How do you communicate with a person who has no ability to talk or use sign language?  Many people with autism communicate using picture cards.
A Sensory Box is a container filled with any kind of tactile material that kids explore with their hands.
A sensory diet is an activity plan for your child to to stimulate or calm his sensory system. I have been meaning to make a clothespin game with bugs and their legs (the clothespins) for a while, and have just finished it. The game uses a spiral game board shaped like a wrapped piece of candy, and when you land on a space, the number on the space tells you how many legs (clothespins) you can add to your bug. There are several ways to incorporate writing into the game with three different sets of cards that can be picked.
The game is easily modified for different levels of skill and can be played within a short time frame. The kids really enjoy adding the legs to their bugs, and can get very competitive to try and get the most legs first. Also included is a separate game board with the letters on it if you want to avoid using the letter cards. To play the game, you roll the dice and move your piece along the board the correct number of spaces. This game goes great with the bugs in a jar craft and the heart butterflies and heart bugs. Need a Mayer-Johnson Boardmaker solution that meets the needs of your large school district or organization? Everyone uses each of the communication styles from time-to-time, but many people tend to lean on one more heavily.
This provides a great starting point for conversations about communication styles, and replacing aggression and passivity with assertiveness. Professionals who use the tools available on this website should not practice outside of their own areas competency. Also a very common error I see with clients who have learned ASL is getting stuck on the sign "more". There are also assisted communication devices that will create speech for the individual by speaking in a simulated voice (which is often programmable). Narrate your actions and the child's actions, even if the child doesn't respond to you ("We're walking upstairs now.
If you have to buy the treatment or purchase a book before anyone will explain exactly how it works, be suspicious. This resource has everything you need to run interview skills group therapy sessions for young people – a manual including session plans and a CD of resources. With a Sensory Box children are using their sight, touch and smell to experience their environment in a totally new way. An Occupational Therapist can help you come up with a diet that best suits your child.
There are six different styles of bugs that the kids can choose from in order to add their clothespin legs.
One set of cards has the alphabet on it, and can be used with the kids that need to practice simple writing. Here is a free bug that you can print out to try out and add the clothespin legs to him without the full game.
It is also more fun to write sentences when it is part of a game, and doesn’t feel like so much of a chore to some students.
For really young kids, you can use a color dice to move to the right color as I have included a color board as well. These tools are intended to supplement treatment, and are not a replacement for appropriate training. Maybe they had some babble, or would say a few word approximations, but they were unable to reliably communicate their wants and needs to others. Many professionals and parents teach the child to sign "more", and unfortunately the sign then gets generalized.
Tried and tested on young people with speech, language and communication needs with fantastic results. Team building activities and workshops help people develop appropriate work relationships, identify and appreciate the skills of coworkers, and work on beneficial conflict resolution skills.

If an entire room is unrealistic try devoting a corner of a room as a safe sensory area for your child. Since many people on the autism spectrum tend to learn visually, it makes good sense to communicate with images. This game is great for any time of the year since there is no time of the year that sugar and bugs are not enjoyed, but it is definitely appropriate around Valentines day. The second set of cards have words on them for kids who need to practice copying or remembering words. I have also made a game board that is for bowling (like the ocean creature game) for the kids that respond well and enjoy that style of game. I used squinkies and mini littlest pet shop toys as the game pieces to move around the board. Many of my clients who get speech therapy only receive 15-45 minute therapy sessions once per week. The child will randomly walk up to people and sign for more, and no one knows what they want.
Since these are technological devices the cognitive level of the learner should be considered (do they have the muscle control to push or swipe? While you are narrating try to make eye contact with the child, build upon shared interests, have an animated facial expression, and make learning fun.
This resource could also be used with adults who need support in this important life skill. Having sensory time with your child will help them cope with daily life and create a bond between the two of you.
Just as important, images are a universal means of communication and they are just as understandable by strangers or young peers as by parents or therapists. You can create your own PECS by purchasing a three ring binder, paper, glue, and three ring binder plastic sleeves. The third set of cards have a fill in the blank sentence for the kids who need more of a writing challenge.
You move to your space, place the correct number of clothespins on to your bug, and then draw a card to write (or use the board with letters on it). For a child with Autism presenting with significant behaviors and no consistent means to communicate, that may not be enough therapy. For sensory avoidant children grade the activity by first placing toys on the surface, over time as the child gets more comfortable with the textures start hiding the toys in the medium. If your child is currently receiving speech therapy and experiencing success and making great progress, I highly suggest encouraging collaboration between the ABA team and the SLP. Its best to begin teaching signs with simple, clear mands that are highly preferred by the child ("book", "chips", "juice", etc), also be sure to avoid teaching signs that are very topographically similar when first starting out.
I am a brand new ABA and soon to graduate with a dual bachelor's degree in elementary and special education.
