The NAACP's headquarters is in Baltimore, with additional regional offices in California, New York, Michigan, Colorado, Georgia, Texas and Maryland.[6] Each regional office is responsible for coordinating the efforts of state conferences in the states included in that region. In 1905, a group of thirty-two prominent African-American leaders met to discuss the challenges facing people of color and possible strategies and solutions. The Race Riot of 1908 in Abraham Lincoln's hometown of Springfield, Illinois, had highlighted the urgent need for an effective civil rights organization in the U.S.
On May 30, 1909, the Niagara Movement conference took place at New York City's Henry Street Settlement House, from which an organization of more than 40 individuals emerged, calling itself the National Negro Committee. The conference resulted in a more influential and diverse organization, where the leadership was predominantly white and heavily Jewish American. According to Pbs.org "Over the years Jews have also expressed empathy (capability to share and understand another's emotion and feelings) with the plight of Blacks.
As a member of the Princeton chapter of the NAACP, Albert Einstein corresponded with Du Bois, and in 1946 Einstein called racism "America's worst disease".[21][22] Du Bois continued to play a pivotal role in the organization and served as editor of the association's magazine, The Crisis, which had a circulation of more than 30,000. An African American drinks out of a segregated water cooler designated for "colored" patrons in 1939 at a streetcar terminal in Oklahoma City. In its early years, the NAACP concentrated on using the courts to overturn the Jim Crow statutes that legalized racial segregation. The NAACP began to lead lawsuits targeting disfranchisement and racial segregation early in its history. In 1916, when the NAACP was just seven years old, chairman Joel Spingarn invited James Weldon Johnson to serve as field secretary. The NAACP devoted much of its energy during the interwar years to fighting the lynching of blacks throughout the United States by working for legislation, lobbying and educating the public.
The NAACP also spent more than a decade seeking federal legislation against lynching, but Southern white Democrats voted as a block against it or used the filibuster in the Senate to block passage.
In alliance with the American Federation of Labor, the NAACP led the successful fight to prevent the nomination of John Johnston Parker to the Supreme Court, based on his support for denying the vote to blacks and his anti-labor rulings. The organization also brought litigation to challenge the "white primary" system in the South. The board of directors of the NAACP created the Legal Defense Fund in 1939 specifically for tax purposes. With the rise of private corporate litigators like the NAACP to bear the expense, civil suits became the pattern in modern civil rights litigation. The NAACP's Baltimore chapter, under president Lillie Mae Carroll Jackson, challenged segregation in Maryland state professional schools by supporting the 1935 Murray v.

The campaign for desegregation culminated in a unanimous 1954 Supreme Court decision in Brown v. The State of Alabama responded by effectively barring the NAACP from operating within its borders because of its refusal to divulge a list of its members.
New organizations such as the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) rose up with different approaches to activism. The NAACP continued to use the Supreme Court's decision in Brown to press for desegregation of schools and public facilities throughout the country.
By the mid-1960s, the NAACP had regained some of its preeminence in the Civil Rights Movement by pressing for civil rights legislation.
In 1993 the NAACP's Board of Directors narrowly selected Reverend Benjamin Chavis over Reverend Jesse Jackson to fill the position of Executive Director. In 1996 Congressman Kweisi Mfume, a Democratic Congressman from Maryland and former head of the Congressional Black Caucus, was named the organization's president.
In the second half of the 1990s, the organization restored its finances, permitting the NAACP National Voter Fund to launch a major get-out-the-vote offensive in the 2000 U.S. During the 2000 Presidential election, Lee Alcorn, president of the Dallas NAACP branch, criticized Al Gore's selection of Senator Joe Lieberman for his Vice-Presidential candidate because Lieberman was Jewish. Alcorn, who had been suspended three times in the previous five years for misconduct, subsequently resigned from the NAACP and started his own organization called the Coalition for the Advancement of Civil Rights.
Alcorn's remarks were also condemned by the Reverend Jesse Jackson, Jewish groups and George W. The Internal Revenue Service informed the NAACP in October 2004 that it was investigating its tax-exempt status based on Julian Bond's speech at its 2004 Convention in which he criticized President George W.
