A series with two protagonists, a male superintendent with a female sergeant at Scotland Yard. Jean MacDonald used to work in trade book publishing in New York City before moving to Portland, Oregon, where she does marketing for a Macintosh software company and blogs as The Favorite Aunt. Apparently this week is Mystery Series Week, so we thought we would celebrate by talking about our favorite children’s mystery series.
I loved the Nancy Drew series and spent most of my childhood thinking every old house had a secret passageway and every old desk had a hidden compartment (of course Scooby-Doo is partly to blame for this too). Cyclocross started in Europe more than one hundred years ago when cyclist were looking for a way to stay fit in winter.
Cyclocross requires the power of a sprinter, the speed and endurance of a time trialist, the bike-handling skills of a mountain biker and the tactics of a road racer.
It is not surprising that cyclocross has become the fastest growing part of the sport of cycling in the U.S. Events foster a festive atmosphere and encourage everyone to have fun while racing as hard as possible.

He's a former military with an anti-authoritarian streak that gets him into regular trouble with the higher-ups. At Scotland Yard, he works closely with Sergeant Havers, a woman of the working class with quite a chip on her shoulder. Rutledge is a Scotland Yard detective who served at the front and came back psychologically damaged. She's been reading mysteries since her parents signed her up for The Happy Hollisters Book Club.
I thought it was so cool that he helped his Dad solve real police cases, and also helped his friends whenever something happened to them. I can still remember when I found out there was more than just the first book of the series at the local library – I tore through them all and searched high and low for any new ones that had come out. Like James, Rendell is a major literary talent who's won every mystery award and a peerage as well. He's got no family, but has a tight-knit circle of quirky friends and neighbors who follow him through thick and thin, often trying to "help".

Instead of a sergeant sidekick, Rutledge has Hamish, a dead Scottish soldier who served with him in France who nevertheless haunts Rutledge night and day. My favorite part was how when Encyclopedia faced a real tough case he would think about it right before going to bed, and then wake up knowing the answer. James' nuanced literary style and well-plotted stories have earned her all of the top mystery awards, and a life peerage. His Number 2, Sergeant Lewis, the family man who hates working overtime, seems plodding by comparison, but the two balance one another. There were written for a slightly older audience than Stine’s other scary series, Goosebumps.
Rutledge is out of favor with his superior, and is constantly being sent on cases all over the UK.
