Peanuts are the leading cause of food-related anaphylaxis in the United States. The most important and most powerful peanut allergy survival skill you can learn is how to recognize and treat anaphylaxis.
This free educational anaphylaxis poster from Allergic Living outlines the symptoms of anaphylaxis and explains the basics of how to treat it until emergency help arrives. Although hives are a common in anaphylaxis, it is possible for a person to go into anaphylaxis without obvious hives.
Do not ignore other signs of a severe allergic reaction just because hives or dramatic facial swelling are not present. If any two major organ systems are affected by anaphylaxis symptoms, anaphylaxis may be present.
Many people, including, unfortunately, some EMTs and doctors who are not allergy specialists, believe incorrectly that over-the-counter antihistamines like diphenhydramine (aka Benadryl) should be given first to a person suffering from a severe allergic reaction, and that epinephrine should be reserved only for cases where antihistamines fail. This is an outdated and dangerous idea.
The side effects of epinephrine are much less dangerous than the potential effects of anaphylaxis. It is better to use epinephrine in a case where it might not have been needed than fail to use it when needed. All people with a known peanut allergy should consider themselves to be at risk for life-threatening anaphylaxis. If a child with an allergy is too young to self-carry his or her own medication, a trusted adult should do it for him or her. Another commonly prescribed epinephrine autoinjector, the Auvi-Q, actually talks to you and tells you how to use the device. The EpiPen and the Auvi-Q both come with needle-free training devices you can use to practice using the devices yourself and also to train others. There are also generic versions of epinephrine autoinjectors available, but they do not share the advanced safety features of the EpiPen and Auvi-Q; the needle is usually exposed after use.
After a person has been injected epinephrine for an allergic reaction, that person should always go straight to the hospital, preferably via ambulance (a person who is having an allergic reaction should not drive him or herself to the hospital– see the dizziness and loss of consciousness symptoms mentioned above!). This is not because epinephrine is a dangerous drug. Epinephrine is safe to administer at the doses provided in autoinjector.
Studies show that up to 20% of people who experience anaphylaxis will require more than one dose of epinephrine to recover. Also, sometimes a person will seem to recover fully from an anaphylactic reaction and then suffer a relapse of allergic symptoms several hours or even a day or two later. When we first started using insulin, it was animal-sourced insulin that came from pigs and cattle.
Fortunately, in the 1980s genetic research helped us to start making insulin from human cells.
The first type of response your body can produce to insulin is a localized allergic response.
So if you are on insulin and are experiencing any of the problems listed above, talk to your doctor as you might have developed an allergy. North Carolina State University entomologists discovered the neural mechanism behind roaches' aversion to glucose, the simple sugar that is a popular ingredient in roachbait poison. In normal German cockroaches, glucose elicits activity in sugar gustatory receptor neurons, which react when exposed to sugars like glucose and fructose — components of corn syrup, a common roach-bait ingredient. Heart disease, diabetes, skin irritation, aches and pains – all of these things may be caused by out-of-control inflammation. Much more than just sneezing or a few itchy hives, anaphylaxis can cause dangerous, life-threatening symptoms including a steep drop in blood pressure and swelling of the airways, both of which can cause damage to vital organs and prevent oxygen from reaching the brain.

Common visible symptoms of anaphylaxis include dizziness, disorientation or loss of consciousness (from the drop in blood pressure),  stomach upset, vomiting, diarrhea, wheezing, coughing,  and swelling of the lips, throat or tongue. Although facial swelling is also common, it is possible for a person to develop swelling in the airways before swelling in the face. So if a person with a known food allergy has hives and breathing difficulty, think anaphylaxis. If you suspect that a person with a known allergy to peanuts is having an anaphylactic reaction, you should administer epinephrine as soon as possible. It is not the protocol that top health organizations like the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology recommend.
The severity of previous allergic reactions to food does not reliably predict the severity of future reactions. At school, epinephrine should be stored in a place where a child with a peanut allergy can have access to it in five minutes or less. This means you may need to keep it in an insulated case when outdoors on particularly hot or cold days.
In my experience it takes 15 minutes or less to teach someone how to use an epinephrine auto-injector correctly.
For this reason I would recommend using a brand name autoinjector, at least until the generic devices improve.
A person who has been injected with epinephrine for suspected or confirmed anaphylaxis should go straight to the hospital because anaphylaxis is dangerous, and a single dose of epinephrine might not be enough by itself to stop a reaction.
