For those of you who never took Psyche 101 in college, or slept through the course, let me take a moment to introduce you to Abraham Maslow.
It seems obvious that a man cannot become a master architect or artist if he spends all of his time foraging for food and seeking shelter from the weather. Can a man or woman focus on taking their business to the next level if there is domestic discord in their home?
Sadly, few in today’s society understand the Hierarchy of Needs or how each level supports the others.
An even more sinister and dangerous situation occurs when adults in society look to someone else for their fundamental needs. What is worse, if there is ever an interruption in these social programs, the results are disastrous and the recipients, rather than step up and provide for themselves, devolve into a forging animal state. Examining the Hierarchy pyramid, we see that the higher needs are built upon the base needs. What the social architects ignore, whether by being naive or through deliberation and design, is the fact that each individual must build their own pyramid. Never having learned to build the foundation of the pyramid, the individual flounders without order or structure, meaning or purpose. When the individual rediscovers Maslow or understands the hierarchy of needs for the first time, they realize that they need a strong foundation to build their needs pyramid. Having taken the steps to store ample food and water as well as safety and security tools, the individual can focus their attention on financial security and solvency. A person who has a mastery of their career field can advance to newer and more focused achievements. Abraham Maslow’s parents immigrated to the United States from Russia and he was the first of seven children.
The great irony of our time is that our grandparents and great-grandparents survived hardship and went without only to raise a successive generation that has little understanding of genuine need or want. For the past three decades Paul Markel has had the privilege to study with some of the finest instructors the U.S.
The Pacific Northwest recently learned a very hard lesson about what a real downed power grid would look and feel like. Many preppers assume they are prepared, but in reality, a massive power grid failure is more than they could have ever comprehended.
This is just a glimpse of what small town life looked like in the days following the major storm. If you are in a home that doesn’t not have a woodstove or fireplace, you run the risk of not having heat should the power go out.
4-Cover the windows with blankets to help block the cold air from coming in through the glass. These ten ways of staying warm will do in a pinch, but if you have the option, invest in a woodstove.
It may seem like the majority of preppers live in some rural homes or way off the grid, but there are plenty of people who live in the heart of a major city or in the suburbs who are also interested in prepping. If you are new to prepping or simply like the idea of having a bag filled with emergency gear, but aren’t really wanting to get into the hows and whys, a prepared bug out bag is perfect for you.
Some of the more experienced people in the survival world will scoff at these ready-made bags. The bags have everything an average person needs to survive three days without immediate aid.
The expense of the bags is actually not that much more than if you were to buy the items individually. There has been a lot of attention in the media lately about the Pacific Northwest being hit by a major earthquake. There are a few things you can do to help prepare your home for an earthquake, just in case the big one hits. While you certainly cannot predict an earthquake, you can do these few simple things to help you, your home and your supplies ride one out with less damage than doing nothing at all. Don’t hide out in your house and avoid talking with anybody about what the world will look like should there be another world war or the power grid is taken out. With winter coming in quick, it is important you spend some time preparing for violent winter storms that may lead to power outages and freezing temps that can ruin a food storage.
If you already have a food storage in place, you will want to do what you can to protect it from the cold and from mice who are going to be wanting to get out of the cold. Do an inspection of the area and look for any cracks or quarter-sized holes or bigger that will allow mice entry to your food storage. After a long, hot and very dry summer for most of the country, it is time to prepare for a rough winter according to the Farmer’s Almanac. The following list includes some of the things you should start doing today to prepare for winter. While many preppers will say they can’t afford to spend $50 on a case of hand warmers, when you break down the price for each pack, you are going to spend nearly twice as much if you buy a pack here and there.
Electricity is taken for granted by just about everyone [except, maybe us preppers!]  But, have you ever stopped to think what would happen if there was a total blackout of the power grid in the UK? This scenario is probably one of the most possible UK meltdown disasters that could hit us here in the UK today.
