I titled this Survival Cell Phone Hacks – The Modern Day MacGyver because we might find ourselves in a situation where we don’t have our regular supplies, or we are so far off the grid we might need to cannibalize our cell phone and MacGyver our way out of it.
The odds are we will never have to do anything like this, but it’s good to add to our knowledge database…just in case. In the video below I took an old cell phone with a cracked screen and tore into it to see what I could find that might be useful. I made an arrowhead out of the circuit board and attached it to a stick which could be used as a fishing spear or weapon. I don't believe that the end of the world will be the "end of the world" I believe it will be the end of the world as we know it now. I don’t know about you, but years ago, I carried a Swiss Army Knife in my bag all the time.
It’s 2015, and our idea of daily survival has slightly changed since the days of the Swiss Army Knife. There actually is a compass feature on the iPhone under “utilities.” I can’t say I’ve ever used it, but a compass would be a very handy tool to have in a time of need. The built-in flashlight feature on the iPhone has saved me several times from falling down the stairs or stubbing my toe late at night. The iPhone and the Swiss Army Knife are clearly different, but both very useful in their respective ways. Many non-preppers look at this movement as a bunch of doom and gloomers who are actually hoping for the end of the world so that they can finally put their survival plan into action. I do not believe that the majority of preppers have a negative doom-and-gloom outlook, but instead are more than likely to be self motivated optimistic people with good sense and awareness, and living ordinary lives like most everyone else.
The prepper may appear to be seeking out doom and gloom, but in actuality is staying current with the risks that are facing the world, knowing that being one step ahead of the crowd could very well save them from unnecessary hardship, or life itself. Modern survivalism really is a way of life, not necessarily one that is drastically removed from the creature comforts that we enjoy today, but a state of mind where one instinctively questions the news around them and has the ability to recognize when something isn’t quite right, prepares oneself to adapt to circumstances around them, and where choices are made from common sensibility.
The modern survivalist does not take for granted the things that make life so easy right now.
We can offer supplies and skills (nursing, teaching, and building) and most importantly TRUE GRIT.

Good post, and I agree…as long as you do not depend on technology for your survival it can help. By Dale Leave a Comment In any kind of survival situation it’s important to be able to use the supplies we have around us. The definition of a prepper is "An individual or group that prepares or makes preparations in advance of, or prior to, any change in normal circumstances, without substantial resources from outside sources" Like the Government, police etc. It is truly one of the most multi-functional products out there, with several different tools stored compactly in one space. Although an iPhone can’t help you cut up food, provide a screwdriver, or file a nail (at least that I know of), it helps us with different types of survival. Now, it’s more focused on navigating the workday, building our home and personal lives, and squeezing in enough time at the end of the day to relax and do what we love. How many times have you been driving or traveling and gotten lost, only to remember that you had GPS on your phone? This digital compass is a modern twist on the original, with calibration settings and digital reads of your orientation with every turn. I find it interesting how we, myself included, have become so dependent on our phones – for reasons other than making actual phone calls!
But it is my opinion that the majority of preppers today are middle class working people who recognize the current risks within today’s modern day systems, and are quietly preparing for what may or may not come to be.
Having a positive outlook on life is itself one reason why some develop preparedness plans. The times we live in since the industrial revolution are a mere blip on the time-line of humankind. Hacks like these are not meant to replace the tools we have (or should have) already, but you never know when seemingly useless information like this might come in handy. The Swiss Army Knife was the quintessential device for survival, whether you were outside, in a dangerous situation, or even just navigating daily life. Last week while walking home from my daughter’s swim meet in the dark, I pulled out my phone’s handy dandy flashlight to guide me.
However, there are now self-charging cases for your iPhone or Android that recharge your battery while wearing it. Our phones help us be more productive and efficient, whether we are at work or in survival mode. Desiring freedom, happiness, and life, for yourself and family are all positive attributes that are shared by all preppers. Covering a wide range of topics including everything from hand-to-hand combat to safe family travel, the Ultimate Survival Manual has thought of all possible sticky situations and gives readers the know-how they need to get out of them unscathed. They weren’t survivalists; they were just average everyday people who understood the importance of self-reliance and preparation.

Having a flashlight on command is helpful in an array of settings, and you don’t need to worry about replacing the batteries.
Although WiFi won’t help me literally cook or chop food, it helps with so many other steps in the process.
This grab & go accessory will help you stay prepared when your battery enters the red zone.
In fact, up until the last couple of decades, most people understood the need to be prepared.

Unfortunately, today’s world is more worried about what they can take from others, instead of thinking about how they can contribute to society. In today’s world of iPads and cell phones, most people would find it hard to survive a single day in our ancestor’s shoes. All you have to do is look at an event like Hurricane Katrina to see why it’s so important for people to be prepared for the worst.During Hurricane Katrina, the unthinkable happened.
