Unsupported browserThis site was designed for modern browsers and tested with Internet Explorer version 10 and later. The Track Workout page has a single text entry field for the user to enter a name or ID for their workout. In this two-part series of tutorials, you will learn how to use the above to build a complete PhoneGap application. Let's start development of our app by downloading and including all of the required JavaScript and CSS files. We start by listening for the deviceready event which is fired when PhoneGap has finished loading. In this tutorial, we looked at an overview of the ExerciseTracker app, constructed the Home page, and started work on the Track Workout page.
We started with redesigning app icons and created a whole new visual language that set them up for iOS 7 and beyond. Our explorations spanned highly-stylized iOS 7 line-icons to pushing the envelope with playful graphics.
While the team liked the long-shadow treatment, we were still worried about the longevity of the design. For instance, how do you effectively move a file within a constricted amount of screen space? After fleshing out the interactions and visual language, we documented the details of our decision and design patterns in a comprehensive style guide.
We’ve started using the ZURB deliverables as the foundation for a comprehensive style guide across all of our products — this will be a huge productivity enhancer for the product teams. When the user clicks the Stop Tracking button, we need to stop following their GPS location and save all of the GPS points that were recorded (tracking_data) into the database. PhoneGap provides both browser-based Local Storage and a SQLite database as methods of storing data on the phone. In the ExerciseTracker app, we need to store tracking_data (the array of Position objects). Like all of our event handling in ExerciseTracker, we use the jQuery live() function to listen for the click event.
The Track Info page displays information about an individual workout the user has completed. Chris Veness has written a great explanation on how to calculate the distance between two GPS coordinates. Now that we have a function to calculate the distance between two GPS coordinates, and an array full of GPS coordinates the user recorded, we can sum all of the individual distances between adjacent points to calculate the total distance the user travelled.
Early in January 2013 Misfit Shine made a lot of noise, when they exceeded the original funding goal by almost 8 times. This elegant, petite and overall original activity tracker seemed really promising. My wife and I received our Shines in the mail last week and had a few days to spend intimately with the devices, mainly tracking sleep and fitness activity.
In comparison to packaging of the Apple products, where every tiny detail is thought through, or even Amazon packaging, that is just simple and rugged, Shine falls a little bit shorts on both ends. The box contains a Shine, that is snapped together, a couple of batteries, a funky-shaped device that’s meant for opening the shine cover, and a magnetic clip. Getting started was a bit counter-intuitive, but not a big deal, especially for the early adopters. Shine  has four different accessories that you could purchase: a magnetic clasp, a sports band, a necklace and a leather band. Watch the official Shine video and you will see that connecting the device to your iPhone is incredibly easy. After paying a close attention to the Shine stats for a couple of days, I realized that although perhaps not amazing insightful, the data I was getting was actually incredible good at reminding me (and my wife) to be active. That said, I am not entirely convinced that Shine is making accurate measurements of my calories. Shine is a great device for tracking activity, especially for the folks who are not very active. This is a beautiful product that deserves a beautiful and functional environment around it, which includes impeccable packaging, good FAQs, accessories that don’t break so easily, and an app that showcases the very best in design and user experience.
They mentioned on their site that they account for the normally used calories of your body. It also has two buttons that are useful for testing the app, but they can be removed easily later if desired.
It displays the total distance travelled in kilometers and the total time taken for the workout, and it then plots the route the user travelled on a Google Map.

PhoneGap provides a great Start Page which walks you through setting up the PhoneGap development environment for each of the different mobile platforms. The first is a function which is called every time the phone successfully returns a GPS location, the second is a function which is called when there is a GPS error, and the third is an object of settings. This contains information about the user's GPS position, such as their latitude, longitude, and altitude. In the next tutorial, we will complete the Track Workout page and finish the ExerciseTracker app by allowing the user to view saved workouts plotted on a Google Map.
Check out Envato Studio's servicesBuild anything from social networks to file upload systems. We balanced relevant visual elements of the upcoming release with branded styles — it was vital to giving MobileIron a distinct voice while keeping it in tune with the dramatic iOS 7 update.
It allowed us to revisit how people would use the apps, expanding the functionality of each. Think of it as the playbook for engineers to use during the actual development of the apps.
Looking back at where the suite of apps began, we’re proud to have created a visual language that unifies the apps as a cohesive set. We'll also reset the text input box (in case they want to record another workout straight away) and we'll display a message that we have stopped location tracking. The SQL database is a lot more powerful (due to the fact you can specify table schemas), but comes at the cost of code complexity. On the Home page of ExerciseTracker, you will remember the "Clear Local Storage" and "Load Seed GPS Data" buttons. When they click on a workout, we open the Track Info page which contains detailed information (such as distance travelled, time taken, and route plotted on a Google Map). When the user loads the page, we need to generate an HTML list containing all of the recorded workouts. We will calculate the distance they travelled, the time it took them to complete their workout, and also the route taken on a Google Map. Then, when the Track Info page is loaded, we retrieve that track_id and display the appropriate workout information. We simply subtract the timestamp of the first recorded GPS Position from the last recorded GPS Position to give us the total time taken for the workout in milliseconds.