With the National Power Grid disabled we would be up the proverbial river without a paddle, in fact I think we would be up the river without a boat as well..! Have learnt survival techniques and skills that will ensure you are self reliant and be able and confident you can both protect and look after yourself and your family. EMP’s and the threat they offer would be a world wide disaster, but these too are monitored very closely. Within days the whole country would be in full on panic mode with nothing left on the shelves at any stores. We can cope with a short term blackout in the UK, in fact in many parts of the country they still happen.!
Try it, just for a day or two, test yourself, see what it actually means to have no electricity for two days – just see how it makes you rethink your whole methods of living.
Then, once you have tried to live for just two days without power, assess what you needed and put those things in place. It’s not a mad idea to get some extra supplies in, maybe some extra batteries and simple survival provisions learn more about survival skills and learn how to be that bit more self sufficient.
The answer is to invest in either solar powered torches [at least that way they will be able to be charged during the daytime] or go for the wind up type. Well, yes there are some quite specific plans already laid out and passed by government to cover these sort of disaster scenarios. A total blackout would cause chaos and the breakdown of our society as we know it – do you want to be part of that.? Aside from food and first aid supplies, one of the most popular items for preppers to keep in their homes is a firearm. While you may want your weapon at the ready in case of an emergency, it will only take a few extra seconds to access a secured location. Keeping all your weapons in a gun safe is the best way to keep your family safe from accidental shootings but ita€™s not convenient when therea€™s an emergency. You want to keep your family safe from emergency situations, but you dona€™t want your child or someone elsea€™s child to end up with a serious injury from a firearm. The Mestel Safety SGE 150 gas mask is essential to your survival in any chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear environment.
As noted, Mestel Safety has 58 years of experience in molding rubber goods, providing only products of the highest quality. If you want the very best in personal protective equipment, then consider the Mestel Safety SGE 150 gas mask, which provides proven protection for any CBRN threat.
As it so happens, the more affluent preppers have taken survival to a whole new level in the form of prefabricated underground fallout shelters. We’re not talking cramped concrete or sand-bag bunkers here but roomy, self-contained, electrified, illuminated, and ventillated structures, buried underground complete with all the amenities and fixtures one would expect in living quarters even George Soros would find appealing. While the more skilled preppers may decide to design and build their own bunkers and sanctuaries, some of their less handy, cash-flush counterparts are deciding to invest small fortunes on ready built shelters to ensure their family’s safety in the event of a nuclear or biological attack or massive social unrest. A psychologist by trade, Maslow set out to understand what motivated humans to do what they do. In this hierarchy he explained that, regardless of who they were or where they lived, all humans had certain physiological and psychological needs and that these needs built upon each other to allow the person to reach their ultimate potential. When people get the “prepping bug” they either don’t know where to start or will stop at the base level. With food, water, warmth and shelter provided by some faceless government bureaucracy, many people never learn to secure these things for themselves. Some social engineers would offer that by having government social programs provide the foundational needs of the pyramid the recipient is free to focus on the upper levels of love and affection, achievement and mastery, independence and dominance in their career field or field of endeavor. Healthy family and romantic relationships are difficult to maintain if there is no stability in the food and shelter department. 8, 2013 photo shows Guardian Survival Gear’s Elite Survival Kit features food, water, shelter and hygiene items for one person for 24 hours.
When they are financially secure people can focus on excelling in their career fields and achieving higher and loftier goals. As we gaze out at the American landscape we see a society with seemingly no understanding of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs or the importance of building that pyramid. A devastating windstorm swept through western Washington and eastern Washington before hitting north Idaho. People were using campstoves to cook on, but it wasn’t long before they ran out of propane.
Many people were forced to take refuge in hotels 50 miles away because local motels had no vacancies.
Winter weather is notorious for knocking the power out for hour or even days depending on the damage the weather causes. While there are certainly different challenges the urban prepper must deal with, it isn’t impossible. Working with a small group of people provides you with safety as well as pooling of knowledge and resources. Abandoned houses and buildings will be in abundance and you won’t have to spend a night outdoors, dealing with the elements. Doctors and other medical professionals that are left in the city when SHTF will be easier to find than if you were out in the boonies.
