Imagine a garden that takes up very little space, but grows five times more food per square inch than a traditional garden. In a future world where there is potentially no electricity or refrigeration, no super markets or seed stores, and no fertilizers or pesticides, it makes sense to look at people who have managed to live successfully for generations without these “conveniences.” Studies of native indigenous people around the world—people who have lived off the land for generations without electricity, refrigeration, commercial agriculture, pesticides, or insecticides—showed that these people lived primarily on perennials (plants that grow year after year without replanting) as opposed to annuals such as typical grocery store vegetables (crops that must be replanted each year). Simply put, perennials only have to be planted once and they will produce food for a lifetime, whereas garden vegetables have to be replanted year after year from seed.
Plants in nature often grow in concentric circles where the tallest plant (often a fruit or nut tree) provides shade underneath it for shade-seeking plants, and outside of that shade, a layer of shrubs like blueberries and blackberries can grow. And because these plants all grow together, and are in some cases intertwined, it does not look like a traditional garden, but instead looks “natural”—like overgrown underbrush, which camouflages the garden from marauders. Mint, comfrey, mountain mint, cucumbers, beans, peanuts, oats and clover, all growing together in this 2x2 ft. One of the biggest benefits of this type of garden for preppers is that it is almost no work to maintain, compared to gardening with annual vegetables.
Further, by planting primarily perennials- and a large variety of them- you will always have food for you and your family each year, no matter what the short term summer weather brings. This list is not a list of the best movies for preppers and survivalists, this is a list of movies and TV shows you can watch right now (as long as you have Netflix or Amazon Prime) that you might not have heard of.
In the podcast this week Lisa and I made separate lists of the 10 preparedness related movies that we found, but there were 2 conditions. We talked about most of these in the podcast, and I even added a few more that I thought about after we recorded the show.
Survivors (Series  Netflix) Survivors is a British science fiction television series produced by the BBC.

The Man in the High Castle (Series Amazon) (Nov 20th) What would it be like if we lost world war II and Japan and the Nazis had control over the united states? The 100 (Series Netflix) When nuclear Armageddon destroys civilization on Earth, the only survivors are those on the 12 international space stations in orbit at the time. The Walking Dead (Series Netflix) Just about everyone interested in preparedness has heard about The Walking Dead, but because it is such a great show we decided to add it to the list. Goodbye World (Netflix) When a mysterious terrorist attack causes chaos in the cities, a group of friends take refuge in their countryside cabin. World War Z (Amazon Prime) Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt) traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments, and threatening to destroy humanity itself. Do you know of any movies that preppers would like that are free or even cost a little bit to rent? Filed Under: Featured Posts, Survivalist Prepper Podcast, Why You Shoud Be Prepping, Worst Case Scenario About DaleSurvival and being prepared should not only be a passion, it should be a lifestyle. I don't believe that the end of the world will be the "end of the world" I believe it will be the end of the world as we know it now. Here is a short youtube video showing how a real bunker in the Rocky Mountains might be attacked by some raiders. Enter your email address to subscribe to Survivalist Prepper and receive notifications of new posts by email. This page has all the information you will ever need to know about the prepper Bug Out Bag. I think all preppers have come to the consinse that a Bug Out Bag is a 72 hour everything you need bag for yourself. Sadly I have seen this bag mostly in the Survivalist Niche and really makes me cringe more that the Cheapskate. This gear list I am putting together is what long distance hikers use that make their bag so light.
This bag weights in at only a pound and has everything you need in a back pack for long hikes. This is not the easiest way or maybe the best way build a shelter, but it worked well for me and my budget. I dug out (with my tractor) a twenty-foot wide swatch and twenty-foot back into the side of the mountain. Digging around the perimeter of my newly dug hole, where the “survival shelter” was to be built, I added a French drain. I rented a concrete saw, and then cut a door way into the structure, leaving the bottom of the door four inches above the shelter floor.
Before back filling, I added pink foam for a little insulation on the back and sides with Liquid Nails. Before back filling the roof, it will have insulation, plastic material plus roofing material that will help keep water off the roof and direct it one foot or better past the sides of the shelter. With the door in place and the 4 x 4 lumber on, and the roof backfilled, now comes the front of the structure. Utilizing the septic manufacturer again, he pours these two foot by two foot by four-foot wide concrete reinforcement blocks that weigh one ton each. Of course by now, I have all the necessary survival food, gear and tools in place and ready to move in. In my shelter in the basement I have a Coleman camping toilet what holds about 5 to 6 galls of human waste before it needs to be emptied.
