The Suzuki Splash is powered by the proven four-cylinder 1.2-litre engine found in the entry-level Swift which offers 63 kW of power and 113 Nm of torque.
Acceleration is far from blistering, but for a car this size, weighing 1090 kg, those power figures are more than enough to go about your daily commute with ease. If you don't fancy the Splash, then the Swift 1.2 GL offers excellent value with a more attractive interior and smoother transmission, all for a few extra pennies.

I spent a week with the range-topping Mirage 1.2 GLS to see if it will stand the test of time in this competitive segment. The Mirage wears these small numbers on its sleeve to deliver a fun and sprightly drive within the confines of the city.
The leather steering wheel with mounted audio controls is tilt adjustable and the front seats are soft and comfortable but don't offer much lateral support. All factors considered, the Mitsubishi Mirage should be an easy car to live with on a daily basis. The Mirage is built with city use in mind and will return excellent fuel economy day-in and day-out which makes it that much more attractive. The model shown at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show featured a 125 kW 1.4-litre turbocharged engine and dual-clutch automatic transmission. The local model lineup is not confirmed yet, but we're hoping South Africa will get the full range. Of all of them, the Suzuki Swift hatchback has proven to be a major success for the brand and Suzuki engineers have reworked a good formula and created yet another small city car, the Splash. The front-end is dominated by a large two-tier grille, which is flanked by oversize headlight clusters and fog lights are fitted as standard on this GL model. I quite like the large windows, which increases visibility and the sense of space in the cabin. Comfortable cloth seats offer sufficient support and bolstering, and the tilt-adjustable steering wheel features mounted audio controls for the entertainment system. A five speed transmission is standard across the Splash range but a 4-speed automatic is also available for the GL model. The dash-mounted gear lever is stubborn through the gear changes and requires some grappling to select the preferred gear.

The engine performs well and returns decent fuel economy and the good ride and handling makes the Splash easy and enjoyable to drive on a daily basis. The Splash though is a solid little runabout and if your budget won't quite reach to the Swift then it's a viable option. The automatic version will set you back R149 900 and the base model Splash manual is priced at R124 900. An optional tiptronic transmission is available in both the hatch and the sedan with the 63kW 1.4-litre engine.

The Corsa Sport strikes a perfect pose with 17-inch Dark Titanium alloy wheels fitted as standard. The Mirage's suspension is softly sprung which translates into a bouncy ride on uneven sections with significant body roll and road noise becoming evident at highway speeds. The Mitsubishi Mirage also delivers a throaty engine note when you floor the gas pedal, which should put a smile on your face. The boot is on the small side, 235-litres, but the 60:40 split rear seats fold down to increase loading capacity. Service intervals are set at 15 000 km, and don't forget about that one year's worth of insurance thrown in for free!
In the GL model, a periscope-style rev-counter is mounted separately on the dashboard which, is meant to look ‘sporty’ but just looks odd instead. The Suzuki Splash is therefore an excellent urban runabout that’s up to the task of niftily navigating busy city roads and highways. If you can look past the cheap switchgear and stubborn transmission, then the Splash is a winner. Weighing only 825 kg, the Mirage is also easily blown around in typically strong Cape winter winds so you better have your wits about you when the weather turns nasty. There will be three trim options (Giulia, Super and Quadrifoglio), two specification packages (Lusso and Sport), 18 different interior colours and 13 body colours. Time and sales will determine this, but is the Splash good enough to take the fight to its competitors? You also have a choice of two gearboxes: an 8-speed Q-Tronic automatic or a 6-speed manual.
