Doomsday Preppers is an American reality television series that airs on the National Geographic Channel. So what is this book about?  It is not so much an “about” book but rather a “to-do” book for do-it-yourselfers and MacGyver types.  Does that sound like you?
Want to make some fire-starters using empty egg cartons?  How about an inexpensive rocket stove fashioned from patio pavers?  These two projects are in the book along with 48 others.  What I like is that most are accompanied by photographs so you can not only read about the project, but follow along visually.
This is your sixth Backdoor Survival Prepper Book Festival which speaks to your success as an author in the preparedness and survival niche.

Having a lot of gear is great, but knowledge and skills will be the most valuable things in the long run. Imagine for one moment that you wake up one morning and the world, as you know it is in chaos, but you are oblivious to that fact, for the time being. Hours go by and you begin to wonder, and then panic creeps under your veil of certainty that your local government and authorities have the situation under control. Hackers in the employ of a rogue nation have finally penetrated the country’s cyber security.
Neighbors are stopping by asking questions but most are speculating and they have heard rumors they tell you. Disaster can be a camping trip that goes wrong or a simple day hike that turns into days lost in the wilderness. If you end up lost in the woods, for example, or when you find the world, as you know it is gone you must have the means to sustain life. Easier said than done of course however, with some practice you can start a fire without matches in various ways. You should stay put however, because if the government does recover they will begin search and rescue and maybe you can pick up a few more survival supplies.

Having a good knife when exploring the great outdoors or when things go sideways in the world is as critical as having food and water. There is a vast array of available knives and we have to be sure we make the right choice, before settling on a certain survival knife model or a certain brand. When it comes to choosing a survival knife and to survivalism in general, the two is one and one is none rule should be considered. 7 Must Grow Veggie Plants For 2016 Over-Wintered chillis – progress report Heart Attack: Aspirin VS Magnesium Win This Mantis Tiller! Once you’ve begun to stockpile survival gear, it can be hard to determine what you’re missing from your list. I’ve taken the time to organize the gear into different categories for your convenience: to make browsing much easier. Also, please let us know in the comments if there are any pieces of survival gear we’ve missed and you think should be added to the list. The ability to make fire is exceptionally important in survival situations. Although you don’t need everything mentioned in the list below in order to make a fire, it might be handy to have a small variety of options as back ups, in case a lighter runs out of propane, for instance.
Whether you’re preparing for the zombie apocalypse or you’re an urban prepper preparing for an emergency, you’re going to need a way to collect and purify water. You’re much less likely to need the heat generation survival gear if you live in a desert state or a place that typically does not get cooler weather.
Planning out what to eat after an emergency situation arises is one of the first things survivalists and preppers typically do.
As mentioned before, you can technically build your own shelter if you have the proper survival gear tools at hand. If you’re planning on getting rescued, or if you’re at all interested in navigation, communication, or really any way of knowing what’s happening in the outside world after the shit hits the fan, you might be interested in adding a few of the survival gear items below to your stockpile. There’s a wide variety of survival clothing that would be helpful in emergency and survival situations. Some survivalists will, no doubt, want to stay as far away from these items as possible, as most of them will, over time, become useless in a state of complete apocalyptic devastation. In case you don’t have a car or vehicle, or don’t plan on using one in a survival or emergency situation, you can completely ignore this list. In survival and SHTF situations, you’ll want to make sure to defend yourself and your family against both other people and animals. Whether or not you plan on bugging out in an emergency SHTF or survival situation, you definitely want to have your important documents and some healthy finances on your side. The items on this list are of course not a must-have, but they’re great to have on you in case you need some help and aren’t quite sure what to do. About UsAt DIYSurvialLife we strive to provide the latest and most useful DIY information, tactics and skills necessary to survive any possible SHTF situation. The program profiles various survivalists, or "preppers", who are preparing to survive the various circumstances that may cause the end of civilization, including economic collapse, societal collapse, and electromagnetic pulse.
I believe that fostering skills like thinking outside the box and being creative are important ways to succeed when under pressure. I don’t know if this is something that is being done intentionally or not but the fact is, we seem to be headed for some sort of conflict within our own borders. In the years since, we’ve lost that feeling entirely and it has become much more of a everyone is out for themselves mentality.

Far too many people never learn how to handle finances and that’s actually a crucial part of preparedness. It isn’t a new edition or anything, rather something like a spinoff, I guess you could say. I don’t in any way, shape, or form endorse the use of a solar still for acquiring water in a survival situation. In any survival manual, it is almost expected that the solar still be mentioned, and its absence in this book would be noticeable.
I wanted to include it specifically so I could talk a bit about why you shouldn’t rely upon it. The amount of water you’ll gain through the use of the solar still is, quite literally, a drop in the bucket compared to the amount of energy you’ll expend by digging the hole and setting everything up. Those are sage words, which, after reading them, I had to write down on a large piece of paper and set next to my desk lest I forget. Finding an outlet, whether in the form of DIY projects or some other hobby, is something we all need to do.  That, along with setting small, achievable goals, will bring a sense of focus and satisfaction to our lives. This book teaches you how to improvise solutions for the scarcities, deficiencies, and dangers that will arise in a worst-case scenario.

