You could overwinter sweet potato vines that are growing in pots by bringing the whole container inside for the winter.
You can leave sweet potato vine cuttings growing in water all winter long, or you can pot them up into a container once the roots have formed. One of the biggest challenges of overwintering your sweet potato vine plant indoors is controlling houseplant pests.
Sweet potato vines are pretty easy to overwinter indoors as cuttings or houseplants, and it’s worth the effort to save yourself money every spring.
One thing I’ve tried to find info on online and never could find an exact answer… can the vine be grown from the tubers the next year? I loved this article and am struggling here in the UK to grow the slips, I think i will have to buy some from a specialist which will be expensive. The cockscomb plant is versatile in height, sometimes remaining as short as a few inches while others grow to a few feet. Learn how to grow cockscomb and others of the cockscomb Celosia family for attractive specimens in the summer flower bed. The cockscomb flower may also be a fat and spiky little plant, growing in colors other than the vibrant red. The cockscomb plant is useful in garden borders or planted between taller plants in the garden to add a spike of color near ground level.
Learning how to grow cockscomb is an interesting garden chore and can brighten the flower bed with shades of golden yellow, traditional red, peach and purple. Pinching back the first bloom on these flowers can cause branching and a more abundant display of flowers on each cockscomb plant. For chives, you will want to do this so that the plant won’t set seed, and to keep it looking tidy. The easiest way to deadhead chives is to give the whole plant a haircut just below the flowers with a hedge trimming shears.
When chive plants are mature and loaded with flowers, they can benefit from a hoop style support so the flowers don’t droop to the ground. One of the most boring parts of our garden design is also one of our most necessary- walkways, patios and driveways. Concrete Stain- We used 2 gallons of Behr Semi Transparent Concrete Stain on an average concrete patio. If stripping is not needed, simply clean the concrete really well with water and a little vinegar or mild soap. We used a roller and tray to apply the stain to the floor, then used a round household sponge to dab a texture into the stain before it dries. Advantage of using sealer: Stain will last much longer and will have a little more shine to it.
Disadvantage of using sealer: When you eventually want to freshen the stain, or need to repair a spot, you will have to strip the concrete first.

Be sure to save the can, or record the color in the case you wish to re coat the concrete somewhere in the future.

But rather than overwintering containers, I find that it’s much easier to take cuttings of my sweet potato vines to overwinter indoors. When you put the sweet potato vine cuttings into water, you want to make sure there aren’t any leaves touching the water, so keep this in mind as you take your cuttings. Soaking the cuttings for about 10 minutes will drown any pests insect that are on the plant. This will help to remove bugs, dirt and debris from the cuttings, and any soap that is left over after soaking. I like to use a clear vase so I can see the roots as they start to form, but any vase will work. If you choose to overwinter them in the vase of water, check the water periodically to make sure it’s not slimy or evaporating too quickly. In my experience, sweet potato vines are very prone to houseplant pests like white flies and spider mites, so check on them regularly for signs of infestation. Early March I take one of my tubers from the previous year (one that is sprouting) and break off the slips, placing them into a vase with water.
Cockscomb, Celosia cristata, traditionally grown in the red variety, also blooms in yellow, pink, orange and white. But cockscomb may grow in only partial sun, so it can happily exist when partially shaded by taller plants.
The term deadheading refers to cutting off the flowers on a plant after they are spent (done blooming). Chives can be pretty aggressive reseeders and if you don’t remove the flowers before they set seed, you will find tiny chive plants all around your gardens in the spring. You can enjoy them for most of the year since they grow early in the spring and will stay green well into the fall.
I haven’t tried the flowers myself, but have heard people saying they toss them into salads and other recipes. Most of us have simple poured concrete, and while it definitely does the job, it is, in a word, boring. I was interested in staining my concrete countertops (a project I’m currently in the middle of).
No need for permission to pin or to feature 1 or 2 pictures with full watermarks intact that link back to the original project.
Sweet potato vines root easily in water, and cuttings can be kept inside all winter, then replanted into the garden or containers in the spring. I like to make my cuttings about a foot long, so there is plenty of length on the stem for rooting in water.

To help control houseplant pests, you could spray the sweet potato vines with a Neem oil solution. Roots develop fairly quickly and when frost is past, I put it out into the garden in late May, straight from the vase. They are black, about half the size of a peppercorn, and they will fall out onto the ground when the plant is disturbed.
Try to keep the edge wet as you work to prevent a hard line, but with the texture, its pretty forgiving. Be sure to roll on using light coats and allow to dry thoroughly between coats if you do more than one.
But it’s expensive to buy new sweet potato vine plants every spring, so I always overwinter it. The sweet potato vine cuttings may droop or even drop a few leaves after you put them into the vase, this is normal and they should pop back after a few days. Neem oil is an organic product that prevents houseplant pest infestations, and helps make it easier to control houseplant pests.
In areas farther north, make sure the soil has warmed before planting, as letting the cockscomb plant get a chill can cause summer flowering to cease or not happen.
Here’s how to stain a concrete patio yourself, without a sprayer, without expensive commercial products, and without taking a huge chunk out of your checkbook. Although the stain does penetrate the concrete to some degree, I wouldna€™t drag heavy objects across it.
Do you think it will last a good while or would it need to be restained over and over again?
Don’t panic if it looks like a total failure at this point…it WILL need a second coat! Sweet potato vine cuttings root quickly in water, and the warmer the room is the faster the cuttings will root.
If you choose to overwinter sweet potato vine cuttings in a pot as a houseplant, place the pot into a sunny window and keep the soil evenly moist.
So if you want to start new plants or share the seeds with friends, the sooner you do it, the better.
Behr makes a concrete stripped for this purpose, I’m sure there are other products as well.
You can touch it up with a paintbrush and dab with a paper towel for tiny chips or scrapes. Note: If your sponge is not round, simply tear away chunks of the edges before using so you wont have any hard edge marks in your stain.
