Recently, I have received emails from readers asking me tips for saving money on food, especially when buying organic items. Over the years, I have gradually shifted to buying organic products whenever possible because I believe it is an investment in my health and the environment. Of course, buying in bulk is not really a secret, but it never really sunk in until I opened the bakery.
Along my journey, I also discovered that I could start buying a lot of our household food items in bulk and cut down our grocery bill substantially. One of the first things I noticed about many wholesalers is that many of them require you to have a business in the industry to be able to purchase from them. The beauty of the buying club is that regular consumers can form small groups and buy in bulk without having to own a business in the industry! I can’t tell you how many hours I spent doing price comparisons and tedious calculations to find the best bang for my buck.
On average, the minimum order for my wholesalers is between $300-500 if you want to quality for FREE DELIVERY.
Ordering less frequently does have a downside though- I need to always be on top of my stock and know what I have available and what I am running out of.
I buy just about everything now in bulk (except for produce, but we’ll be switching to the CSA in the late Spring) and storage can become an issue with so many items. I stack the food bins by category such as grains (oats, couscous, quinoa, barley, amaranth, etc), protein (lentils, chickpeas, beans), dried fruit (dates, apricots, cranberries), nut butters, etc. I prefer not to store them on the counter, so I clear a space in the cabinet to store the jars. If you can’t order from a wholesaler, try purchasing food from bulk bins in your grocery store or from bulk food stores like Bulk Barn. As I typed up this post, I enjoyed a delicious breakfast…made in my kitchen for just pennies a bowl.
Directions: Mix the dry ingredients together in a bowl and then whisk in the wet ingredients.
In the past I was part of a CSA, but since I’ve moved, the farm is a good hour drive from me, on the other side of the city. Eating fresh, in-season conventional and organic food is the ideal for optimum physical health and the health of our environment.

It was my bakery that taught me the beauty of buying in bulk because I was purchasing all of these expensive organic ingredients (Glo Bakery is 100% organic) and I had to find a way to still make a profit at the end of the day. For example, I wasn’t interested in wholesalers for typical bakery goods like corn syrup or fondant.


This wasn’t a problem for me, but it will be a problem if you are simply a ‘regular’ consumer.
Each member creates an order based on the ONFC Buying Club catalogue, and the club places a collective order to ONFC. This has also encouraged me to cut down the amount of canned items I buy because the price difference is also huge when comparing canned goods vs. This is why I prefer to order less frequently and in larger quantities, because free delivery is priceless when we are talking about 25-50 pound bags.
Right now, we are cramming our bins in our laundry room, which isn’t ideal but it works for us now because it is close to the kitchen. I also used a permanent marker on the inside of the lid to write what the product is in case there is a chance I may forget. Wholesalers will throw a bunch of items into boxes whenever possible so it is easier for the driver to carry. It is a great way to save money on local, organic produce and it also cuts down on grocery trips too. Both of these methods are often much cheaper and you can also purchase in the quantity that you desire. WF has some GREAT organic sales sometimes (organic kale 2 bunches for $3 is the last one I got!). Most people know that buying in bulk from a grocery store can be cheaper but I just always assumed that true wholesale was off limits to me because I don’t own a business. I love Farmer’s Markets, but surprisingly they can be pretty expensive too, so you have to be careful in general I guess.
We receive deliveries seasonally from these farms creating a hub for the distribution for fresh and organic fruit and vegetables supporting to keep family run business and small producers thriving.
If three items are wrapped together in clear plastic and you can see each item has its own barcode than you are able to use three manufacturer’s coupon plus a BJ’s coupon if it is available The great thing about this is that you score up to 4 times the savings, and still get a great deal. So be sure to scope those out before you head all the way in to see if you can score a great deal on something.
BJ’s offers free air at all BJ’s gas stations. This is great because most of the time our regular gas stations prices are quite rediculous but I always know I can head over to BJ’s to save!
Mix the coconut oil, salt and herbs together in a small bowl then rub the chicken all over and inside with the mix. We deliver the order to a club member’s home where it is divided into the individual orders. The only downside is that many of the wholesalers I have come across are still ‘old school’ in the sense that they do not have computerized ordering systems online. The time it takes me to drive to my wholesaler (over 1 hour at least) and then load all of the items into my small car is just not worth it.
Instead of having a bunch of useless boxes lying around, I now empty out the box immediately and give them back to the driver so they can be re-used in another delivery.
Whole Foods lets you use a store coupon AND a manufacturer’s coupon, plus their sale price! Organic produce DOES go on sale, even at WF, and sometimes they have awesome prices (2 bunches of organic kale for $3!).
This makes for slow ordering procedures and I look forward to the day when wholesalers like ONFC make online ordering possible.

We just prepared a 40×25 area for our vegetable garden in NE Pennsylvania and we are planning to build our vegetable garden. Do you see a great disadvantage of building 12″ beds using 3 stacked 4x4s instead of the 18″ beds using 3 stacked 6x6s? If we use the 4x4s do I have to drill roles to place the rebar and metal spikes to prevent it from breaking the 4×4’s?
But I would reinforce them by drilling down with rebar and into the stacks to lock the joints in place with long screws. But I do think it’s important to use the rebar in the first course and galvanized spikes in the 2nd and 3rd layer to keep the wood from bowing under pressure from the water and soil within the beds.

We have a couple of raised beds in our yard that have well established weeds with lots of thick deep roots . Is there an easy way to get rid of these established weeds and still have a successful garden or is it better to start over?The other problem we have is raccoons and possums. Not easy but 100% effective.For critter control, the only effective way is a physical barrier, such as a fence.
You’ll also need to dig the bottom down into the ground to prevent the opossums and other burrowing critters from digging under your fence. It is a fact that containers dry out much quicker since the entire soil surface is exposed to the elements by thin plastic, or moisture wicking terra cotta in many cases. However, raised beds typically don’t dry out as quickly as containers due to the volume of soil around the roots, the thickness of the wood and more. In ground beds, although better at retaining moisture, are far worse when it comes to adequate drainage. I would really like to see all the beds filled with all different kinds of vegetable plants.
