This 1 day Southampton based training course is suitable for employers who have identified a requirement for Emergency First Aiders at Work or an Appointed Person in their First Aid Needs Assessment. Our instructors deliver dynamic courses that relate the subjects being taught to real life situations, which makes our training more applicable to your first aiders. We run courses every month at our Southampton Saxon Wharf classrooms which benefit from a central location with free parking.
The new First Aid at Work Guidelines for Employers from the Health and Safety Executive are effective from 1st October 2009. One of the more complicated areas of the new first aid needs assessment is considering 'the nature of the work, the hazards and the risks'. The table is not comprehensive and does not cover all the risks that could occur in a workplace, so you should look at each area of the workplace and document the risks and the possible injuries.
One reason for this exercise is to ensure that you provide the correct type of first aider(s).
You should ensure that your first aiders are trained to deal with the injuries and illness that could occur. Extra, specialised training and provision may be needed for hazards such as chemicals, dangerous machinery, working in confined spaces etc. You should also consider the possible illnesses that could occur in the workplace and ensure you have adequate provision.
You should consider the needs and health of all workers and ensure that first aiders are available and trained to deal with specific health needs.
You should look at the organisations history of accidents and illness to try and identify any needs or trends that may influence the location or type of first aider. First Aid should be available wherever people work so you may need to consider providing personal first aid kits or training to travelling, remote or lone workers.
If the workplace is remote from emergency medical services you may need to make special transport arrangements should an incident occur.
Even in urban areas you should be aware that it often takes more than 10 minutes for an ambulance crew to reach a casualty, so the correct provision of first aid is a vital link in reducing the effects of illness or injury. On shared work sites it may be possible to share first aid provision, such as the security team providing first aid cover at a large shopping centre.
You should ensure that adequate first aid cover is available at all times, including when a first aider is on annual leave, a training course, a lunch break or other foreseeable absences. If your first aid needs assessment identifies the need for a 'First Aider at Work' (18 hour course), it is not acceptable to provide an 'Emergency First Aider at Work' (6 hour course) to cover foreseeable absences. For large events such as concerts, organisers have a duty of care to ensure that adequate medical, ambulance and first aid cover is available. The number of people on a site should no longer be the primary basis for determining first aid needs; all the areas of the new first aid needs assessment should be carefully considered. That 'non-manual', low risk workplaces (such as shops, offices, libraries) have a minimum of one first aider on duty at all times per 100 people (or part thereof). That 'manual' workplaces (light assembly work, warehousing, food processing or higher risks), have a minimum of one first aider on duty at all times per 50 people (or part thereof).
You should review your first aid needs from time to time, particularly if you have operational changes in your workplace. Due to the wealth of evidence on the severity of 'first aid skill fade', the HSE now recommend that all First Aiders attend annual refresher training.
We know this isn’t cheerful stuff and of course many first aid situations are nowhere near as dramatic as that. For a small, low-risk business a first aid box plus an appointed person who’s in charge of first aid arrangements (like checking and restocking the box and calling the emergency services if needed) could well be enough and no specific training’s required.
But if your assessment reveals health and safety risks or issues with the workplace or workforce, you need to take a careful look at the possibility of providing suitable facilities and more extensive equipment.
Start by considering whether a one day Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course is sufficient for your needs. Some employees who aren’t trained in first aid may be prepared to give it a go without proper training.

You need to make sure employees who are to become first-aiders are confident enough to cope with all potential first aid situations. But our trainer Dave Redmond does the next best thing and uses special effects make up to recreate some of the injuries that first-aiders might encounter. Dave runs our Qualsafe accredited first aid courses at our training centre in Mold, but he can also tailor courses to your particular workplace and run them there too.
This is a simple way of approaching CXR, and it works for many people, however some people still struggle using this approach.
Inspiration a€“ 5-6 anterior ribs in MCL or 8-10 posterior ribs above diaphragm, poor inspiration?, hyperexpanded? Exposure (Penetration) a€“ IV disc spaces, spinous processes to ~T4, L) hemidiaphragm visible through cardiac shadow. Hilum a€“ T6-7 IV disc level, left hilum is usually higher (2cm) and squarer than the V-shaped right hilum. Why not grab a copy of our Basic CXR Interpretation flow chart and put it up in your ward or clinic.
Your points about the visual details and summaries integrated into the PACS system would be great. If you have an approach to CXR that you find useful for new learners, I would be happy to hear it.
I’m not disputing that having a system that is inclusive is a good idea, or that repetition and reinforcement will help the learner -- but when the acronym is too contrived it is harder to remember, and when multiple subjects share the same acronym the value is probably diluted rather than augmented.