As the American LGBT rights movement gained steam after the Stonewall riots of 1969, the NAACP became increasingly affected by the movement to suppress or deny rights to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. This aspect of the NAACP came into existence in 1936 and now is made of over 600 groups and totaling over 30,000 individuals. In 2003, NAACP President and CEO, Kweisi Mfume, appointed Brandon Neal, the National Youth and College Division Director.[46] Currently, Stefanie L. COLLEGE STATION — The first shipment of coffee plantlets from World Coffee Research to test farms in 19 coffee-producing countries will go out before the end of summer, said researchers involved in the new International Multi-Location Variety Trial.
This map shows the locations in coffee-producing regions of the world which have been identified for the International Multi-Location Variety trial of coffee varieties to be conducted by scientists and others working on conjunction with World Coffee Research. World Coffee Research is a non-profit, collaborative research and development program established to help grow, protect and enhance supplies of quality coffee, plus improve producers’ livelihoods. Schilling said he believes the variety trial will be key to the future success of the global coffee industry.
He said selecting varieties for coffee farming is arguably the most important producer decision coffee producers will make, and they should select varieties using knowledge from all available sources.
Schilling said the project is designed to allow testing of coffee varieties in countries where they have never been tried. He said the use of several “extreme climate environments” in this global trial will allow the researchers to see how varieties perform under climates predicted for 30 and 50 years into the future. For the international variety trial, plantlets are grown using an embryo-rescue technique in order to reduce the risk of contamination. He said one of the problems in preparing for these tests is the risk of spreading coffee diseases to countries where they are not present. The process meant more seeds were successfully germinated and without contamination issues, he explained. Special shipping boxes and procedures have been developed for the shipments, which are timed to match the best growing period for receiving countries, and shipping live plantlets is possible, said researchers. Trial participants said so far more than 30 of the best coffee varieties have been shipped from 11 countries to AgriStarts, a laboratory in Florida where the individual embryo was extracted from each seed. It includes extreme stressing conditions such as high temperatures and long dry periods that mimic the changing climate coffee growers are seeing in coffee-producing countries around the world.
To prevent this, researchers used an embryo-rescue technique to develop the plantlets under controlled conditions that greatly reduce disease risk.
Seedlings developed in the extracted embryo process are generally free of contamination and can be shipped in jars without risk of disease to the receiving countries.

It is little wonder this impressive initiative has attracted ambassadors such as Bill Clinton, Donald Trump, George W Bush, sports stars, actors and musicians such as Whoopi Goldberg and Garth Brooks. This he did.I was fitted with Phonak Audeo Q70 312T which incidentally I had to pay for up front.
Church if I sit in middle aisle a few seats from the front I have no problem. But I can now hear what is going on around me and it is wonderful.
The hearing aids are so easy to wear they are the same colour as my hair and no one can see them.
This has been great for my confidence. When I tell people that I am wearing them they have to ask me to show them. I do however, manage to live a normal life and can communicate effectively due to the brilliant hearing aid solution I have that picks up sound in my left ear and sends the audio it picks up to my right ear. It is called a Phonak CROS system. The aid in my right ear also compensates for the loss I have in this ear and gives me pretty much normal hearing in stereo. These were an in the ear hearing aid which at the time were good but being completely hidden in the ear canal took a bit of getting used to. However like anything else if you persevere your brain adjusts and they become less noticeable. Battery life was however quite good at about seven days each.Hearing aid technology is advancing all the time and as the Siemens were becoming rather old the electronics were staring to degrade and I was advised that it was time for a new pair. It is incidentally very important to put your hearing aids in a drying container over night to remove any moisture. I went for another hearing test and although my hearing had changed it was only very slight. The advanced electronics is clearly more powerful as I am only getting five days use from each battery but thanks to hearing aid batteries I source for a good price online that’s not a problem.