There are plenty of options for you to choose from, ranging from small and basic to much more elaborate. You are getting the bag and the gear in one price, which could end up being cheaper for some. It isn’t just people who live in the northwest that could be affected by such a tragedy. You may not be near the epicenter, but a strong quake can be felt for hundreds of miles away. Some of the older ones or poorly installed ones are very loose and could come down with a small earthquake. Placing a 2×4 across the front of each shelf will help keep the cans and other items from falling forward during the shaking. It doesn’t make a lot of sense to advertise to anybody who will listen about what you have on hand in case of a major disaster. Being able to rely on others’ strengths and skills will help you be stronger and more successful. It depends a lot on what part of the country you are in, but the risk of having a colder and snowier winter are pretty high for many regions. Fill the spaces with caulking, foam insulation or use steel wool reinforced with chicken wire.
Ensure you have enough food and supplies to carry you through a harsh winter storm that could leave you holed up in your home for days.
If you live in an area where there is heavy snowfall, your first option may not be possible if there is several feet of snow on the ground. Of course, there is no real way to accurately predict what the future will hold, but many people place a lot of stock in the almanac.
With a disastrous winter supposedly headed our way and equally unstable economy, things could get very dicey over the next several months. You must be prepared to shelter in place should the weather become inclement and traveling to the store to grab necessities is not worth the risk. They don’t just look at the short term goal of surviving on their own for a couple of days while the government and emergency services mobilize to send help.
If you are, you would of already thought through this situation and made your plans, stocked up and be fully prepared to survive. Although it is universally accepted that an EMP will happen one day – but when is just a wild guess.
Bringing everything we took for granted to a complete standstill from the moment you woke up to the last thing at night. Fuel supplies would dry up almost instantly, communication systems would fail and unless you are battery or solar powered the nights would be very dark indeed. You will still be surprised and rethink and regroup your survival methods for a total blackout. But, forget the batteries and your back to square one – even if you had dozens of packets of batteries they would run out very quickly. These have come a very long way in the last few years and are a more sensible investment for when the sun goes down.. It is important, however, for all preppers to keep any and all firearms safely stored, no matter what other precautions theya€™ve taken.
The right to bear arms is extended to many citizens, but there are laws that govern licensing and restrictions for those with criminal records. Unfortunately, there are many instances where a child has found a gun and caused deadly harm to themselves or another.
Weapons should be within easy reach when you need them to secure your home or your familya€™s lives. A small vault that can be bolted to the floor, under a couch or hidden under a desk is the perfect solution for keeping your family safe. People everywhere are stocking up on firearms, ammunition, gas masks, food, water and any other supplies they can get their hands on. Produced by Mestel Safety, a company with 58 years of experience in molding rubber goods, the SGE 150 is a multi-purpose mask that has been held to the highest safety and performance specifications. And if Homer Simpsons taught me anything, it is that if something is hard, then it is probably not worth doing. The manufacturing plant, located in Genova, Italy, is not only a NATO classified supplier, but an ISO 9001-2000 certified company as well. Quick and proper fitting is easily achieved with the inclusion of zip-pulls on the harness.
If you are serious about your safety, then spend a few more dollars and leave the surplus masks for cranky old spendthrifts.
In this awesome article I found something here worth sharing with you from our friends at The US Herald. I am seriously considering having this ultimate man cave build in my suburban yard. Atlas Survival Shelters is one company that produces amazingly crafted corrugated pipe shelters at prices many preppers find they can afford. There are power generator and Swiss-made air filtration systems, a living room area furnished with leather chairs if you want, or a flat-screen TV; a full kitchen and dining area, laundry room, flushing toilet, and bedrooms with bunk beds for the kids or guests.
Instead, you can invest in a made-to-order underground lodge, cabin, bunker, or condo, or build your own from scratch. By Dale 1 Comment This week Lisa and I talk about getting out of the house and starting to work in the yard.