This is the most ecological sound advice I have seen on handling human waste with the least amount of smell. It may be too late, but if you plan to plant ivy and stuff on top of the bunker, you should go to your local library or bookstore (or even on-line) and see if you can find a book to look at that discusses designing and building roofs for plants to grow on. It may be irrelevant considering the structure, but they have some pretty good discussions in them on how to line the roof to avoid run-off problems and that sort of thing. We lost 2 neighbors in the storm, killed because their homes were in the wrong place, at most certainly the wrong time.
The next days were difficult, we stayed with friends as they lived outside the affected zone. By the end of the month, we had to move out of our friends small apartment and ended up living in a different town. Coming from a construction background, I’d say you did really well putting this together. If you live in regions where hills are very common, an underground (or partial) home makes quite a bit of sense.

Malcolm Wells later in life specialized in underground architecture, a study of his books may provide some ideas you might like to implement. Besides, this is a storm shelter and not a defensible bunker with alternative ingress and egress. This is a storm shelter and the retaining walls should help with most door blocking debris problems. The design looks well thought out and using pre engineered precast concrete is no doubt the best solution all around.
I’ve known the Planks for more than 30 years and have spent many days out at that house. Burns are categorized according to severity and the severity determines the burn treatment options. 1st-degree burn – A first degree burn is the least serious of the type of burns you can receive and it is limited to only the outer layer of skin. 2nd-degree burn – When the burn goes past the first layer of skin to the second layer that is a second degree burn.
Now that we have some reference on the types of burns out there, what are your treatment options?
If a minor burn occurs, there are several steps you can take for immediate treatment of the burn.
Cover the burn with a sterile bandage or clean cloth and protect it from pressure and friction.
Over-the-counter pain medications may help reduce inflammation and swelling as well as help with the pain.
If a major burn occurs, there are several steps you can take to immediately treat and care for the burn.
If clothing cannot be removed from the victim make sure the victim is not in contact with smoldering materials.
If the victim is breathing, cover the burn area with a moist, cool sterile bandage or clean cloth. Until medical help arrives, continue to monitor victims’ pulse, rate of breathing and blood pressure if possible.
Hopefully you will never be faced with anything more serious than a minor first degree burn, but it is important to know what to do just in case. After watching Maineprepper’s YouTube video: “Survival, hunting and pellet rifles” and Country Girl Bunny Hunter’s air rifle review I had a good idea what I was looking for in an air rifle. Because of the natural life-cycle of perennials, they have the time to put down deeper and longer roots, which makes them able to get more nutrients, reach water deeper in the soil, and makes them less susceptible to seasonal variations in sunshine, rainfall, cold and heat than an annual plant. And in nature, plants grow together in three dimensions: some taller, some shorter, and they grow in a way where all plants get adequate sun, air, rain, and oftentimes share nutrients and benefit from natural pest control. And in a doomsday scenario, preppers are going to have enough work to do, without having to tend to a garden every day, while exposing themselves to potential enemies. By Dale 10 Comments When it comes to movies about preparedness and survival I just can’t get enough.
The first was that you had to be able to watch it instantly, and the second was that you didn’t have to pay extra to watch it. High-speed winds from tornadoes turn everyday debris in to objects of destruction, while storm surges from hurricanes have engulfed entire cities leaving millions of people without power and water.
Meet four former Marines who believe they have what it takes to survive almost any doomsday scenario.
There is only one episode at the time of writing this article, but I can’t wait to see where this show goes. Desperately looking for a solution, the ark’s leaders send 100 juvenile prisoners back to the planet to test its habitability. The Capitol won, District 13 was destroyed and, as punishment, an annual televised death match called The Hunger Games was created by the Capitol. A vampire epidemic has swept across what is left of the nation’s abandoned towns and cities. This is a South Korean disaster film about a flu outbreak, but if you don’t mind subtitles it’s worth watching. The video on YouTube is not the best quality available because of the wide angle, but it is free. Interesting enough, this movie was made before we even knew much about the NSA. You can watch this movie on YouTube here.
This is not your typical prepper movie, but how these people survived is. Watch it here on YouTube. The definition of a prepper is "An individual or group that prepares or makes preparations in advance of, or prior to, any change in normal circumstances, without substantial resources from outside sources" Like the Government, police etc.