This is called a biphasic reaction and it may require further treatment including epinephrine, antihistamines or steroids. The author of this blog is not a doctor, and none of the information provided here should be considered a substitute for a doctor's advice.
Training manuals are particularly useful in the following situations: Trainees can use the manuals for reviewing the subject after training.
While stress, lack of exercise and genetics can all cause chronic inflammation, a steady diet of sugars and processed food can do the same.
In extreme cases a person’s lips and fingers may start to turn blue from lack of oxygen.
But if you have been diagnosed with a peanut allergy, for the purposes of deciding whether or not to carry an epinephrine autoinjector, your previous history of reactions doesn’t matter. That means that a locked cabinet in an office far from the child’s classroom is not a good place to store epinephrine (despite what school staff might try to tell you). After an EpiPen brand autoinjector is used, a special plastic cover pops out immediately to cover the needle.
More epinephrine, antihistamines, steroids, oxygen, or other interventions may be required. But just in case help does not arrive in time, allergists now recommend that people with life-threatening food allergies carry two epinephrine injectors.
Researchers learned this by combining the glucose with food colouring and watching it get ingested or rejected by the normal or glucose-averse roaches, respectively.
It lets the trainee concentrate on and partake in the training during the training session instead of taking detailed notes.
Replace some of the worst culprits in your diet with their anti-inflammatory counterparts with these simple swaps!
If a person with a known food allergy is vomiting and feels faint, but has no hives, recognize that vomiting and dizziness alone might still be signs of anaphylaxis.
Because the truth is, every single allergic reaction happens under different circumstances. It should be kept somewhere that is easily accessible, and taken with the child on field trips, trips to other school buildings, etc. A number of different factors can influence the severity of an allergic reaction to food: how much of the food was eaten? This means that if you use these brands of autoinjectors properly, you never even have to see the needle inside, and there is no risk of accidentally stabbing yourself with the needle after the device has already been used.

Another major advantage is that all the training information on skills, processes, and other information necessary to perform the tasks is together in one place. Training manuals can be designed to be used as: Work books ???‚a€? often used in training sessions. Designing the manual[edit]A well designed training manual, that is kept up to date, can become a valuable source of information to the organization.
As preparation for the training session give a list of key points or a summary of what is going to be covered at the start of each chapter. What are the key elements of a Training Manual[edit]The Training Manual may contain the following elements. A Cover page with plain or graphic with Title clearly written.A Blank page after the cover page. An Introduction page on What- How- Who - "What the Manual is about", "How to use the Manual" & "For whom the Manual is meant"A Navigational Tips page with visually catchy icons which will be used throughout the manual. Be consistent in the use of terminology, tone and style of writing.Long sentences and paragraphs can be confusing. Include illustrations (graphs, flow charts, tables, pictures, screen displays, examples of finished tasks) where appropriate to clarify concepts and enhance understanding. It also adds visual interest. Write a detailed table of contents that include chapter headings as well as the next level of subheadings.
A good index makes the manual usable as a reference work for future use.Check spelling and grammar. The title page, table of contents, a glossary of terms (if used) and the index are prepared last.
On the title page the following should appear: Name of the manual, author(s), company name, publishing date. A copyright notice can be included, as well as acknowledgement of contributors if appropriate. Presentation[edit]An attractive appearance and ease of use can motivate the trainees to use the manual and thus reinforce learning.Good page layout increase readability and make the information more accessible.
The organization of the material on the page guides the eye of the reader ???‚a€? which areas get attention and in what order. That is part of organizing the content in a logical order.Avoid too many separate elements on the page.
Contrast: Creating contrast between sections visually organise the page, leading the eye in a logical flow from one section to the next. Avoid all uppercase ???‚a€? it is difficult to read ???‚a€? use bold, italic or other versions of the font for emphasis.
Titles, headings and subheadings should be in a larger size font than the body of the text. When combining different fonts, use fonts that are clearly distinct to create contrast. Ease of use: [edit]Another consideration apart from the page layout is the collation of the manual to make the final product easy to use. A detailed table of contents at the beginning of sections, in addition to the main table of contents at the front of the manual makes it more accessible. Allow wide enough margins to accommodate the type of binding used, as well as space for users to make key notes. To route items to appropriate storage places. To follow up on further action as indicated in messages. Slide book past scanner to wand in the barcode number.Read message on screen and place discharged book in appropriate place. Comment: This format works well in the on- the- job training situation where step- by- step instructions are given for fairly simple tasks.