The definition of a prepper is "An individual or group that prepares or makes preparations in advance of, or prior to, any change in normal circumstances, without substantial resources from outside sources" Like the Government, police etc. Markel received is Bachelors Degree in Conflict Resolution in 1991 after studying at home and abroad. Divorce, financial troubles, and other domestic issues all distract from the mission or career. Others will go out and purchase a handgun and ammunition but they don’t even have two days worth of food in their cupboards at home. A person cannot reach self-fulfillment, seek personal growth and peak experiences if there is constant struggle at home.
Check out some of the things that happened in the days and weeks following the windstorm and how you can learn from the ill-prepared folks in the area. Some people had the requisite 3 days of water on hand, but once that was gone, they were in a bad place.
A couple of the smaller ones used calculators and sold what they could—it didn’t last long. Sure, there were towns 20 to 50 miles away that had some limited supplies, but for the folks that didn’t have enough gas in the car to get there, they were in trouble.
Without refrigeration, food in the refrigerators and freezers was spoiling faster than people could eat it. With the weather so unpredictable, it is a must that every person thinks long term when prepping food, water and other basic supplies. Ice and snow are heavy and can knock down trees onto powerlines or even the powerlines themselves.
Your neighbors’ homes are also an option if they have bugged out or have been killed. Looting pharmacies, hospitals and the medicine cabinets of abandoned homes is much easier due to your proximity. Eventually, you will need to get somewhere that will allow you to grow your own food and raise animals for food.

In some ways they are right, but for the beginning prepper or the person who doesn’t have access to certain tools or for the person who would rather rely on the experience of someone else, these bags are perfect. Even if you do buy a ready-made bag, you need to add items that are specific to your needs.
The entire west coast would be at an increased risk of a tsunami that could be as devastating as the one that hit Japan a few short years ago. It doesn’t hurt to do a little work around your house to make it a bit safer, just in case the big one does hit and it hits where you live. Your supplies are what will keep you alive and well if the world were to ever get crazier than it already is. This is the time you want to prepare for winter storms; not a day before one is expected to hit.
Don’t put off getting things like toilet paper, bottled water and batteries for your flashlights. This is where you have all of your creature comforts as well as a roof over your head and hopefully food and water storage. You certainly can’t expect to carry them and your bug out gear and actually get anywhere in a hurry. If you have to cross a bridge, there is a chance it could be destroyed or unsafe to pass by.
Somewhere that is out of sight, whether that is a second home, a relative’s home or a secluded area in the forest. As a prepper, it is a good idea to pay attention to predictions and prepare to deal with a rough winter. The time to plump up those food storages and prepare to live with minimal or no electricity is now. Keep food, water and basic supplies on hand so you never have to go without or risk your life.
Things like hand warmers, emergency blankets and water purification supplies are just some of the things you will need a lot of. Adding a little at a time to your emergency storage is okay, but if you find an opportunity to buy in bulk—go for it! Weapons should be kept in a secure location so they cannot be accessed by unauthorized people like strangers or children. In some places, ita€™s legal to openly carry a firearm without a specific licensing procedure as long as it doesna€™t cause a public disturbance.
Children dona€™t always listen, even if youa€™ve taught them about the consequences and dangers of firearms.
Dona€™t leave your weapons stashed in unsecured locations like the top of a closet on a shelf, hidden inside books or under a couch. Most large weapons should be kept in a gun safe, but for other secure, hidden guns, a microvault is the answer. After all, even if by some miracle we survive the year, your body will thank you for the exercise. The Mestel Safety SGE 150 gas mask includes a number of features designed to withstand the harshest threats, even robotic cheetahs equipped with chemical weapons.
This means that they strictly adhere to the commercial standards set forth by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and have dedicated themselves to quality control and customer satisfaction.
