Really nice pictures – I love silver charm bracelets and this pulls some gorgeous examples together.
Today, despite the views of some national figures in the US, it is widely accepted - in principle if not in practice - that no person should be returned to a country where there is a serious threat to their life or freedom.
In the United States, volunteer groups in cities and towns across the country are helping refugees find homes, get jobs, and build community. As a global organization working across the globe in countries torn apart by the worst human instincts of hate and fear, Oxfam understands the threat they present to even the most basic rights.
Leaders who know full well the arduous vetting process all refugees go through here in America, yet promote the detention and removal tens of thousands of refugee children and families who have arrived at our borders seeking protection, are destructive.

The rhetoric around refugees, specifically Muslims, including the possibility of a religious test to bar Muslims from entering this country, runs counter to all of America's fundamental values. The US is not the only place where the memory of the world wars and their aftermath has faded. In September, world leaders will come together in New York to agree on a better way to ensure that the world's refugees can be safe and live in dignity.
Parents are often astonished when their “tweener” grows a foot taller and becomes uncommunicative and sometimes explosive. The first thing parents need to understand is that this is a natural phase boys go through during their development to adulthood.  The mix of testosterone flowing through their system and a natural need to separate from their parents creates an interesting, yet volatile, mix.
The stereotypical teenage boy is seen as a rebellious, wild teen that is continually at odds with his parents.
Parents need to step back and understand that teenagers (boys and girls) need to develop and create their own life. Teenage boys need a good adult man to be a role model.  There are many studies on the detriment to boys due to the lack of a father in a boy’s life. Be okay with boys pushing and shoving.  Dads, let your son physically challenge you to wrestling, basketball, mountain biking, etc. Sitting in a chair is a challenge for many boys.  There is a story of a rabbi that taught his male student the Talmud by reciting the verses while taking him on a jog.
Despite the often lack of communication skills, teenage boys can send out a barrage of nasty words in a parent’s direction.
Keep in mind a hearty laugh can be an appropriate response to a teenager’s automatic response to a parent’s request. Parents and teenage boys will butt heads.  It is important to differentiate between critical issues and minor issues. Without this sure knowledge of what to expect, they can be insecure and will keep testing you to find where the real boundaries are located in their world. For some parents it might be difficult to accept the concept of privacy for their children because they feel that anything their kids do is their business. What this means is that your teenager’s room, texts, e-mails, and phone calls should be private. Naturally, for safety reasons, you should always know where teens are going, when they will be returning, what they are doing, and with whom.  Keep it general- you do not need to know every detail of their activity. By definition, the teenage years are only seven years long, between 13 and 19.  As a parent you survived an infant screaming through the night, the terrible twos, potty training, kindergarten and another seven or so years of typical childhood trials and tribulations.
As political, social and religious wars rage around the world and we hear of the bloodshed of children, the most innocent among us, most other topics seem petty to discuss. I wanted to let you know I'll be taking a short leave from writing articles for Kid Focused while I work on a clean, kid friendly, novel. As we sat around the campfire last weekend I pulled out an old Girl Scout goody for the 11 kids in our party. Over the counter "Swimmer's Ear" drops contain alcohol. The prescription is an antibiotic and does not contain alcohol. Illegal loggers and miners are invading the forest, and oil and gas concessions cut across more than 70% of Peru’s Amazon region. They live in the most remote, isolated regions of the Amazon rainforest, but their land is being rapidly destroyed by outsiders. Their eyes started to hurt, they started to cough, they got sick and died right there in the forest. The government is actively encouraging new companies to explore in areas inhabited by uncontacted tribes including the Mashco-Piro and Isconahua. In the following years over 50% of them died, mainly from colds, flu and other respiratory infections. In this short video Teodoro, a local man, describes his encounter with an uncontacted tribe. By chance they came across a group of twenty-one Indians, probably members of the Mashco-Piro tribe, in a temporary fishing camp on a river bank. After starring in a number of UK and US television films and small roles in films, she came to prominence with roles in Hollywood movies such as The Phantom, Mask of Zorra, and Entrapment in the late 1990s.
Petra has a gold bracelet filled with charms that she feels represent her passion and generous heart…. Sixteen years of her life were put towards exposing the world to some of the worst stories that human-kind has to offer by reporting on wars, abuses, and atrocities. She has been in the spotlight for her great talent but now she has to embrace a new roll as a breast cancer survivor. After a decade of financial hardship in the 1980s, she launched an updated version of her wrap dress in the 90’s and built another fashion empire.
By custom, rural women are expected to commit suicide after such an event but she spoke up, and using word of mouth, took her case to court where her rapists were arrested and charged. She is credited by many as having revitalised and liberalised a previously conservative political office. As a woman, she broke through the common executive stereotypes and is known for her “sane and ego-free management” style. Refugees' rights to freedom and survival are largely taken for granted today because our grandparents had the compassion to welcome the stranger in their midst and the foresight to enshrine that practice into international law. Contrary to the misinformation communicated on the national stage, the administration of the refugee resettlement program, through which some of the world's most vulnerable people are brought to safety, includes extremely thorough vetting. Americans have a long, proud history of providing safe harbor for refugees from around the world. With the negotiations for the first ever UN summit to address refugee and migrant issues ongoing now, it represents an opportunity for world leaders to step up and agree on how to share responsibility for refugees in practice.
