About NAITSAOur mission is to enhance the NAIT student experience by advocating for their rights, representing their voice, creating a culture of engagement and leadership, while providing student-driven services. A mental health ‘first aid’ course that helps people to identify, understand and support someone with poor mental or emotional health is now available in Exeter. The course aims to make mental health support as important as first aid in the workplace and beyond, giving individuals the confidence to help someone who is experiencing problems.
The announcement coincides with Mental Health Awareness Week which this year is focusing on anxiety, one of the leading causes of mental ill-health in the world. Statistics show that one in four people will experience some kind of mental health problem over the course of a year. The true cost to society has only recently been recognised, and although the Government is determined to close the gap in treatment of physical and mental health conditions and extra investment has been promised, it takes time for funding and policy changes to filter through. The accredited course is similar to a standard first aid course as it teaches people to recognise crucial warning signs, in this case of emotional, rather than physical, distress. Mental Health First Aid is a groundbreaking public education program that helps the public identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. Those who complete the course certify as Mental Health First Aiders, having learned a 5-step action plan encompassing the skills, resources and knowledge to help an individual connect with appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help care. Mental Health First Aid USA is managed, operated and disseminated nationally by the National Council for Behavioral Health, and in Maryland by the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, in partnership with the Mental Health Association of Maryland. Behavioral Health System Baltimore is the area's leading expert and resource in advancing behavioral health and wellness. DeKalb Community Service Board (CSB) is offering a certification course for the Mental Health First Aid adult public education program.

Although many of us know CPR & First Aid, you’re much more likely to encounter someone with mental health symptoms than someone having a heart attack.
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a public education program, similar to CPR and First Aid, which helps people identify, understand, and respond to individuals experiencing signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders.
You are more likely to encounter someone — friend, family member, coworker, neighbor, or member of the community — in an emotional or mental crisis than someone having a heart attack. The Elizabeth Fry Society, Sudbury is dedicated to addressing the needs of persons in conflict with the law, or at risk of becoming in conflict with the law, and in particular the circumstances of women and young women in the criminal justice system. Mental Health First Aid Canada is a program of the Mental Health Commission of Canada and the Elizabeth Fry Society, Sudbury is now offering this training. Mental Health First Aid is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis.  Just as physical first aid is administered to an injured person before medical treatment can be obtained, MHFA is given until appropriate treatment is found or until the crisis is resolved. Contact Maureen at the Elizabeth Fry Society Sudbury to register for this training session and, for more information and to inquire about future training sessions at 705-673-1364.
Sources of anxiety most prevalent include mounting pressure on employees in the workplace to perform for less reward, increased exam stress for young people and growing numbers of breakdowns in family relationships. We help guide innovative approaches to prevention, early intervention, treatment and recovery for those who are dealing with mental health and substance use disorders to help build healthier individuals, stronger families and safer communities.
Registration and payment for the training is required in advance for the course which will be held April 22 from 8 am to 5 pm at the Richardson Health Center in Decatur. Participants who complete the 8-hour training will be certified as Mental Health First Aiders.

Whether you are a first responder, educator, faith community leader, medical professional, social service agency employee or volunteer, parent, employer, human resources professional, or caring community member— this course has information everyone can use. The agency serves children, adolescents and adults and offers a wide array of clinical and support services.
Mental Health First Aid teaches a 5-step action plan to offer initial help to people with the signs and symptoms of a mental illness or in a crisis, and connect them with the appropriate professional, peer, social, or self help care.
Those who complete a course receive a valuable learning experience and gain new skills that are useful in all aspects of life.
MHFA was developed by the National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare for members of the community.
Anyone can take the 8-hour Mental Health First Aid course — first responders, students, teachers, leaders of faith communities, human resources professionals, and caring citizens. Please note that this is a class offering basic information designed for the general public and not a higher level training for mental health professionals. Have you met people experiencing suicidal thoughts or suffering from addiction to drugs or alcohol? Mental health crises occur frequently in your workplace, church, family, school and community.
