Alberta Barley has received an historic grant from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s AgriInnovation Program. Ultimately, this comprehensive project has the potential to stimulate demand for barley while reducing the costs and risks of growing it—making barley a more profitable crop. The AgriInnovation Program aims to make advances in economic growth, productivity, competitiveness, adaptability and sustainability in Canadian agriculture while creating new opportunities in domestic and international markets. These training modules have previously-been delivered across Ontario by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) and are available in both English and French.

The grants are designed to support agricultural research and development, as well as commercialization and adoption of emerging agricultural innovations. The delivery of this training program is funded by Growing Forward 2, a federal-provincial-territorial initiative. The goal of the cluster project is to accelerate the development of all classes of barley varieties through the adoption of best practices in technology, agronomic methods, crop management, breeding and genetic techniques, and the development of new value-added market applications. The program is a five-year, $698 million initiative existing under the Growing Forward 2 policy framework for Canada’s agriculture and agri-food sector.
