It’s not that I think Survivorman is a bad show, and I do watch it from time to time, but personally I am just not a fan of those “Made for TV” survival shows. Les Stroud is very upfront and says that he is basically playing “Monday Morning Quarterback” and it was very hard to sit in a comfortable chair writing his book and try to second guess the decisions that were made on the ground or criticize the thought process of the survivors.
There are many throughout the book, Les covers everything from curing meat to what you need to have packed for survival if you go for a day hike. Les Stroud’s comments that accompanied the survival stories were insightful and thought provoking on how to best prepare for survival situations as well as how to use items that you find around you for purposes that they were not necessarily made for (example: Seat cushions from the plane were used as snowshoes, car parts such as wiring and side mirrors could provide useful survival tools). In between the survival stories, Les inserts shorts stories about his experiences living in the wild or shooting the TV show “Survivorman”, I could have done without these stories and thankfully they were short and did not distract from the overall content of the book.

Les Stroud will train 16 global contestants in the art of survival on a tropical island in the Caribbean. Global casting for SOS Island is currently underway and closes on Monday 2 September, which means you have one week to apply. Yossi Ghinsberg – A young Israeli National who sets off on an adventure in the Amazon Jungle with three other adventurers and becomes separated from the others and hopelessly lost. The Robertson Family – A story of a young family sailing around the world only to have their boat smashed apart in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
Christopher McCandless – The now famous story of a young suburban kid from a well to do family with a degree from a prestigious university who trades it all in to live life on the edge without any of the creature comforts we all take for granted.
James and Jennifer Stolpa – The story of a young couple and their five month old son who brave a terrible snow storm and try to cross the Sierra Nevada Mountains by way of a forest service road. Now, the creator and producer and host of the hit television program Survivorman transfers his decades of knowledge and experience to the pages of Survive, a practical guide that gives everyday readers a no-nonsense look at the real world of survival. It teaches you how to keep yourself alive with a focus on keeping your body’s core temperature stable in any situation.
Well, Corne and Mark will be leading South African viewers through another tedious chapter of Survivor, the show that just won’t die. The eight strongest contestants will then be marooned on SOS Island and compete in challenges designed by the survival expert himself.

Stroud offers readers the essential skills and tactics necessary to endure in any corner of the globe, along with a wealth of insider information born of his own experiences in the outdoors and unavailable in any other book. Special Forces Captian for 25 years and a founder of a survival training company called Special Ops, Inc. In fact, unless your mortality was inextricably tied to a round-the-palms triathlon relay with Wilson, the ball from Castaway, I’m convinced the duo of South African sporting legends would prove rather useless.
Contestants will be armed with only the GALAXY S4 Zoom and GALAXY NX camera and will have to use the smartphones and cameras to streamline their daily experiences live to the world. Readers will learn: How to make a survival shelter and why a lean-to is largely a waste of time. And instead of winning a wooden statue called ‘Immunity’ you win the whole island! How to locate and trap small animals and why the notion of tracking and hunting large game is largely a pipe dream.
Whether seasoned in the outdoor arts or new to adventuring, all readers will learn something from Survive! Stroud's many colourful anecdotes and cut-to-the-chase philosophy not only make for an entertaining read, but also enhance anyone's ability to focus on the main goal when everything else has gone wrong - survival.
