Malcolm X Elementary School in Berkeley is one of about 40 schools that fundraise with Farmigo, a startup that delivers local, organic groceries to residents in New York, New Jersey, and northern California. Farmigo began its school fundraising program about a year ago, donating 10% of proceeds--about $30,000 to date--to schools while paying farmers 60% to 70% of revenue. Julie Conoles, who ran the program over the summer at Malcolm X, shows off her Farmigo groceries for the week: kale, yogurt, eggs, lettuce, avocado, bread, carrots, celery, and cilantro. In addition to weekly grocery pickups, Farmigo also organizes farm field trips and tastings at school events to connect students and parents with their food. At Malcolm X, the funds raised through Farmigo go into a general pot, but at other schools, they go directly into the school garden. Every Wednesday afternoon, Rebecca Matthews sets up on the picnic tables in front of Malcolm X Elementary School in Berkeley, California. A marketplace New York and northern California residents use to buy groceries from local farms, Farmigo (pronounced like amigo) began its school fundraising program about a year ago, donating 10% of proceeds, or about $30,000 to date, to schools. With affluent households willing to pay a little extra for quality food, the community at Berkeley is an ideal fit for Farmigo. Matthews jump-started the program at Malcolm X last year, thinking it would be a good way to contribute to the school while getting to know fellow parents. Anna Butterworth, whose 7-year-old and 5-year-old are enrolled at Malcolm X, raved about the selection, especially milk from organic dairy brand Straus Family Creamery. Though the funds raised at Malcolm X go back into its general fund, some schools are using the proceeds to boost their gardening programs. Even swapping one cooked food for a raw option at each meal can make a difference in how you look, feel and perform. Cultured vegetables – (or fermented) vegetables are some of the best foods you can put in your body. Coconut – are one of the most naturally hydrating foods, especially the young varieties. Chia Seeds – they have more omega 3’s and antioxidants than flax and have been used for centuries as a life sustaining food.
Seeds – are high in fiber, vitamin E, and healthy unsaturated fats that can help keep your brain and heart healthy. Seaweeds – such as kelp, nori, wakame and arame have an estimated 10-20 times the average nutrients in land plants and are one of the richest sources of chlorophyll available.

Sprouts – the dormant energy of any grain, seed or legume is the source of life and growth potential that it contains.
Blueberries- they have more antioxidants than any other fruit, quite a bit of heart healthy fiber and are a natural brain food. Bee Pollen – unless, of course, you are allergic to bees or their pollen, this is one of nature’s most immaculate raw superfoods.
Pumpkin, sunflower, hemp seeds, and sesame seeds are all great additions to your salad or wonderful for snacks. We had 770 new members sign up for our Thanksgiving campaign, generating 5lb a piece for a total of 3,850 pounds of food.