The electrical grid has been shut down and in an abundance of caution, local governments have shut down numerous water treatment plants. Natural disasters are ongoing, hurricanes, tornadoes, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes can happen at any time.

It balances hardcore planning with simple ideas that can make all the difference — like having portable solar panels to charge cell phones and laptops for vital communication and family entertainment. Things like water, food, medicine, hygiene and security are all in their own section with extensive information about how to manage each situation. Jim discusses, at length, pandemics, famine, economic collapse and other freak occurrences, their impact on society, and how we handled those situations. Let me tell you, if I’ve got an abundance of one thing and none of something else I need, you can bet your bottom dollar I’ll be making some trades! Some of the sections are kind of short, and they only skim the surface of the topic, so you’re not being inundated with too much information at one time. He and his wife live as frugally as possible and try daily to live as God intends them to live. All sort of questions get asked and eventually, some people will settle on a certain type of knife. We should think about what survival knife style is good for us by looking at our daily lives.
Even more, most of them dona€™t even have an effective way to sharpen the knives they have.
A hunting knife has a large variety of styles, blades and handles more configurations that just about any other category.
Being able to work with what nature has to offer in order to survive is the basic definition of bushcraft and a good buschraft knife will help survive when being stranded in the wild. Most often, a folding knife will come in handy to have with you on a regular basis and it will make a huge difference if an emergency scenario occurs. However, there are strong opinions when it comes to choosing a survival knife and many agree that a good survival knife should be more than just a knife.
Many of the hunting knives and survival knives will work just great as a defensive knife and many companies recommend their knives as a€?also good for defensive tacticsa€?. Machetes are used for easily clearing vegetation, doing light chopping on sapling and cutting anything thata€™s in your way. As a result, we’ve taken the time to create as much of a comprehensive list of all the different types of survival gear as possible.
Check out the list and tell us if there’s anything you think you should add to your own personal list of survival gear! With the proper tools, you can typically make your own shelter in case you need to, or fix one that you already have. The survival gear below, therefore, will likely be stockpiled by all types of survivalists and preppers alike.
That being said, this type of gear can still be helpful in case of climate change or especially cold nights. That being said, it’s always nice to get an upper hand on shelter, as it will also help you stay warm and dry in case of an emergency or survival situation. Though the medicine you can stockpile will not be enough to fix every situation, having a basic first aid kit and some standard medicine will typically get you through a great deal of difficult situations. If a vehicle is in your emergency preparedness plan, however, you’ll want to make sure you’ll have these items at the very least. There are a variety of ways which you can do this, although of course some work better than others. Stock a Kindle e-book reader, tablet, or Chromebook full of useful survival books and resources and you’ll have a hell of a lot easier time if there’s something you haven’t let learned how to do or need to do for the very first time.
I’m very much looking forward to writing it, just gotta get the current one done first, LOL!
At the bottom of the hole, roughly in the center, place your bucket or other clean container.
The plants operate by computer and now the integrity of the water supply is in question across the nation. You can find patio gardens in an urban setting and find and use discarded items from others that have succumbed to panic and are racing away. Purify as large a quantity as possible because the source may run out or if you have to leave quickly, you will have safe water to carry. The container you use to dip the water out of the source will have contaminates around the drink line. If the water is cloudy you can add up to eight additional drops, never exceed 16 drops of bleach per gallon however.
Anyway, the show’s premise is that the power has been shut off and cannot be turned back on. Speculating an EMP, he says it could occur either by nuclear detonation, or a geomagnetic storm sent via the sun. Read the book, digest it well, read it again… and if you need to know more, you can always visit Jim over at Survival Weekly where he blogs about survival and preparedness, too!
In this article we will approach the survival knife debate from a different angle and we will look at the top seven styles of knives for survivalists.
After all, you dona€™t need a good knife just because youa€™re waiting for the world to end. I was one of the many until two years ago when I decided ita€™s time to replace my chopping tools with some real knives.
If you want to choose a hunting knife, you need to do a proper research because not every hunting knife can be used as a survival knife.