The Phonak are excellent and there’s a wide range of models to suit all types of hearing loss. Mine even give you a warning tone when the battery is about to expire.Anyone who wears hearing aids knows that they do not give you perfect hearing, the biggest problem being when you in a crowd like in a pub or at a party. I find that if I concentrate on the people in my immediate vicinity I can cope fairly well and it helps if I have a wall behind me.
My hearing had reduced by about 40% in both ears, but at the time the NHS audiologist recommended the fitting of one aid only.I lived with this arrangement for the next 5 years, not really wearing the aid full time but only using it when I felt a real need especially when viewing television in the evening. So I was not using it all day long. From about November 2013 I started to wear the NHS aid more regularly but soon became disappointed with its performance.
Suffice to say that I purchased a pair of Phonak Audeo S Smart IX CRT aids.Although I have only been using them for about two months I have already come to realize just how much sound I had been missing out on, on a daily basis. Furthermore, I have not had one single comment from friends or neighbours regarding my wearing of hearing aids. The hearing aids themselves are quite small and inconspicuous when sitting just behind the ear. I was surprised how few people noticed my hearing aids compared to my last hearing aids which where in the canal versions. I suppose this was due to my ears looking blocked when wearing in the canals. The Hearing Aids initially gave a tinny sound which my audiologist claimed to be due to my ears not being used to hearing certain frequencies. This was irritating but was thankfully solved upon retuning during my 2-week check-up at the audiologist. Whilst driving in my car on the motorway or in loud background sound environments the hearing aids really shine. Speech is crisp and clear with other passengers and the drone of the background noise is much reduced.I work in a busy and demanding environment where hearing has to be impeccable. Although I notice some niggles with sound from the hearing aids from time to time, removing them makes me realise how good they actually are. Upon removal it feels like I’ve put ear plugs on!The duo phone feature is quite fiddly to use, and it is not easy to get the phone speaker in the right position for a long period of time. It may be better to get the ComPilot if you wish to use the Bluetooth capability of your mobile phone but as I do not have one, I cannot vouch for it.I would recommend that you keep a diary when trialling your hearing aids so you can give your audiologist as much information as possible to help retuning them to suit your needs. Telephone conversations have also been a problem with certain accents and when the caller was speaking fairly quietly.
This has been the case since about my thirties.I am now a fit, active and well 68 but my poor hearing has further deteriorated over the years with age. I was told at the time that they were the best available digital aids and that they would greatly enhance hearing in noisy situations.
I also purchased a remote control which was set up with three programs for 1) background noise, 2) outdoors (I am a keen golfer) and 3) “zoom control” to focus on sound from front, behind, left or right as manually selected using the remote. It was a fairly expensive item (?200 I think) which ultimately proved to be of relatively small benefit and I rarely carry it.I get great benefit from the aids in reasonably quiet situations and one-on-one encounters. However, the minute I turn on the radio or someone speaks to me, the volume goes back up and the unwanted noises interfere with my ability to hear the radio or person speaking.
The background noise reduction in my opinion is very limited.I also purchased an iCom unit for Bluetooth connectivity. The aids shut off most other outside noise in Bluetooth mode which is great using the mobile in noisy environments. However, I also tried it with the TV and found that of small benefit, no better (if not worse) than using my headphones. The iCom is definitely worth the investment. When using a conventional telephone, or even my mobile without the iCon, the phone’s single speaker is “piped” into both aids and outside noise greatly reduced which is a great help. The headphones work great with the aids and shut off other noises as though in Bluetooth mode as well.Overall, I am happy with the aids for general use but disappointed in their ability to assist me in noisy environments. Once these aids were adjusted to suit my lifestyle, after initial purchase period, I have not had them adjusted since. They cope marvellously in social situations – where I mix with many different accents and noise levels. After trying various remedies from my GP to try and improve the situation I decided to buy some private digital hearing aids so I made an appointment there and then and have never looked back!I now have a Phonak Audeo Smart digital hearing aids (both ears) and it is brilliant! I can now get involved in conversations without the embarrassment of asking people to repeat all the time.
