I still call them books on tape, even though I rarely check them out that way in the library anymore. But whatever you call them, these audio books can be helpful, because you can listen while you drive, exercise, or clean your home for example. Once you listen to an audio book you will soon find out the talent of the person reading it, or lack thereof, will dramatically impact how much you enjoy the book.
Basically, to have a great audio book you need both a well written book, and also need a talented narrator of the written word to make it come alive.
The man is quite talented, and keeps my whole family, including my husband and children, entertained on long car rides to see family, since he uses a different voice for each character and another for the narrated parts. I obviously haven't listened to every book out there to know all the best books on tape, so I want your help by sharing the ones you really have enjoyed too. Have you listed to an audio book, podcast, mp3 download, book on tape or CD, or anything like that and thought it was really helpful or informative for you in your role as a home manager, and would recommend that others listen to it too?If so, share your audio book recommendation with us here and explain why you would recommend it. They have always scared him in the past—the Rangers, with their dark cloaksand shadowy ways. Percy Jackson and the Olympians is a favorite of my oldest boys.  They have read the books and seen all of the movies and so naturally the books on tape would be a great addition to our library. After getting expelled from yet another school for yet another clash with mythological monsters only he can see, twelve-year-old Percy Jackson is taken to Camp Half-Blood, where he finally learns the truth about his unique abilities: He is a demigod, half human, half immortal.
Old Yeller is a classic book about a boy and his dog.  I think it was the first book that I remember crying during when I was a kid. Strong and courageous, Old Yeller proved that he could protect Travis’s family from any sort of danger.
After James Henry Trotter’s parents are tragically eaten by a rhinoceros, he goes to live with his two horrible aunts, Spiker and Sponge.
If there is one series that my boys will read time and time again it is the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series.  My boys find it hilarious . It’s a new school year, and Greg Heffley finds himself thrust into middle school, where undersized weaklings share the hallways with kids who are taller, meaner, and already shaving. Kendra and her brother, Seth, have no idea that their grandfather is the current caretaker of Fablehaven. The Call of the Wild is a classic book about a dog and life around the time of the Gold Rush. Perhaps Stevenson’s best-known work, this adventure novel set in the eighteenth century is inspired by the actual exploits of pirate Captain Kidd and the search for his buried treasure. Holes is another book that your entire family will enjoy.  Once you have read the book, make sure to watch the movie as a family.  We love it!
This winner of the Newbery Medal and the National Book Award features Stanley Yelnats, a kid who is under a curse. This is the first post of our Summer Survival for Moms of Boys week of ideas for Traveling with boys.  Be sure to check out all of the other posts in our series and follow along on Pinterest where a new pin will be added each day throughout the remainder of the summer. Amanda Formaro is a Midwest mother of four who has been creating crafts for kids for over 20 years.

Well, I love supporting other moms and I love arts and crafts so I couldn’t wait to get my hands on these books. In Rubber Band Mania, Amanda takes through more than 40 projects that defy the simple bracelet and ring rubber band crafts.
In Duct Tape Mania, Amanda once again brings you over 40 projects, games, and activities using duct tape.
One lucky reader will have a chance to win Rubber Band and Duct Tape Mania to add to their library! Fans of Sex in the City will get a kick out of fictional writer Pandy Wallis who writes highly successful novels that get turned into mega blockbuster movies. If you haven’t read one of Elin Hilderbrand’s idyllic novels set on Nantucket Island, this is a good one to start with. Considered one of Austen’s first completed novels but not published till after her death, this novel follows seventeen-year-old Gothic novel fan Catherine Morland and her family friends as they travel to Bath.
Follow the competitive relationship of Theodore Roosevelt’s daughter Alice and her first cousin Eleanor through the years. A drought has plagued modern-day Britain for three years, but for some reason it rains on Ruth Ardingly’s farm.
Share what you think are the best books on tape and best audio books out there, and I'll tell you my opinions too. Rarely should the authors themselves read their own books, because many of them while talented at writing stink at reading in a way that is not completely boring, incomprehensible or worse. To start, even though I haven't written a whole review yet, I would suggest any of the Harry Potter books, read to you by Jim Dale. That is where I borrow most of the ones I have listened to, so if you don't want to buy them yourself check out the selection they have that you can borrow for free.
The villagers believe the Rangers practice magic that makes them invisible to ordinary people. Even more stunning: His father is the Greek god Poseidon, ruler of the sea, making Percy one of the most powerful demigods alive. But he sure was clever, and a smart dog could be a big help on the wild Texas frontier, especially with Papa away on a long cattle drive up to Abilene. Life there is no fun, until James accidentally drops some magic crystals by the old peach tree and strange things start to happen. The hazards of growing up before you’re ready are uniquely revealed through words and drawings as Greg records them in his diary. Inside the gated woods, ancient laws keep relative order among the greedy trolls, mischievous satyrs, plotting witches, spiteful imps, and jealous fairies. A curse that began with his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather and has since followed generations of Yelnats. Personally, I’m a huge fan of 39 Clues too for kids as it mixing great adventure with some history.
We love rubber band bracelets, and have been wanting to try duct tape art, so these are both great!

Meredith Martin Delinn’s husband cheated rich investors out of billions of dollars and has left her friend penniless.
But everything changes when Harry is summoned to attend an infamous school for wizards, and he begins to discover some clues about his illustrious birthright. And now 15-year-old Will, always small for his age, has been chosen as a Ranger’s apprentice. The peach at the top of the tree begins to grow, and before long it’s as big as a house.
But when the rules get broken, powerful forces are unleashed, and Kendra and her brother face the greatest challenge of their lives. From the moment young Jim Hawkins meets the blind pirate Pew at the Admiral Benbow Inn to the spirited battle for hidden treasure on a tropical island, the novel spawns unforgettable scenes and characters that have thrilled young and old for more than a century. I love that I can just grab a bunch of rubber bands out of my kitchen drawer and have something to do with my boys. From the surprising way he is greeted by a lovable giant, to the unique curriculum and colorful faculty at his unusual school, Harry finds himself drawn deep inside a mystical world he never knew existed and closer to his own noble destiny. All too soon, a cryptic prophecy from the Oracle sends Percy on his first quest, a mission to the Underworld to prevent a war among the gods of Olympus. Inside, James meets a bunch of oversized friends—Grasshopper, Centipede, Ladybug, and more. But the Gold Rush in the Klondike has produced an enormous demand for sled dogs so, when a Gardner at the ranch needs to pay a gambling debt, stealing and selling Buck is a quick way to do it. Amanda loves the creative process and trying new things, and especially likes making something from nothing. I also like that this book features many activities to do with all those tiny rubber bands that all the kids seem to have around. Highly trained in the skills of battle and surveillance, they fight the battles before the battles reach the people.
Buck manages to escape this life of abuse and learns to love a new master more than his own life. Stanley tries to dig up the truth in this inventive and darkly humorous tale of crime and punishment—and redemption.
He gradually discovers the skills of his forbears and finds his home in the primordial forest – eventually Buck cannot resist the call of the wild. The exiled Morgarath, Lord of the Mountains of Rain and Night, is gathering his forces for an attack on the kingdom.