When going for a survival knife, make sure you pick one that is robust (preferably A? inch thick) because you never know when you might use it to cut, chop hack or pry. If you are trained to use close combat weapons, you can inflict serious damage with smaller blades.
Whether you are at home and you need to clear some bushes or bugging out, a machete will do the work. Ita€™s always indicated to have multiple bakcups for your tools and the same goes for your survival knife. Eliminating Plastic: Part 2 – Laundry Kombucha Addicts DIY Kombucha Revisited Discovering Entheodelic Storytelling Breaking News!
Some will undoubtedly want to stay away from purchasing battery or electricity dependant gear, for instance, while others will undoubtedly want to go the hyper-minimalist route, only buying what they think they will really need (and perhaps be able to carry in a single backpack). Don’t feel pressured into extending your list of survival gear by buying something you don’t really think you’ll use.
Good survival tools can also help you to gather wood for creating fire for heat and to cook with, which is why tools are the very first thing on our list.
Certainly look into attaining a firearm if this is legally permissible in your locality, and if you ever consider you may like to have it as a backup option. It may be more beneficial to stockpile urban survival gear that will actually be of use to you and those around you in a post-SHTF situation, but in case there’s something you forgot or ran out of, tradeable goods are definitely an asset.
I'm also a proponent of the CUWV (Civilian Urban Warfare Vehicle) an armored vehicle made from a forklift.
Go on vacation, just be practical and use some common sense to take reasonable precautions, that’s all. Next, stretch the plastic tarp across the top of the hole using the large rocks or logs to secure it in place. If there is a power outage during a storm, this will get me out of the dark office building and out to my car where my main kit is.
Your thinking is that the power company will have things up and running in a matter of hours.
You also realize, that literally tons of food, others are hoarding will be lost if an earthquake or tornado destroys their home and all that they have collected. Water is your most important commodity in a survival situation, so it must be protected from further contamination. Each member by having the same supplies can survive if they become separated from the family. I love that, because it truly immerses you into a situation that helps you to better understand what you’re reading.
Jim has some great information on finding water sources as well as filtering, purifying, and properly storing it. If the world will suffer from a long-term disaster a good kitchen knife will make your life easier because there will be a lot of meal preparation taking place. When getting a pocket knife, just about any quality pocket knife will not work as a survival knife and you dona€™t want to go cheap.
The blade of a survival knife is also an important characteristic and I would personally go with a drop point or clip point blade that can also be used as a hunting knife or penetrator tool.
The average person doesna€™t have the same skills and it is recommended to go with something that is comfortable and doesna€™t require extensive training.
Instead, scan this list for items that you might have forgotten or think would really compliment your needs as a survivalist.
If you are interested in firearms, make sure to learn about them and train with them prior to an emergency situation. Finally, place a small rock at the center of the tarp, which weighs it down above your container. Therefore, never mix the two to purify water; always purify the entire amount with either chlorine bleach or iodine. Takeout or microwave dinner will be a thing of the past and you will have to do all your cooking using the kitchen knives you have.
Some even use folding knives for skinning and those who went with a thin blade will know how to work their way around the bone. You will need the best tool you can possibly have, a robust knife that requires less maintenance.
A textured, no slip grip is also to be considered because you want your survival knife to be manageable in wet conditions.
Think of the basics and go with a tactical knife that has a long enough cutting edge to make substantial slashing cuts. In many countries, the machete is the perfect survival knife and it is used for just about all cutting and chopping needs. The survival knife styles discussed above should provide readers with a basic understanding of what styles are available. Others, fighting a timetable they have set in their own minds are gathering all they can to be ready.
Of course food storage is covered, but Jim also talks about the importance of diversification.
A good kitchen knife is an important addition to every household and it can become a reliable survival knife if you are forced to bug in.
A good hunting knife ita€™s the one that works best for you, the one that allows you to efficiently skin and dress game properly.
All these task require precision and your buschraft knife should be very sharp and have a comfortable handle (to allow extended periods of use). If you plan to include a pocket knife in your EDC, make sure you check the reviews of the model you chose and dona€™t be thrifty.
In addition, your survival knife should have a point profile that allows effective penetration. This is a tool that many survivalist consider a must have for their bug out bag and it can be a definite survival knife when nothing else is available. Not everything listed is a must and you should choose a survival knife based on your opinion and experience. If water is not in large supply, you’ll need foods that are easily eaten without having to add any water. Even if you take the show on the road, in a long-term survival scenario, a good kitchen knife will become a weapon of choice. Think about the following when buying a hunting knife: the blade should be easy to sharpen in the field and the handle should have good grip, otherwise it will sleep when wet with blood. Older models of bushcraft knives use high-carbon steel for the blade and a round birch grip while modern ones may have G-10 grip scales with S90V used for the blade.
He also talks a little about gardening, foraging, fishing, hunting and trapping, and how to preserve what food you find.
Whether youa€™re chopping and dicing vegetables, carving meat or slicing bread, a quality set of knives will be required. If you prefer to use a survival knife for hunting, make sure it fits your needs when being out in the field. The downside of all my selection criteria is that Ia€™m not able to carry it on me when going outside my home. A smaller knife can be more effective because it can be easily concealed and used in a surprise attack.
It does you no good to get a deer if you can’t preserve some of that meat to eat at a later time.
Many prefer to use a buschraft knife as a survival knife and to be honest is just a matter of liking. Not to mention that a survival knife should have a little extra on the side and having a fire starter or a sheet that is designed for sharpening the blade will come in handy. You will know what to expect in a real scenario and how to properly use it for the scope it was meant to serve.
