A month or two ago I met a cute little gal who was talking to me about her newly begun food storage. Many people are allergic to wheat and may not be aware of it until they are eating it meal after meal.
We get tired of eating the same foods over and over and many times prefer to not eat, then to sample that particular food again. These may sound frivolous, but through the years I’ve talked with many people who have lived entirely on their storage for extended periods of time.
As I put the material together it was fascinating to discover what the pioneers ate is the type of things we store.
We are sisters who grew up in a family of 8 kids, trying to navigate life with 9 kids of our own. Broken crayons, candle stubs, and any other form of paraffin wax can be used to make new candles, or along with other items to make fire starting tablets.
Dryer lint can be used as tinder, or when combined with paraffin wax or petroleum jelly, to make fire starting tablets. Cardboard egg cartons can be used to sprout seeds or as the container for fire starting tablets. Rope—longer pieces can be used for climbing and shorter pieces can be used for lashing gear. Plant waste (fruit and vegetable scraps, yard clippings, etc.) should be added to your compost pile to create natural fertilizer. Certain fruit and vegetables, such as pineapples, carrots, and sweet potatoes can be regrown from scraps.
Newspaper can be used as garden mulch or to prevent weeds from growing, to clean windows, and as tinder.
Cardboard boxes can be used to store the food you’ve canned, making it easy to grab and go if you have to leave in a hurry. Outgrown clothes can be used as barter items, to give to needy families, as rags, or combined with a stick and flammable liquid, to make torches. Hair clippings (human or pet) can be used as fertilizer in your garden and to keep deer and other animals away. Wire of all types and sizes can be used for lashing gear, transmitting power, and building expedient antennas. Twist-ties have almost unlimited uses, such as fixing eyeglasses, securing plants to stakes, and of course, sealing bags.

As soon as possible, you need to have your food supplies set aside for your long term survival.

Certain foods, if properly stored, will last for years and your goal is to have a long term food supply so that you can be self-sufficient. The Mylar bag helps keep out what would destroy your food source and makes it last even longer than it would last just in the container alone.
You know, she began, I’ve dreaded doing my storage for years, it seems so blah, but the way national events are going my husband and I decided we couldn’t put it off anymore. These flavorings and spices allow you to do many creative things with your grains and beans. Extended Staples – Few people get beyond storing the four basic items but its extremely important that you do so. Vitamins – Vitamins are important, especially if you have children, since children do not store body reserves of nutrients as adults do. Quick and Easy and Psychological Foods – Quick and easy foods help you through times when you are psychologically or physically unable to prepare your basic storage items. Nearly all of them say these were the most helpful items in their storage to normalize their situations and make it more bearable. Balance – Time and time again I’ve seen families buy all of their wheat, then buy all of another item and so on. Use Your Storage – In all the years I’ve worked with preparedness one of the biggest problems I’ve seen is people storing food and not knowing what to do with it. The lady I talked about at the first of the article left realizing what she had stored was a good beginning but not enough. And even though you may be starting to think along those lines of what you can and should keep for reusing, recycling, and repurposing, there may be some items you’re leaving out. Make sure dried corn is also in your food storage supply.  Buy sugar, honey, tea, coffee, peanut butter, nuts and seeds, salt and canned goods. Though these don’t keep as long as other survival foods, canned goods can often last many years at a time. What some people like to do is to put a Mylar bag into the container first and put the food down into the bag. To help absorb the oxygen, you can put silicone gel packs into the containers or you can use salt.
Make sure that you date stamp the outside of the container so that you’ll know the month and year that you put the food into storage. 95% of the people I’ve worked with have only stored the 4 basic items we mentioned earlier: wheat, milk, honey, and salt. Store less wheat than is generally suggested and put the difference into a variety of other grains, particular ones your family likes to eat. No cook foods such as freeze-dried are wonderful since they require little preparation, MRE’s (Meal Ready to Eat), such as many preparedness outlets carry, canned goods, etc. I have seen literally tons and tons of food thrown away because they were left in sacks, where they became highly susceptible to moisture, insects, and rodents.

As she said, Its better to find out the mistakes I’ve made now while there’s still time to make corrections. Its easy to take a basic storage and add the essentials to make it livable, but it needs to be done. By adding even just a few things it greatly increases your options, and the prospect of your family surviving on it.
This doesn’t taste the same as fresh milk, but this type of milk can last at least 20 years and you need milk – not only for cooking, but for children as well.
We just bought 20 bags of wheat, my husband found a place to get 60 pound cans of honey, and now all we have to do is get a couple of cases of powdered milk. One of the best suggestions I can give you is buy a good food storage cookbook, go through it, and see what your family would really eat.
If you are using plastic buckets make sure they are lined with a food grade plastic liner available from companies that carry packaging supplies. As I did the research for my cookbook, I wanted to include recipes that gave help to families no matter what they had stored. Foods that are put back in storage are susceptible to oxygen, light, moisture and temperature changes – especially heat. She had just made every major mistake in storing food (other than not storing anything at all).
You’ll need to buy dried fruit or freeze dried fruit that you can reconstitute by adding water. If you have a baby who’s on formula, you’ll want to set aside a supply of formula for the baby. But she’s not alone, through 14 years of helping people prepare, I found most peoples storage starts out looking just like hers. If something happens and you have to live on your present storage you’ll fare much better having a one month supply of a variety of items than a years supply of two to three items. If its put together the right way well be returning to good basic living with a few goodies thrown in. You’ll want to have wheat, oats, rye, cornmeal, brown or white rice and flour, wheat flour, barley. Because of limited space I wont list all the items that should be included in a well-balanced storage program.
