Our book, The One Year Urban Survival Plan, tells you exactly how to prepare for a major disaster in the city or suburbs. When the WW3 comes I will fight with President Putin and China ?? I hate usa and all the capitalist countries.. If you have a gas powered generator, make sure you have plenty of gas stored in safety cans to keep it running for at least 7 days. Go to the store and make sure you stock up on any of the fresh items you may need to top off.
Bring in any outdoor furniture that could fly around or you don’t want to be sitting under piles of snow. Make sure you have all family members home before the authorities put travel restrictions in place.
Plan a smaller area in your home that would be easy to close off to keep warmth concentrated in one area. Winter storms can be a nuisance but for a well-prepped home they can be a time of family bonding and relaxation.
What advice do you have to share with beginning preppers for things to do before a winter storm?
Could it have been to find your way to other buildings or cars on the property when it was like a farm? Don’t know, I know I have one bought it because of him never used it, have it,if ever needed, crazy things you remember. Top 10 Oils For PreppingIf you don't yet have a stash (or a hoard) of essential oils, now is the time to start stocking up.
I find that I worry less about the big "what if's" out there the more emergency planning my family does to deal with the unexpected. Even if we aren’t ever the victim of any cyber-attack that takes down the electrical grid, power outages do happen all of the time. The list below is broken into different chunks of information and follows a good, better, best type of format.
We will be using the same assumption that National Geographic is using for American Blackout and that is a 10 day power outage. What do we need to prepare for living without in a power blackout caused by a cyber-attack?
So, let’s take these one at a time and start at the top and work our way down the list of scenarios and all of the items you should have on hand before a power blackout.
USB External Battery Charger – Essentially a large battery that can recharge your smart phone up to 7 times on a single charge. Battery Recharger – It is important to get one that can charge multiple battery sizes if you have different battery uses.
Oil lamps – the right kind can provide plenty of light and last longer than batteries, or should according to use.
Rechargeable Batteries for all headlamps enough to charge a set and use a set at the same time. Wood Burning Stove – I know these aren’t practical in all situations, but generally speaking this is the best overall option in a grid down scenario, all things being equal. In the context of the power blackout, we discussed that you would not be disposed from your home, so this is really talking about protecting yourself from the extremes of heat or cold.

Bathtub full of water stored in container for hygiene or drinking – Water Bob This requires some action before water pressure is cut off. Security like some of these other topics is more complicated so a list like this is subject to a lot of scrutiny.
We covered a lot of ground on Sanitation in our post earlier this year, if you want to read more, there has been a lot of this topic covered already. If you are not quite prepared, here are 11 things to do before a winter storm to keep your family safe.
Its a  good idea to own a quality hand pump gas siphon in case you need to transfer gas to a different tank or put it in a generator.
Gas genenerator owners should turn on their generator and make sure that it is in good working order.
You hopefully have plenty of freezer meals as a backup and also a 3 month supply of meals if you needed to draw from your stockpile if you can’t make it to the store or they have run out of supplies. See how you can help them prepare or offer them a safe place at your house if it is needed. Commercial products that you can find at home stores is best for this but in a pinch layers of newspaper or rags are better than nothing. Make sure you have refilled all necessary prescriptions and that the elderly or disabled people you check on have as well! Make some cocoa, read a new book or play a new family game and enjoy knowing that all of the time you have spent prepping will help your family make it safely through most winter weather! With recent and predicted events like Hurricane Sandy, The Colorado Wildfires, Fiscal Cliffs, and rising food and gas costs just in 2012 there is no denying that things are changing in our world. I will share the survival tips and tricks I have learned while on this preparedness journey and hope that you join in with lots of comments. The premise of the show from the website is “the story of a national power failure in the United States caused by a cyber-attack — told in real time, over 10 days, by those who kept filming on cameras and phones.” I have high hopes for this show and genuinely hope to learn new things and gain fresh insights from the portrayal of these events.
Knowing what you need to have to weather an outage and having a plan for living through the power disruption is important. Good items are the absolute minimum you need for a given scenario which so happens in this case to be our power outage. We will assume that for the duration of this power outage, you are able to shelter in place and aren’t forced to leave your home. An attack either on systems that deliver power to our homes or from an EMP attack will come without warning. If you don’t know what you are doing, call an electrician to avoid costly and potentially fatal mistakes.
As with anything flammable, candles and oil lamps should be used carefully and not while anyone is sleeping. We do cover this subject in much greater detail in our Self Defense section of our website. The one thing I always suggest are the chemlights that are so available at the dollar store. The ideas expressed on this site are solely the opinions of the author(s) and do not necessarily represent the opinions of anyone else. Not even plausible and not to mention “India” fighting with Pakistan and china!!

Whether or not you believe "The End of the World As We Know It" is near there are plenty of everyday things to worry about: loss of a job, health emergency, local weather events to name a few. At the end of every post the blog randomly selects three more survival posts for you to check out. If nothing else, I hope the situations they present inspire and motivate others to be more prepared if we are ever faced with a situation like this. As with anything else preparedness related, you are better off planning and organizing what you need well in advance of any emergency. Better will keep you above the minimum requirements giving you additional flexibility and capabilities.
Where you live and what time of year this happens will influence some of your choices below but I’ll try to call that out where appropriate. The second is when you want to cook something and are faced with the reality that you might have to eat those leftovers cold. Fortunately, the Prepper Journal has articles on just about every one of these subjects so the information is here. They are safe and children can use them without any danger to them and they can be used to give light quickly and store and are long lasting. The author may or may not have a financial interest in any company or advertiser referenced. Best is our recommendation for what you would ideally have to make it through most conceivable scenarios provided outside influences don’t change your situation. I probably won’t go into some of the situations we as a country could be faced with in the aftermath of something like this, but in terms of basic survival we should have all the bases covered.
You won’t have any time to run to the store to buy the items on this checklist before the blackout. The one I use is about six inched long and have four to six peaces and some have a way to put them around the neck so it freed the hands up for other chores.
Any action taken as a result of information, analysis, or advertisement on this site is ultimately the responsibility of the reader.
No matter how your generator is powered, its a good idea to have much more fuel than you think you would need!
You will have to use what you have on hand, or can acquire almost immediately after the blackout has occurred before panic sets in.
For most items I have added links to Amazon or other shopping outlets so you can order and price these items for yourself. Once people learn the power isn’t coming back on anytime soon, there will be chaos and you don’t want to be anywhere near that. For the cost they provide light that gives advantage that is worth much more than the dollar.
I have also created a free downloadable power blackout checklist that you can print out, stick on your fridge and monitor your progress as you acquire these provisions or carry this with you to the store to make sure nothing is missed from your preps.
