The steel platform, understood to be around 50kg lighter than the current Corsa’s underpinnings thanks to weight-saving features including tailored blanks, has been designed by GM’s fast-expanding Korean arm.

Prototypes of Mercedes-Benz’s all-new C63 AMG have shed much of their disguise to reveal a aggressive styling and aconfident stance. Details remain under wraps, but AMG sources suggest that the new V8 develops between 480bhp and 580bhp, depending on the level of tune. The unit earmarked for the new C63 will be at the lower end of the scale but above the 451bhp of the naturally aspirated 6.2-litre V8 used by the current C63.
Channelling the drive on the new car is an updated version of AMG’s seven-speed Speedshift automatic gearbox, with new software mapping and fuel-saving features such as brake energy recuperation, automatic stop-start and a new coasting function. Despite strong sales of recent four-wheel-drive models, AMG boss Tobias Moers denied that it is planned for the new C63.
The car will have standard traction-enhancing measures such as an electronic locking differential and torque vectoring. As a result, the new C63 promises to eclipse the straight-line performance of its predecessor, which hits 62mph in a claimed 4.5sec on the way to a top speed limited to 155mph. Unfortunately, where the 208 GTI had a feisty, hot hatch dynamic to raise it above the standard model’s faults, the 2008 is (understandably) more deeply mired in them. The hatchback’s fragmented interior has been transferred wholesale, and while Peugeot claims that the relative position of dash and driver has not changed, the result hardly looks better now you appear to tower above it. Behind the front seats there’s an acceptable amount of space for adults, although Peugeot doesn’t seem to have taken much advantage of the elevated roofline that juts so conspicuously from the 2008’s brow. The extra height is obviously noticeable, as is an unexpected amount of supplementary heft on the steering. Peugeot has suggested that the price walk up from an equivalent 208 should be around ?800 (the lineup is expected to start at ?12,995), a premium reasonable enough to suggest that it will find buyers easily enough on the forecourt. With smooth curves and a rugged stance, the Mokka is refined, advanced and capable in any environment.
Handily compact and finely finished and detailed – as you would expect from contemporary Audi – the Q3 makes a strong on-paper case for itself. The new supermini, scheduled to go into production in April 2014, will also feature a range of efficient new engines and could weigh less than a tonne in entry-level form as part of a weight-saving campaign. The current Corsa’s looks have been a hit, and switching to a more dramatic and rakish style, while maintaining the current ‘grown-up’ dynamics, could prove to be a successful formula in evolving the car and maintaining its success. It has already been seen beneath the latest Chevrolet Aveo and will also be used for Vauxhall’s upcoming Mokka compact SUV. But insiders have confirmed that much of the engineering for the next Corsa will take place in Germany to ensure it is suited to European tastes. This engine is being developed as part of Vauxhall’s new Mid-Size Diesel family and is targeting more power and greater refinement than equivalent Volkswagen and Ford engines.
Opel-Vauxhall also has a new seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic gearbox in development, but it is not yet clear whether it will be offered on the Corsa. The new performance saloon will hit the UK early next year after a public debut at the LA motor show in November. It will feature a classy, roomier interior and more advanced features than ever before, including new state-of-the-art stereo and camera-assisted safety functions and a full suite of connectivity options. Set to be revealed in the Mercedes GT AMG, the aluminium-block unit shares vital architectural elements with the 2.0-litre, four-cylinder engine used in the A45, CLA45 and GLA45. The adoption of forced induction also promises to lift peak torque well beyond 442lb ft at far lower revs than the 5000rpm of today’s C63. Its new aluminium-intensive platform structure is claimed to help reduce its weight to below the 1655kg of today’s model to provide it with an improved power-to-weight ratio. Along with the saloon pictured above, estate, coupe and cabriolet variants will go on sale by the end of 2016. But no, "excellent ergonomics" and "strong build quality" are trotted out for the umpteenth time - the same old flimflam describing the car's least quantifiable features. Audi has the Q5, BMW has the X3, Range Rover has the Evoque and now Lexus has this, the NX.
