Tina Bayden sells skinned frogs at the Laoag public market in Ilocos Norte in the northern Philippines, October 2, 2005. Shown here are two normal frogs and four deformed frogs with missing limbs and limb duplications. But not all frogs have these adaptations, so climate change could affect frogs' abilities to keep their bodies at the right temperature. GenusRana (1)Undoubtedly Britain's most well-known amphibian, the common frog (Rana temporaria) is often found in garden ponds (2).
The male common frog tends, on average, to be slightly smaller than the female, and can be identified by whitish swellings on the inner digits of the front feet, which support dark pads during the breeding season that allow the male to effectively grasp a female (5).
Common frog biologyCommon frogs hibernate through the winter, either at the bottom of ponds (breathing through their skin) or on land under refuges such as compost heaps (5). In spring, male common frogs arrive at breeding areas before females, and it is thought that individuals return to their natal ponds by following scents (5).
You can view distribution information for this species at the National Biodiversity Network Gateway. Common frog habitatThe common frog is found in a wide range of habitats, and breeds in puddles, ditches, ponds and large lakes as well as urban and rural garden ponds (5). Common frog statusThe common frog is classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (1). Common frog conservationIt is illegal to sell common frogs under the Wildlife and Countryside Act, 1981 (2). There may be further information about this species available via the National Biodiversity Network Gateway. GlossaryHibernateA winter survival strategy characteristic of some mammals in which an animal's metabolic rate slows down and a state of deep sleep is attained. A dormouse box looks a little like a bird box with a small round hole and should be positioned on a tree with the hole facing the tree trunk so that the mouse can climb in. Some secretions are beneficial -- researchers have used some of them to create new antibiotics and painkillers. In some parts of the world, frog population has declined due to habitat destruction during development and the damming of rivers and streams.
Frogs are largely ectothermic -- they rely on their environment to control their body temperature. Changes in the global climate may have made it easier for a deadly fungus to spread through the frog population around the world. They are typically brown or greyish in colour, but some individuals may be yellow or reddish. During the rest of the year they hunt on land on damp nights; they feed on snails, slugs, worms and a range of insects (5). There is typically heavy competition amongst males for females, involving much croaking and wrestling. It is protected in Britain under Schedule 5 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act (1981), with respect to sale only (3).
Since the increase in popularity of garden ponds, however, it has experienced a welcome recovery. Whilst hibernating, animals survive on stored reserves of fat that they have accumulated in summer. Since it can be difficult to farm raise frogs, this requires people to hunt and capture them. The flanks are usually yellow, the underside white, and the upper surfaces feature variable blackish markings (5). Males grab a female and remain clasped to her body for days or weeks before spawning takes place. It is not currently threatened, but populations are vulnerable to the destruction and pollution of water bodies (4). In insects, the correct term for hibernation is 'diapause', a temporary pause in development and growth. Poison dart frogs, also known as dart poison and poison arrow frogs, are the most famous example.

Chemicals, drug residues and other pollutants in the water appear to be causing everything from deformed limbs to feminized male sexual organs in frogs. The large hind legs feature webbed feet; they power strong jumps and an excellent swimming ability, and are covered with dark bands, which provide camouflage (5). Their toxicity is partially due to their diet -- in captivity, without the right ants to feed on, they're not as dangerous. Up to 45 percent of its body freezes in the winter, and proteins and glucose protect its tissues from damage. They may not be killed, injured, disturbed in their nests, collected, trapped or sold except under licence Mice Wood mice and yellow necked mice sometimes nest in bumblebee boxes. But even common toads can be toxic, which is why dogs can get very sick or die from eating toads. These are usually sited along a fence, under a hedge or in a border where there's good cover for foraging mice. For example, the four-eyed frog, Physalaemus nattereri, has two spots that look like eyes near its back legs.
Other frogs hibernate or go into a hibernation-like state called aestivation to survive hot weather in the summer. After 10-14 days, the tadpoles hatch, becoming free-swimming a few days later, and undergoing metamorphosis into adults 10-15 weeks after hatching. HedgehogsHedgehogs are often called the gardener's friend because they can help to control pests.