The program follows a group of people who must survive in a simulated post-apocalyptic environment. The film follows the downward spiral of society during a widespread and lengthy power outage in Southern California. There are four or five seasons and its a much better story line and rounds up alot better. There are veriations that some want to carry extra to help others like their kids but for all intensive purposes.
I think its one of the best options or needs to be integrated more when considering building a BOB. But when I see kits put together on YouTube that have a duffle bag, several flashlights, and a can of beans man do I cringe. Now, the bags and tents and gear might not look like they will last you a long time but these bags and tents usually last the entire trip walking from Mexico to Canada( PCT ).
On April 27th alone, there were 208 tornadoes with four being EF5’s tearing across hundreds of miles of the countryside, killing hundreds of people and destroying hundreds of millions of dollars in property across six states. I left the bottom of the hole about eighteen inches above the valley ground level, that is in front of the hole.
A French drain is basically a shallow trench with 6” septic drainage pipe, with holes on the top that allows the water to flow down and out.
With a few pencil sketches of my shelter, he was able to add extra reinforcement steel where needed and vent holes for incoming and outgoing air. The dirt on top of the roof will be approximately four foot deep on the back side and two foot on the front side to keep the slope of the ridge the way it was. This will keep the echoes down inside plus keep from getting a knot on the head when I stand up! So we don’t get a tornado…we don’t have a mass extinction event…now I have a great root cellar and a fort for my 5-year-old to play in.
One, an older man, used to sit on his front porch all day in a rocking chair and wave to every car that passed.
They had electricity and water and the stores near their house were not only standing, but were open.
Since we are law school students, we were able to find summer work at a law firm down in Montgomery.
I don’t believe the outside lock poses a problem as it could bolt through and thus be designed to release from the inside if some villains placed a lock on the outside.
I envision an extension of the entrance with a turn, more dirt, add ventilation, foxholes, and plant edibles.
While we know most of our friends today will enjoy some outdoor activity followed by fireworks this evening, please take a moment and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our great nation.
When you can’t run to the Emergency Room or the neighborhood clinic, the responsibility for medical care may rest on your shoulders. A quick way to tell the difference between a first degree and second degree burn are the presence of blisters. In a severe burn, the skin has been removed and fat, muscle and even bone areas may be affected. Since it is more likely that you will have and be able to survive first or second degree burns, we will cover those first. Treat a burn as a major burn if the area is more than 2 to 3 inches in diameter or if it is located on the hands, feet, face, groin, buttocks or major joints. To prevent shock, lay the victim flat, elevate the feet 12 inches and cover the victim with a coat or blanket.
Putting ice directly on a burn can cause a person’s body to become too cold and cause further damage to the wound.

The ideas expressed on this site are solely the opinions of the author(s) and do not necessarily represent the opinions of anyone else. In nature, plants don’t grow in rows and don’t need to be cultivated, trimmed, weeded, or treated with pesticides. Herbs in this position have the added benefit of attracting insect pollinators as well as predatory wasps, which will feed on many of the “bad” bugs that would normally attack the fruit on the central tree and berry bushes. I’ll watch everything from Zombie movies, to documentaries to low budget disaster flix if I am in the right frame of mind. Well, I have been an avid over night hiker (usually lasting 3-5 days) out in the mountains in Colorado.
The difference between a 30 pound pack and a 50 pound pack will drasticly change the distance you are able to travel in a day. He placed a four-inch vent hole at the bottom left front corner for incoming air and one at the top right front corner for outgoing air.
The steel door hole cut, would be 1 inch bigger all the way around then the hole cut into the concrete structure.
Of course these 4 x 4 posts will be nailed, screwed and glued together as this holding wall is built. Back filling the space above the roof and behind the structure will take nearly 83 cubic yards of dirt. I choose the same wood, 4 inch by 4 inch PT posts that will stack upright and go six feet out from the structure. For the floor I like the industrial rubber floor mats, as the dirt falls below the mat through the holes. I still smell the gas, hear the people calling out from their homes and feel the strain in my back where I pulled a muscle helping lift that pole. We have tornadoes here in MI; one went by our house 30 years ago and I remember it like it was yesterday. It’s flat here with a high water table so underground shelters are not very practical, you could even be forced out by water or drown. We would also like to thank the brave men and women who continue to protect our freedom on a daily basis.
