Catch up on the latest news on the Legion Military Skills Conversion Program and related programs here.
The Honourable Pierre Poilievre, Minister of Employment and Social Development, along with Dan Albas, Member of Parliament for Okanagan-Coquihalla, came to BCIT to announce their support to expand the Legion Military Skills Conversion Program nationally. Alex was in the very first cohort that piloted our program and proved to be very successful in his studies at BCIT. Staff of the Legion Military Skills Conversion program, Justine Arsenault and Fred Mandl, were given the opportunity to participate in EXECUTREK, which brings together civilian employers and gives them a chance to witness reservists in action.
Two legion program students walked across the convocation stage today to receive their Bachelor of Business Administration degree.
The Legion Military Skills Conversion program was invited by colleagues at the University of Washington and representatives from the J9 group at the Washington National Guard to learn more about the LingFit program and to learn more about the educational and transitional needs of their troops. The Canadian Forces Liaison Council (CFLC) today presented awards recognizing the support given by Metro Vancouver businesses and educational institutions to Canadian Forces (CF) Reserve personnel. Help us spread the word about our program by downloading our brochure [PDF] and emailing it to others. In an article titled, “The Queen of Less,” David Ebner writes that, “The [BEST] program taught her how to create a business plan and schooled her in everything from market research and marketing strategy to cash flow projections and working capital requirements.” Anna is quoted as saying, “Everyone at BCIT had something valuable to tell you.
I will be around BCIT for a bit because I am helping with the Canadian Undergraduate Computer Science Conference.
BURNABY, BC The British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) and United Way of the Lower Mainland are pleased to announce an innovative partnership that will award participants in the United Way’s Campaign Associate Program academic credit for hours worked, volunteer time and training. Every year, United Way recruits and trains 40 individuals for its Campaign Associate Program.
Key to the Campaign Associate Program is a six-day intensive training program that covers fundraising essentials such as collaboration and negotiation skills, campaign management, and public speaking.

Now, thanks to a new partnership, Campaign Associates will receive BCIT credits for their training. After comparing training hours and learning outcomes from the United Way Campaign Associate Program to BCIT School of Business course outcomes, BCIT found equivalencies that could be translated into course credit.
Completion of United Way’s Campaign Associate program provides nine credits towards an Associate Certificate of Fundraising Management or three credits towards an Associate Certificate of Non-Profit Management or an Associate Certificate in Event Planning.
This investment will help to evaluate the skills and expertise of Canadian military members to fast track their path to a civilian career. In 2010 Alex was given advanced placement in the Business Management Diploma (formerly Post-Diploma) in recognition of his military service. This event is hosted by the Canadian Forces Liaison Council (CFLC) who is a group of business and educational leaders that volunteer their time to promote the training needs of the Primary Reserve force to civilian employers.
Kevin Wainwright and Natalie Condrashoff presented the program to the members of the Veteran's Affairs Senate Subcommittee on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Ontario.
The Honour House Skills Conversion program was also joined by three graduating Human Resource Management diploma students who are doing their directed studies project on the World of Work Inventory (WOWI) career assessment test. BCIT Associate Certificates are typically earned part time, allowing students to complete a credential at their own pace. We are leaders in our field developing partnerships, tracking progress, and bringing the right people together to initiate change. This program will be expanded to other locations across Canada including the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (Edmonton), Fanshawe College (London), triOS College (locations across Southern Ontario), and Memorial University (St. Thanks to our new support from The Personnel Department, CF members going through our program will gain the skills and tools necessary to put them on the right track to a successful career. The LMSCP staff, along with civilian employers, were brought to the Chilcotin training area to watch reservists from 39 Canadian Brigade Group during Exercise Cougar Defender 2013.

Michael Woolley both started at BCIT in September 2010 after receiving advanced placement in the Business Management Post Diploma program in recognition of their military experience.
Sponsorship money will also be used towards providing scholarships and bursaries for current and former military members attending BCIT through the program. Associates help raise funds to support programs and initiatives that help children, families and seniors, while gaining valuable skills and experience. UWLM funds 150 agencies throughout the Lower Mainland to deliver more than 450 programs and services.
We are very proud to see all the hard work and dedication Alex has put towards each of his programs at BCIT. Hopefully Roy enjoys the next few summer months because he will be right back at it again when he starts the Bachelor of Business Administration full time in the fall. In June 2011 they graduated with their diplomas and high enough GPA's to enter into the Bachelor of Business Administration program in September 2011. The only post-secondary institution asked to speak before the subcommittee, the program was congratulated on the work it has done to support the Canadian Forces and Senator Dallaire reported that he was "pumped up" by the information that he heard. After two very grueling, but rewarding, years at BCIT, we wish both Michael and Kevin the best in their future careers.