We start off by setting the intial latitude and longitude that the Google Map will be centered on as the coordinates of the first GPS point. A couple of things about Shine could be better, but nothing that software updates would not fix.
Among its competitors (Nike FuelBand, Fitbit and Jawbone Up), Shine was a marvel, a “precision crafted like jewelry to be worn on any occasion” as they put it. I get an impression they were going for an exquisite feel, but then had to speed up and ended up with a compromise. It was the only activity tracker that really appeal to me due to its simplicity and beauty.
As an Indiegogo supporter, I only got to play with the first two and  the clasp was by far my preferred accessory. All you got to do is to download the app, activate Bluetooth, place the Shine on top of your screen and watch it sync.
Although you may never be able to find the “My Shine” menu option, the screens look pretty and if all you want to do is to track your daily stats, the app works. If you want to track sleep, you can set that up in the “My Shine” menu and a tripple-tap will activate the function.
I first thought that on-device display, in the form of an LED circle, was useless, but overtime I realized that it was great for actively reminding me of how little exercise I do before lunch.
I took the Shine out for a run once, along with my Nike+ watch, and while my watch only recorded about 803 calories burnt after a 50 minute run, my Shine reported a stunning 1,800 calories! Misfits are about 80% there, and I wish them luck and tailwind. I am certainly looking forward to the innovations, which will without a doubt follow this release. Choose the platform you want to develop for and follow the instructions to set up the basic PhoneGap application. The getCurrentPosition() function would be used when you want to get a one-off fix on the user's location (such as saving the location of the user when they take a photo).
Whenever the "success" function is called in ExerciseTracker, we append the latest Position object to the array tracking_data. We may have been designing something for iOS 7, but we had to set MobileIron up for the next version and, perhaps, the one after that.

What started as a stylistic icon treatment evolved into an interface design that was harmonious and conveyed a family of apps. Most of all, we distilled key workflows into intuitive and pragmatic interactions that help teams get stuff done. We’ll work together to get your product or online service designed better and faster than you thought possible. If the "Load Seed GPS Data" button is fired, then we insert some dummy GPS data into the database. Because window.localStorage is just another Javascript object, we can call the length() method on it to find out how many workouts the user has recorded. I would not say this is bad, but having seen beautiful packaging, as a consumer I now come to expect one.
The process, I suppose, was made even more confusing by a diagram printed on the inner cover of the box. Being a designer myself, I really admire the precision with which the metal is carved and the addition of LEDs under the metal plate make it all that more beautiful. After wearing Shine around for a few days, I noticed it does attract some attention, especially when I double-tap the device and it lights up with a gorgeous circle of lights.
Unfortunately either due to defect or the nature of the design, the plastic rim was too easy to rip. The only downside is that you cannot set the device to track multiple activity types on request.
Knowing myself, and how much food I consume during the day, I know for a fact that I need to get at least double the activity in order not to gain weight, but there is now way for Shine to know that and to adjust its measurements.
The Misfits team should have plenty of money left (7.6 million dollars) to keep building great products.
Follow this two-part tutorial series and I'll show you how to build a mobile app that tracks, records, and maps your exercise route using the GPS features on your phone!
We update the text, set a new icon, and call the button('refresh') method, which forces jQuery Mobile to redraw the button.
Our app will use watchPosition() to do this, which regularly polls the GPS feature of the phone and recieves constant updates on the user's location. We started with the smallest step possible: the apps’ icons because MobileIron needed to be in the App store fast.
We placed focus on the addition of “Priority Folders”, by which team leads could distribute the highest priority documents to teammates. In this tutorial, we will finish the Track Workout page and complete the app by creating the History and Track Info pages.
Data is stored using the setItem(key, value) method, and retrieved using the getItem(key) method. We then create the map, specifying that we want the HTML element with the ID map_canvas to hold the map.
Luckily, I still have the sports band, and since Shine only relies on a 3-axis accelerometer, I can also just keep it in my pocked and get the same results. It will only track the one activity that’s selected in the settings, and it will track all your motion in general.
My worry is that people who otherwise should have exercised more, would find validation in Shine and stop short of their goals. For example, the data-role attribute tells jQueryMobile the role of the HTML element and the data-icon attribute specifies what icon will be shown inside the element. We shied away from being too high-brow, settling on clear, chunky icons that represent the function of each app.
Instead of seeing it as a potential obstacle down the road, we turned it into an opportunity.
The user needed to know two things to make a clear move action: the file they’re moving and the context of where it’s going. It acted as a single place for the team to share and sync their most important and current documents. You can see below how the home page is composed of HTML elements with data-role attributes. The shadow style wouldn’t be pure ornamentation — it would be a brand element within the interface of the apps.
We let the design get out of the customer’s way — creating an action that was so intuitive that it didn’t demand attention.
