First of all, a large percentage of the population has some degree of intolerance to the gluten in wheat and some other grains. The introduction of wheat into the human diet has only been in the last couple thousand years, and it has NEVER been in such large quantities in the human diet until the last 80-100 years.
From my experience with many of my clients, when they heed my advice and eliminate wheat from their diet for 2-3 weeks to see if they start to lose weight and feel better, this almost always makes a HUGE difference.
The 2nd example of the worst fattening foods that shocks many people because it is thought to be "healthy" is -- fruit juice. When you only drink the juice of fruits (apple juice and orange juice being 2 of the worst culprits in the western diet), you are not getting the appetite satisfying effect of the fiber in the fruit, and you're left craving more carbs.
If you want the REAL truth on eating strategically for permanent fat loss, read these 5 tips for Losing Body Fat the smart and effective way.
Eric Schlosser in his book “Fast Food Nation” says that the annual health care costs in the United States from obesity is close to $240 billion. Research has also shown that NutraSweet, one of the most popular artificial sweeteners, leads to the same surge of insulin as white carbs (see No 7 food below) –- because of sweetness detectors in the small intestine.
2.  White sugar is full of calories that sabotage healthy eating and prime your palate to crave sweets.
Alcohol increases the release of the hormone cortisol that breaks down muscle and retains fat. Research by the London University College team, suggests that a diet high in processed food increases the risk of depression.
Everyone already know the good foods: fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and quality proteins.
But then there are those so-called “healthy” foods that we think are great for us—or at least not terrible—but are packed the gills with waistline saboteurs. Most people think they’re doing themselves a healthy favor when they opt for “wheat bread” on their deli sandwiches, or pick up a pre-packaged loaf of 7-grain at the supermarket , but the fact remains most mass brands not much better for you than plain old white bread, as they’re made with refined grains, which means you’re not getting the full nutritional benefit of the actual whole grain. A good way to tell whether your wheat bread is really whole is to read labels—if the first flour in the ingredient list is refined (code terms include “bleached” or “unbleached enriched wheat flour”) it’s most defintiely not “whole wheat” or “whole grain—it’s essentially white bread with a brownish tint.
Or “cakes for one” as we like to call them, it’s absurd that muffins are marketed to us as breakfast foods, when they really should be considered decadent desserts.
Homemade muffins can be a different story, as you control the size and what goes into them (check out Pinterest for some good healthy recipes), but most pre-made versions are one-way ticket to calorieville.
In this case, we’re talking about mass-market applesauce that you find near the juice in typical supermarkets, which is loaded with added sugar. If you live near a specialty supermarket like Whole Foods or a health food store, look for unsweetened applesauce, or try to make your own this season. You’ve heard it before: Just because something is called a “salad” does not make it automatically healthy. The trick here is stay away from already-made dishes like Chef’s Salads (which is packed with ham, turkey, eggs, cheese, and, usually a creamy dessing), Cobb salads (blue cheese, egg, bacon, chicken, and occasionally avocado), and anything with fried chicken, crispy strips, or heavy cream-based dressings. Again, all of the above salads can easily be prepped at home, and you can control exactly how much meat (try a slice or two of turkey or half a grilled chicken breast, as opposed to half a pound), cheese (one teaspoon of crumbled cheese, or one to two thin slices chopped), and other ingredients goes into them, which obviously makes them healthier. Restaurants will be happy to make substitutions, and while pre-made grab-and-go salads are occasinoally a necessity, you can usually control the dressing, and weed out some offending ingredients. Much like lemon or lime juice, pure cranberry juice is extremely tart and pretty much undrinkable on its own, so most types found in supermarkets and at restaurants—actually called “cranberry juice cocktail”—are jam-packed with sugar and sweeteners. It’s ironic that we often attribute the word “granola” to healthy types, considering the crunchy snack is anything but. While lots of sushi rolls make a sensible meal—nothing wrong with fresh fish and a little white rice—some types are packed to the gills with fat and calories.
As tasty as they are, standard spicy rolls are made with mayonnaise, Philly rolls are made with salty smoked salmon and cream cheese, and anything with tempura means its deep fried.

