Of course an app doesn’t replace all of the benefits you get from learning first aid on a proper course, but the basic knowledge you can get from it could make all the difference in a medical emergency. A free app designed at providing basic first-aid instructions to help injured cyclists has been launched.
St John Ambulance has released the First Aid for Cyclists app after the latest Department for Transport figures revealed that while there has been a three per cent drop in serious cycling-related injuries, there has been a two per cent rise in the number of casualties. The app aims to equip cyclists with the necessary first aid skills and knowledge so that if required a cyclist can follow the app’s instructions.

Ashley Sweetland, of the charity, believes the app “should be as essential as a puncture repair kit”. The information on the app comes from medically trained experts and members of the charity’s Cycle Response unit, which supports over 100 events each year across London. Featuring live-action, step-by-step photographs (shot on location for added realism) throughout, which really show the reader exactly what to do in any situation.
The way they’re so easy to use and access on the move makes them ideal tools to quickly find the right information and try and help out in emergencies.
John Ambulance’s First Aid app was created to give people the latest first aid device and protocols for dealing with emergency situations in the form of guides and voice instructions right from the palm of their hand.
There’s also a whole library of other first aid advice within the app to give you the confidence to help someone straight away, which is particularly important during winter months when ambulance waiting times may be longer.