Although teenage boys have their emotional ups and downs, they also have a sensible and sensitive side. Do you listen to your children when they are expressing their thoughts and opinions?  Do you allow them to have different thoughts and opinions from yours?  You need to consider their thoughts and opinions as you would with any other adult. Participation in a sport or other physical activity will let them expend testosterone and socialize.
Don’t just “let them win,” but instead match their ability.  Continuous defeat will be discouraging.
Communication between parents will help create a safe environment for the teenagers.  Parents can help each other keep track of their teenager’s activities, without making the kids feel like little children by personally directing their activities.

Let them know their negative response does not always need a serious and dramatic reply.  Sometime a good tickle and a smile will help quell bad feelings. Get their perspective before things move to the next level.  You may want them to wear different clothes.
Teens will be able to have a more elaborate argument when there is resistance.  Underneath the resistance is an understanding if the expectations are logical. Open up a dialogue and get their feedback on setting parameters on school grades, behavior, chores, etc.  When they help set the rules, they are more apt to follow them. However, to help your teenage boy become a young adult, it is critical to grant some privacy. He is a business consultant and personal coach with 20 years of experience helping people change and reach their success. A former professional athlete turned coach, now father of two, was in my town last week on one stop of a national lecture tourWhat our puppy has taught the kids about parentingWhen I was 6-years-old my parents told my three sisters and me we were adopting a baby boy. A former lifeguard, he kept his eyes on his victim as he headed straight for the couple swimming between their anchored sportfisher and the beach.
She, for one, has been in the recent news, spotted wearing her Pandora bracelet out and about in her hometown, along with many many other celebrities.
She has won eight Emmys and is one of the most notable and respected correspondents in the world. Melissa’s gold bracelet was requested to be designed with red to reflect her passion and energy. Venus Williams had her Pandora bracelet designed to showcase her favorite colour blue, which maybe reflects how she remains so cool on the tennis court, and the Chinese symbols for friendship, love, and happiness represent her large interest in Chinese culture and art….
Diane says her bracelet of silver and gold reflects her strength and personal flair…. She took settlement money provided to her by the government following the court case, and opened a centre for refuge and education, the Mukhtar Mai Women’s Welfare Organization. She filled her Pandora bracelet with colours and charms that reflect her professional and polished style, as well as her love for her homeland of Ireland…. Her Pandora bracelet is filled with teal and blue glass beads indicative of her calm and in control presence…. We're fearful for our family and friends in the wake of so much violence and the seemingly unending headlines of attacks, abuse, and conflict. Founded by people looking for religious freedom and through the years enriched by those seeking safety, the very fabric of this country was woven by refugees. Many are living in squalid refugee camps in Greece, Kenya, Pakistan, or elsewhere, awaiting the verdict on whether or not they will be able to start over, whether or not their basic human rights will be acknowledged or if they'll be turned away.
President Obama should take this opportunity push for an ambitious outcome for the UN Summit and use the Leaders' Summit on Refugees he is co-hosting the day after the Summit to announce a more ambitious effort to resettle and welcome refugees. A boy that was usually conforming to his parents’ desires will suddenly assert himself and express his opinions. Women need to realize that they are wasting their emotional energy trying to explain things in detail.
It’s not personal, it’s just hormones.  Come on moms, you know you can relate to that situation.
Be open to the fact that they have their own reasons to wear something different.  If your position is important, stand your ground after you hear them out. Minor issues are ones that will pose a temporary setback.  Be firm on the critical issues and flexible on the minor issues. Without reasonable expectations, your teenage boy might feel he is on his own or you do not care as a parent. If there are critical warning signs of trouble, then it is acceptable to invade your child’s privacy. For social sites like Facebook, require your son to put you on their friend list.  This allows parent to see in general what they are posting and saying to others.
If the trust gets broken, make sure he understands that he will be allowed fewer freedoms until he earns the trust back. When I got off the school bus the day of our much-anticipated special delivery my mom was there to greet us. Pandora made her bracelet red and silver to reflect “her passion for woman’s rights, the importance of education and the courage within us all…. Our current society is set up much differently from most of human history.  However, this programming still exists. Think of puppies or bear cubs for young male animals- play fighting is a major part of their development. Share family values with your teenage boy and talk about what you believe is right and wrong.
You might cringe what you hear teenage boys laugh about.  Give them a quick reminder on appropriateness and move on. Your teenage boy should not be treated as a child.  Instead, become his mentor to adulthood. Even though her bracelet has blue glass on it, Christiane is said to enjoy wearing both gold and silver.
This new world was supposed to usher in an era of peace but two wars and many years of uncertainty and conflict had left more questions than answers. Today, with more people displaced by violence and conflict since World War II, we are facing the same test. Today, we do not adequately address this programming need, which contributes to some of today’s societal issues.
In the middle of it all were people who no longer had a home, and were desperately in need of assistance. So many of us were moved by the photo of the young Syrian boy washed up on the beach in Turkey, and yet that sympathy has not translated into policies that preserve and observe the legal obligations that come with the Refugee Convention. How we speak of each other, the open hand with which we help refugees and all of those in desperate need of assistance, are the examples we give to our children and grandchildren of what it means to be human. To demonize, to tear down people who have already experienced horrors most of us cannot imagine is unconscionable.