Seriously, from simple sun burns to touching that hot item on the stove, or reaching into the over too quickly most of us have been burned to varying degrees.
Knowing how to recognize and treat burns is a medical skill that everyone in your family should have. 1st and 2nd degree burns that do not cover an area of more than 3 inches (length of your finger) are considered a minor burn. If someone else has caught fire, douse them with water, wrap them in a thick, non-synthetic material such as wool or cotton or lay them on the ground flat and roll them. Do not put the victim in this position if he or she is uncomfortable or if you suspect a head, neck, back or leg injury.
The author may or may not have a financial interest in any company or advertiser referenced. These herbs, in a way, provide a defensive perimeter around the fruit, nuts, and berries that bad bugs must cross at their own peril. In my seemingly never-ending search to find movies or TV shows I’ve never seen before, it’s pretty hard to find prepper movies you can watch free and watch instantly.
On top of that, just like you, I have been consuming tons of books, forums, videos, list of gear for every BOB. These bags usually have 3 or 4 of everything and if were ever forced to do a 4 day hike would be littering the trails after the first day. To also help aid in water drainage, I cut a shovel wide trench above the structure area, so water coming from the ridge above is diverted away. The halves pieced together with a V groove and some thick rubber sticky material that acted as a seal all the way around. Once the door is in place I will place 4 inch by 4 inch PT posts stacked upright behind the door, on the roof, so the dirt has a place to stop. By the deadline of this article, I really don’t know if this structure will be complete, due to rain, snow and the cold, but I will entail the rest of my plans, like I just did. These wood retaining walls will be on each side of the door, attached to the door and will hold dirt that will be covering up the front of the structure.
When I drive home now, under much less shade than before since there are no trees in my once wooded neighborhood, I sometimes forget what happened and hold up my hand, waving to an empty lot with one tomato plant waving back. We were fine; our fields were filled with pieces of house, insulation and debris from others not so lucky.
You may have something up your sleeve for defense of your bunker and that’s not our business and as should stay that way. In their most minor form, burns seldom require much attention, the pain is brief and we go on with our lives. Any action taken as a result of information, analysis, or advertisement on this site is ultimately the responsibility of the reader.
Finally, around the herb layer is a lower level of ground cover, which often accumulates nitrogen (a natural fertilizer) that these plants take from the air, and make it available to the surrounding plants. Not that we are going to try it, but adding dirt to the roof does add weight so this was a bit reassuring. After these blocks snug up against my 4 by 4 wood retaining walls alongside the doors, I will back fill that area with dirt.
In a real grid-down scenario you could easily get scalded when you are trying to boil your water to make sure it is safe for consumption or any one of hundreds of different possibilities.
Because we are growing in three dimensions, we can produce five times more food in the same space that you would plant a traditional garden.
There are other bags out there but weight should always be an issue when putting together a bug out bag. I then added about 8 inches of rock over the drain and in the area where the shelter was to be placed. Before I cut the door way, I put two coats of Dam Tight and three coats of rubber roofing material on four sides and the roof top. This will give me a 2 foot thick concrete barrier with 4 feet of dirt in front of my structure. Those of us without a saw would latch on to a couple of people with a saw and we could clear a full grown tree out of the street in about 45 minutes. There could be accidents dealing with using fuel such as gas to power your emergency generator. But we had nothing but beer and champagne in the fridge and no food that didn’t require a microwave to eat. But this page is only based on the 3 types of bug out bags I have seen and how I would best fill these bags and Styles. When this is complete I will grow grass and ivy on the roof area to help keep the soil in place and blend and bushes in the front to hide it. We packed as much as we could carry including our dogs and cats and our shotguns, some water bottles we happened to have and toiletries and walked out of the neighborhood. My wife went ahead, cleaned the broken windows out of our truck, and by days end we had helped 2 people move their belongings out of their totally destroyed homes.
This will include clothing, sleeping bag, and protection from the elements for your Bug Out Bag. Over the course of the next week, we volunteered with different groups, took food from one place to another, cut and cleared more trees and cooked food. The sight of 2-3 thousand people similarly situated, walking like refugees while cops and firemen looked on helplessly was terrifying. Through it all, the volunteers were many and were supported heroically by the organized groups like Red Cross, churches, etc.
These are the extremes of each type of type and the best products I have seen, not to say that this is the only option if you think your one of these types.
