In my opinion, the range of colors for the Chevy Volt is somewhat limited and pretty boring with the only color that stands out (in my opinion) being Crystal Red.
What’s more, a number of Volt owners have noticed that the front and rear bumper panels do not match the rest of the body paint.
This is actually a fairly common problem with many car manufacturers and it’s a mistake that is easy for quality control to miss. These are some threads found right here at the GM-Volt forum from users who have experienced color issues.
A common misconception is that it is impossible to get an exact match with colors on the fascia compared to the body – or just between body panels, but this is simply not the case. This entry was posted on Thursday, February 21st, 2013 at 5:55 am and is filed under General. I find you photos a tad disturbing, It looks like Viridian Joule on a Silver Car, surely the rest of the car is not Viridian Joule?
I believe it is to do with surface finish & with metallic how they are layed down including the base. Even raw plastics are a problem – spectrophotometers they measure the same – put them through the injection dies where they undergo different stress during injection molding and wala now 2 parts are now different color same light blue color batch of material! My Steel bodies paint job isn’t perfect either as the tricoat is difficult to apply, I have uniform Ghosts both hinge sides on the rear doors I suspect how the factory robots lay the paints down. Hence I normally buy plain colored cars, but this time I went for exotic so expect these issues to some extent. I own a black ’12 Volt, and there is zero color variation, which would be expected with a black car.
I owned a ’08 Volvo C30 prior to the Volt, and it had an electric silver metallic paint color. I see that your opinion is very weak in chromatic expertise, because the Volt’s Blue Topaz Metallic is a very beautiful color when seen under direct sunlight, and there are several Volt owners that confirm my comment. But seeing the photos above proves that GM has a problem in Quality Control because the color difference you described are easily seen. The fascia colors did not exactly match the body colors on my 2011 Crystal Red, but were very, very close. My wife hit a deer with the car last October, and it took the body shop two attempts to get the paint to match. I wonder if it has something to do with additives that are used when painting flexible surfaces like the fascia. This is not really a quality control problem, but rather a feature of Viridian due to its chemistry.
Viridian is a blue-green pigment, a hydrated chromium(III) oxide, of medium saturation and relatively dark in value. Chromium(III) oxide turns brown when heated, but reverts to its dark green color when cooled. I have a white Volt where, as one would expect, the paint color matches perfectly between the materials.
They may meet the spec – but they eye can see things – light effects- the silly machine cannot. When I was at the Mercedes plant in Alabama, I talked with one of their final assembly experts.

That makes a lot of sense, and explains why all the huge paint mismatch pictures are Viridian Joule. If the color might change when the body heats up on particular paints, how could the author recognize the full story without even owning a Volt?
With metallic paint (almost all of them) the way the metallic lays down can greatly affect the match.
Car companies could just do what Toyota did on their Fun Vii concept and cover the whole thing with flexible OLED’s. I’m with kdawg on this one, black was my only pick and its perfect at any angle and light. Daniel Harris: I’m curious – wouldn’t taking a spectrophotometer reading after everything is complete help to nail down the exact color?
Never much cared for Viridian Joule anyways – too close to silver makes it rather redundant in my book. That being said, with the asking price for a new Volt being around $40,000 for a new car, I expect the paint job to be uniform with all of the body panels matching; I don’t think this is unreasonable to expect, even from even a Ford Focus! Now these aren’t glaring issues and many users go weeks or months before they realize a difference (or don’t notice at all), but I know I’d be upset to notice a flaw after spending my hard earned money. How we perceive color depends on a host of different factors; the light source, material, gloss, and even our gender or mood can influence how one person sees color over another. Granted it is more difficult, but tools like spectrophotometers that measure color and can give an exact, and unbiased, reading of color. And the most common vehicle color is White because it is the most visible on the road under most normal conditions.
This worries me because that failure will lower the value of the Volt, and affect GM’s image.
Future sales depends on keeping your quality during assembly and avoid bad press due to this issue. You had to be at the right angle and in the right lighting conditions to see the difference.
In the first attempt, the difference was similar to the Viridian Joule featured in this article. He is right that car buffs like myself cringe at any mis-match whether a touch-up or especially a new car.

We know there are many Volt haters out there, so could it be this was intentionally done with software like Paint Shop? Different painters and differences in air pressure can make the exact same gallon appear very mismatched. 3M matte & carbon fiber metro wraps for Miami, West Palm Beach, & Fort Lauderdale, Florida. For the ones who really want to make a statement.Chrome is easily the rarest finish on cars. Heck, I haven’t even been in one, and this is exactly why I won’t be commenting on the performance or interior design of the Volt.
The problem arises from the fascia fender panels being made from a different material, and possibly where the parts were manufactured. While I don’t know for sure, I suspect that GM manufactures the plastic fenders in a unique area, or might even have a third party manufacture them, which accounts for the color difference. While the average paint shop typically won’t have these tools handy, a multi-billion dollar car manufacturer certainly does. This reminds me of the chef that cooked the best meal but didn’t present the meal in an attractive way, so no one wanted to eat it.
Specifically, it is a dark shade of spring green, the color between green and cyan on the color wheel, or, in paint, a tertiary blue–green color. Matte black is very popular with the custom car scene, and often used when 'murdering-out' a vehicle.
The fact that these cars are on the market leads me to believe that GM allows for slight variances in color. Not only can you breathe new life into the appearance of your car, but you can maintain its residual value too. I think it offers sharper lines to the typical “town-car” styling, but there are some major issues that GM needs to address when it comes to the exterior paint of the Volt – especially if the price point is trying to compete with BMW or Mercedes-Benz. While this may not be a deal breaker, it’s an important issue to be aware of if you’re planning on purchasing a Volt.
I still have trouble opening Christmas gifts and trying to determine if the pants are dark-navy or black. You can’t go off of color samples or examples in pamphlets for true color, so always try to see the car in person so you know you’ll be happy with the color choice.