Rather than selecting a piece of anatomy like above, when submitting an imaging request (electronically ideally), tags could be added (e.g. There is no concrete way to interpret an Xray, whatever the system one employs, should be one that can outline all the relevant information to make a diagnosis as accurate as much as possible. ANSWER SHEETS BLS for Healthcare Providers Written Exam Name Date Version Test # Question Answer 1. The Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers Classroom Course is designed to provide a wide variety of healthcare professionals the ability to recognize. Written Test (Version A or B) Students must score at least 84% on the written test to pass this. The focus of this course is on preventing situations from becoming worse and learning the vital life saving skills that a trained Emergency First Aider can use until help arrives. Because of the wide spread availability of this course, it has also become a popular option for anyone requiring basic first aid training for variety situations outside the workplace.
You should consider the risks and identify what possible injuries could occur in order to ensure sufficient first aid provision is available.
There may be circumstances when a higher level of cover is needed when less people are at work, such as overnight maintenance work in a normally low risk environment.
Consider extra first aiders on large sites, sites with multiple buildings or buildings with multiple floors. It is important to fully exchange details of the hazards and risks so that adequate first aid cover is provided. This generally means that workplaces need more than one first aider to ensure that cover is maintained.
Organisers of such events should refer to The Event Safety Guide, published by HSE books, for further information.
However, in general terms the larger your organisation is, the more first aiders you will need. It is recommended that a record is kept of incidents dealt with by first aiders to assist in this process. But these types of situations can happen and it’s essential people know what they are doing and are prepared if they suddenly find themselves involved in one. That means you need to do a first aid needs assessment  that considers your workplace circumstances, the workforce itself as well as any health and safety hazards and risks that might be present.
The course enables trainees to give emergency first aid to someone who’s injured or becomes ill at work.

The consequences of getting it wrong, no matter how well intentioned, could be catastrophic.  Make sure employees are clear that if they’re not first aid trained, they should not be dealing with any incidents.
While most would feel prepared to administer first aid for minor injuries, it’s a very different situation when you’re faced with a major injury and the training must prepare people for that. It’s not a sight anyone relishes looking at but it’s far better to become acquainted with the realities of the situation as far as you can before you have to cope with an actual emergency. There are many approaches to CXR interpretation, each trying to ensure that key abnormalities are identified and no area is overlooked. In light of this, a colleague of mine Matthew Lumchee, developed an approach that was both more encompassing but also familiar. Creator of IVLine investigating and sharing information on public health issues, clinical and biomedical sciences and medical education. But the need for an acronym is for when you DON’T have the information accessible and need to remember it.
The mnemonic was merely meant as a way of learning an approach to X-Rays for medical students. Name, date, subject, orientation, position, adequacy then proceeding on to the actual image.
I was thinking visual aids would be great and was trying to remember where I saw a good example of it. I like the DRSABCD, it gives a structure, but also the other system that has been highlighted is also useful as well. Our Team, headed by Mike Cadogan & Chris Nickson, consists (mostly) of emergency physicians and intensivists based in Australia and New Zealand. They may have been on a First Aid course, but were they tested rigorously to ensure that they would confidently provide appropriate first aid if something happened to your child?Time and again, people look for cheap First Aid courses, which typically involve large groups of trainees being talked at by an inexperienced trainer and then awarded their certificates with minimal assessment – this will not equip them with the vital skills and knowledge they need to confidently help your child in an emergency.Every day children die needlessly in the UK - when basic first aid could have saved their lives. This is particularly relevant if you provide a service for others such as schools, places of entertainment, shops etc. You, or one of your employees, could suddenly be caught up in a first aid emergency situation where, as those vital minutes slip by, you (or they) are the sole determining factor in whether someone lives or dies. Alternatively the 3 day First Aid at Work course is a more detailed programme that covers EFAW but also helps the first-aider to apply first aid to a more extensive range of injuries and illnesses. Dave helps trainees understand how to mentally prepare themselves for being in that kind of situation as well as teaching them the practical first aid they need to administer. In general, I think that the more ways someone can learn material, is only going to help in the long run. Like in BioDigitalHuman you should also be able to search for common radiological findings of certain conditions, if clinically indicated within PACS.
A B C D Written Test (Version A or B) Students must score at least 84% on the written test to pass this. Both qualifications last for 3 years so if someone’s going to continue as a first-aider, they’ll need to requalify once it expires. Not only does it mean your business is better prepared if a serious first aid incident happens. The Mnemonic is not perfect, but we tried to bring back something familiar to medical students, that is DRSABCD from basic life support, to aid in memorising at least the core components of CXR interpretation. Depending on your business, there are also more specific courses available such as Paediatric First Aid. It also sends out a powerful message about caring for your employees and those around them both inside and outside the workplace.