Additionally, the butyl rubber face piece provides a seal around the face of the user that is not only tight but comfortable as well. The starting price for a basic unit is $49,900, worthy of a small mortgage for some people. And if you have the wherewithal to build your own subterranean family survival abode, then price is no object. Unlike other survival blogs, we will take a logical and no nonsense approach to sharing prepper news. While Lisa has been hard at work planning her garden and getting everything ready to go, I am a little behind the 8 ball so to speak. Paul has been writing professionally for over twenty years as well as teaching Small Arms and Tactics to US Military, Law Enforcement and Citizens nationwide. The basic and most fundamental needs are at the base and more elusive psychological needs are at the top. Understanding this, those in the military or government will often lose their Top Secret security clearances based on domestic troubles. Removing challenges and obstacles from an individual does not increase self-actualization and self-respect, it handicaps and stifles it. He learned hard lessons about personal preparation and thrift and he learned the perils of indebtedness. The devastation left hundreds of thousands without power and because the damage was so extensive and so widespread, thousands of people went without power for a couple of weeks. As far as the size and what goes in the bag, that is always a subject for contention, especially among some of the more experienced folks in the prepping world.
Even if you don’t live on the west coast, the ripple effect a disaster would have could extend all the way around the world.
Imagine what life would be like without the ability to grab groceries when you needed or buy medical supplies when someone in the family is hurt. Getting different perspectives about various aspects of prepping will make you better and stronger. You will want to make sure it is still properly ventilated and will want to have a fan running to keep the air from becoming too moist and threatening your food products. These are going to be some of the first things that are wiped off store shelves when the threat of a winter storm is issued. A long, cold, snowy winter means you will likely be relying on your emergency preps from time to time. When you are thinking long term, you will need a lot of supplies, not a single box of matches or a single bottle of water purification tablets.
This is a safe small enough to conceal in various locations throughout the home, but is safe from unauthorized users since it has a coded lock. But if you ask me, people that take survival seriously should be doing a little more than just stocking up on weapons and Twinkies. Or, we can all continue to be lazy and prepare by purchasing high-end gas masks like the Mestel Safety SGE 150 gas mask.
If you have any interest in preparing for the apocalypse, you should probably give your fitness some heavy consideration. In fact, for a company to achieve such certification, they must undergo an intensive audit in which all aspects of the manufacturing process are scrutinized.
As you may have noticed, many surplus masks feature a set of twin goggles built into a rubber mask, which presents many disadvantages in regard to vision.
What’s more, these shelters truly are a home away from home, hidden deep underground and out of sight. I have never taken more than just a passing interest in gardening over the years but this year I decided to build a greenhouse and learn more about what it takes to grow my own food and hopefully have a successful garden in a few months. Animal shelters were quickly filled with pets who had ran off in the storm due to downed fences and those who felt they had been abandoned.
When you have more time and you gain more experience, build your own bag that is customized to you and your needs.
Are you ready for “the big one?” Quite frankly, there are fault lines ripping across the country in one way or another. You must guard your supplies, but on the other hand, you also need to think about what it would be like to pool resources with others. With those three people working together, your chances of survival are dramatically increased. You don’t want to grab your bug out bag and just run like the wind without having a plan.
Edmonton lawyer Rod Gregory, who works with illegal weapons possession cases, recommends that all firearm owners refer to their local gun laws to make sure theya€™re in compliance with all regulations.
But you should also prepare for hazardous environments, which means picking up a worthwhile gas mask. The SGE 150 utilizes a wide polycarbonate, full-face visor that provides a virtually unobstructed panoramic view and eliminates all of the problems generally associated with surplus masks. There really is no place that is completely immune from the possibility of an earthquake—even the midwest. Sit down with your family and do your best to come up with a bug out plan that works for everyone. This means no surplus gas masks, but a modern, fully-functional mask such as the Mestel Safety SGE 150 gas mask. The visor is treated for both ballistics and chemical aggression and includes a comfortable rubber skirt with a patented springing seal design. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency recently revealed a four-legged robot designed to mimic the movements of a cheetah and is able to reach speeds up to 18mph. Each SGE 150 gas mask is a brand new, factory-direct gas mask, putting it miles ahead of any surplus gas mask you may find. Even more, it is their hope that one day the cheetah will be able to zigzag in order to chase and evade targets on its way to becoming a high-speed killing machine. If you really want to prepare for the end, then get ready for the day that these mechanical monsters gain sentience and turn on their mammalian masters – because if you cannot move you cannot survive.
