For those of you who are unfamiliar, kettlebells look like cannonballs with a single handle on top. Kettlebells are different to regular weights in that their weight is distributed off-centre, which requires constant activation of your core muscles (abs, back, glutes) to control as well as providing a longer range of motion for the weight to move through.
The only problem I have with kettlebells is when certain trainers go completely ga-ga over them, and think every single exercise has to be done with a kettlebell. At the end of the day, kettlebells are a weight just like a dumbbell or barbell, meaning that they will challenge your body by forcing it to become stronger. While I would prefer that a beginner start out by performing a mix of bodyweight, dumbbell, barbell AND kettlebell exercises, an intensive kettlebell class can serve as a great introduction to weight training.
I would recommend anyone that trains with kettlebells to first learn proper form by either taking a class or booking a session with a trainer who has been specifically certified with kettlebell training.

You can also do a burpee into a deadlift, but I wouldn’t try lifting your arms above your head haha. Well I have to admit I hovered over the word “use”, but I figured there was no use in being overly pessimistic! No, I meant what advantages kettlebells have in comparison with dumbbells for exercises that you can do with either? The first time I used kettlebells was actually last year, when you wrote them into my training program (I think it was the third round?)! They range in weight from 4lbs to 105lbs. Kettlebells have been around since the 1700s, but have increased in popularity in recent times. As they have a thicker handle than dumbbells, kettlebells will also improve your grip strength. You can work your entire body using kettlebells with very minimal space or other equipment.
My favourite kettlebell exercises are swings, goblet squats, single leg deadlifts, walking lunges, one arm snatches, cleans, and farmers walks. Kettlebells are just one tool in the toolbox, and should therefore not be used in isolation. Many of the benefits kettlebells provide can also be obtained through regular weight training; for example, increased muscle mass, improved strength, stronger bones, better posture, and fat loss. They are the exercises key to building muscle, while higher rep kettlebell exercises serve as accessory movements. There are subtle differences between handling a kettlebell versus a dumbbell, and it is easy to fall into habits of bad form. The purpose of a kettlebell swing is to master the hip hinge, so I don’t see how throwing the weight over your head aids that. It’s better to perform a swing with a kettlebell as the distribution of the weight causes the movement to be ballistic, meaning the swing has more momentum. Like I said in my post, the fact that the weight is distributed off-centre means your core is forced to work harder. They took some getting used to, but before I knew it, they were one of the exercises I looked forward to most each week.

I typically do higher rep kettlebell circuits (workout below!) as a more exciting form of cardio. In fact, the first weighted exercise I ask almost all of my clients to do is a goblet squat with a kettlebell. You will also be limited in the weight you can use, which again defeats the purpose of using a heavy weight to stimulate your glutes, which are the strongest muscle in your body.
Good to know that the swing is usually butchered – I’ll wait until someone can show me proper form before I try out that one! I leave my heavy lifting to barbells and dumbbells, and use kettlebells for conditioning and the occasional grip work. The handle also makes the movement a bit safer – you’re less at risk of throwing a dumbbell through a wall! However, I have had a conversation with a very well-respected doctor about this and he thinks the idea is oversimplified.

The results revealed that they had burned similar amount of calories, but the heart rate was higher during the kettlebell workout. This means it develops the cardiovascular system more.
The reason lies in the handles: their thickness challenges your grip, causing your stabilizer muscles to work harder, and the position of its weight makes it difficult to control, especially causing your core to work harder as well.
