This two-book series presents a student-centered method for developing conversation fluency.
Even though the author never clearly states which age group she had in mind for her audience, her book appears to be primarily suited for young adults, as the pictures and topics center on this age group. Each unit has two lessons, and each lesson has five parts: speaking, listening, grammar, conversation, and communication. The second lesson of each unit has related vocabulary and grammar, but each lesson is self-contained. The second activity is an identification task, either a ranking or multiple-choice exercise. The grammar-point focus is usually exemplified in a chart or table, then read aloud on the class CD, followed by students repeating what has been said. The communication task is often a group activity, but there is some pair work as well, both of which can take the form of various games, information gaps, surveys, and interviews. If your students are taking English as a requirement, then I would recommend Talk Time as a basic oral communication text.

OCTOBER 2006: An English conversation textbook series focused specifically on Korean students of English. The Speaking for Everyday Life approach is to present dialogs, vocabulary and activities that are related to everyday life in Korea, encouraging students to speak about things they are familiar with while having fun with the numerous language and cultural activities included in each unit.
Each unit starts with a short introductory activity designed to establish the unit's theme and create a need for the vocabulary and grammar points taught on the following pages. Most importantly, students are then set free to enjoy the numerous activities that serve to practice the language in a less structured, more natural setting.

You listen to the conversation as many times as you need to until you understand it perfectly and know how to pronounce each word.
After that you can read the conversation as many times as you need to until you can read and understand it fluently.


In order to cement your learning while having lots of fun, each conversation features exercises, word games and grammatical explanations.
Now, you too can enjoy the amazing richness of the Hebrew language, and the history of its words.
Each conversation teaches basic grammar rules: verbs, nouns, adjectives, question words, etc. It combines a picture-dictionary approach with a variety of learning activities based on familiar themes of everyday life.
There seems to be some attempt to address ethnicity, as the pictures and names represent various groups. Moreover, on the next page, a more detailed table can be found which lays out each unit’s theme, and grammar and vocabulary focus. There are a total of twelve thematic units, which according to the author should provide between 24 and 36 hours of classroom instruction.
There are pictures that introduce the unit’s vocabulary, and a brief two-sentence dialogue as an example of what students are expected to learn. The class CD covers all sections except the communicative task, which has no listening element.
Each unit has a conveniently designed test for scoring, with a transcript of the listening portion included. In addition, there is also a unit by unit, section by section basic explanation to support the teacher.
It is very simple, and would be appropriate for those who need just a cursory exposure to basic conversational English. The speakers are clearly trying to articulate what they are saying by speaking slowly, and therefore some of the language comes off as rather mechanical. The updated books follow the same structure as the originals (no need to upend your syllabus), but with updated dialogs, images, and themes (e.g. The books are specifically designed to match the needs and interests of Korean students; just open to chapter one and get started! No more struggling to modify materials to appeal to your students, no more trying to figure out how to incorporate Korean culture and Konglish into your lessons, no more wishing for activities specifically targeting the needs of Korean students - it's all in here already.
Although the focus is on improving speaking skills; additional listening and writing activities are included in each unit. Wrapping up each unit are listening activities, a Konglish section, and free talking questions designed to address any remaining weak points, while further improving the targeted listening and speaking skills.
Each lesson is based on one of 18 conversations concerning everyday situations, such as at a restaurant, at the Doctor’s office, at the Bank, etc. The conversations describe different situations which reflect the unique atmosphere of daily Israeli life.


This is true for every language, but it is especially true for the Hebrew language whose words and structure are built on roots. According to the author, the texts are designed for high beginning to low-intermediate students. At the back of the student book is a unit by unit review quiz that tests each unit’s vocabulary and grammar focus.
In addition, there is a bubble that illustrates briefly how a student might respond to a question.
On the other hand, the tasks that follow offer a free-form potential practice of the grammar points.
The tasks are sometimes personalized, with the content building on the grammar and vocabulary introduced in the unit. One word is connected to another word, and together they create a family of words that are all related to each other.
The text is oriented toward listening and speaking only, with the stated goal being developing fluency in spoken English. This is quite useful, especially when a teacher is rushed for time yet still wants to measure what students have learned by the end of each unit.
The vocabulary includes words one might use meeting friends, going camping, reading a book, visiting a museum, or seeing a movie. Considering that many textbooks lack any kind of assessment, this is a big plus, especially welcomed I suspect by teachers with heavy workloads. In addition to the CD that accompanies the student book, there is a class CD (separate price) needed for the majority of class work.
Students are supposed to find the material both fun and relevant, and where they can, express their feelings and opinions in response to it.
So while the lessons are independent, there is a loose theme that connects them within the unit. Another positive point is that the vocabulary is introduced in context, and there is plenty of review.
Although the text is written in American English, the CDs have a variety of English accents.
If you have a class where students are sometimes absent, this lack of an incremental structure can accommodate that. Both the design and layout are pleasing to the eye–not too crowded, with plenty of charts and diagrams, as well as good pictures.
