The Health and Safety Executive have announced two revised health and safety regulations this month, one of which was the RIDDOR legislation changes and another was changes to The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981.
According to the HSE greater flexibility has been introduced for managing the provision of first aid training. The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 have been amended to remove the requirement for HSE to approve first aid training and qualifications. The change is part of HSE’s work to reduce the burden on businesses and put common sense back in to health and safety, while maintaining standards.
The HSE website also provides information for employers, employees, first-aiders and training organisations on first aid at work. Businesses have a responsibility to report incidents and accidents under the RIDDOR regulations.
From 30 September 2011 anyone seeking basic health and safety advice from the HSE Infoline telephone service needs to know that this service will cease to exist. All other work related injuries which are reportable under RIDDOR can be reported using one of 7 new online forms.

The HSE has published guidance to help organisations find competent first aid trainers in the absence of any official accreditation in the future. From October 1st, the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 will be amended, to remove the requirement for the HSE to approve first aid training providers and qualifications. The changes, originally planned for April this year, are part of the Governments response to the recommendations made by Professor Lofstedt in his 2011 review of health and safety legislation. Going forward, when a first-aid needs assessment indicates that trained first-aiders are required, organisations must ensure training providers are competent to deliver their first aid training needs and have the right quality assurance systems. Important changes to the first aid at work regulations were implemented by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) from October 2013. These new legislation place the onus of responsibility on the employer and gives businesses more flexibility to choose the training that’s right for them. The HSE has revised its guidance on equipment and provision of a workplace first aid room or area. Should an employee be injured at work, the first aid room is a safe place for treatment, away from any other hazards that could cause further injury. One of the recommended items for these first aid rooms is a ‘foot operated refuse container, lined with disposable, yellow clinical waste bags or a container suitable for the safe disposal of clinical waste’.

Clinical waste cannot be disposed of the same was as normal rubbish, so it must be collected and disposed of separately.
The Wybone Waste Bin is an ideal choice for use in First Aid Rooms, as they are foot pedal operated and even available with a yellow lid and base so it cannot be mistaken for a regular bin. The bin is also extremely quick and easy to clean, ideal for keeping it hygienic after it has been collecting clinical waste. Wybone waste bins has a wide range of options including a hands-free waste bin frame, silent lids and colour options, the bin is both efficient and flexible.
It is recognised that in these traumatic cases, speaking to another human who can help them, is the most beneficial way of dealing with the situation.