And while a California roll isn’t unhealthy, per se, its abundance of avocado and (often) imitation crabmeat aren’t the best choice if you’re already eating spicy rolls, or anything fried. If your body simply cannot tolerate gluten, occasionally indulging in treats made without it isn’t so terrible. We hate to break it to all you juicing fanatics, but sipping green concoctions all day isn’t as healthy as you might think.
As the website Quick and Dirty Tips pointed out, theoretically, we’re getting the nutritional equivalent of at least a dozen servings of fruits and vegetable in every glass of fresh pressed juice, but the problem is that juicing also concentrates the natural sugars in the produce while separating out the the fiber that would normally slow the absorption of sugars. In its most basic form, coffee is pretty harmless, calorically speaking (black coffee clocks in at 5 calories per cup), but it can be hard to chug without adding in a little extras. Yes, this month the New England Journal of Medicine published a report qualfying the effects of certain foods and activities on weight change.
After the big-time starches and carbs, this had to be the most devastating news from this study. This entry was posted in Advice, Uncategorized and tagged hamsterdam, Health, thanks for the treat stupid!.
Instead, read on to see a couple foods that may shock you that they may be packing on the blubber. Full blown celiacs are the most sensitive to it, but what most people don't realize is that the majority of the population was never meant to eat large quantities of wheat.
White Carbs (white rice, pasta, white bread, and starches) are fattening because they are high glycemic index foods. NO amount of processed meat is considered safe to eat, according to the American Institute for Cancer Research. If you are still eating many of the foods listed above, simply start decreasing the quantity until you are in control. After testing and researching every possible healthy therapy on her delicate system she has developed simple, powerful principles which she shares in her recent book Eating Green and Lean, and as host to Care2 groups: Healthy Living Network and Healthy Cooking. Foods like Lean meat, Banana, Chicken, Peanut Butter, Cheese, Whole fat milk etc are packed with high amount of protein, Vitamins & fat.
Many pre-made muffins—even “healthy” kinds like bran—are completely oversized, and clock in at over 350 calories (others can get as high as almost 700 calories and nearly 40 grams of fat!), and they’re packed with refined grains and sodium. If you’re at brunch, and a basket of mini muffins arrive, one won’t hurt since they’re so small, but stop there if you’re ordering other things. In fact, one leading brand’s snack-size cup of has 90 calories and 22 grams of sugar, and the second ingredient is high fructose corn syrup. In fact, an 8-ounce glass of most store-bought cranberry juice has more sugar than a can of soda! Seek out cranberry juice concentrate, which is often sold in very small bottles in the juice aisle.
Most mass-market granola is made with rolled oats, honey, and puffed rice, none of which have any real nutritional value.
Next time you’re out for sushi, choose a mix of rolls that only include fish and vegetables like cucumber, radish, scallion, or carrots, and treat yourself to one “treat roll” like Spicy Tuna. However, it’s key to understand that most aren’t healthier, they’re just made without gluten. If you’ve ever made your own, you’ll know that it literally takes pounds of produce to produce 16 ounces of juice, whcih is why we all think it’s so good for us. That means, if you drink the juice by itself, those sugars will be quickly absorbed into your bloodstream. The thick, creamy, protein-heavy snack first becamse popular in the States in the late 1990s by the brand Fage, but it’s now been co-opted by every yogurt brand under the sun—and lots have been doctored up with artificial junk. Besides your semi-annual trip to the gym, we’ve got some groundbreaking news on the health front.

Yogurt, nature’s way of sneaking extra bacteria into your colon, came up big in this study.
Pinning this article on their common room billboard and referencing it every 15 minutes, it joins others such as Olestra makes you poop out your vitamins in filling your ignorant snacking with guilt.
Yea, I’d add the thinly sliced potato product fried in a heavenly-smelling oil to that group.
However, we were NOT meant to separate the juice from the rest of the fruit and only drink the high calorie sugary mixture and leave behind the fiber and other beneficial components of the fruit. A study found that people who drank two or more diet sodas a day had six times the waistline compared to those who skip the diet cola. Take half the bread off a sandwich, which not only nixes calories and carbs, but also will lessen your refined flour intake. Ask for dressing on the side and dip your fork into it before each bite, as opposed to pouring it on. It’s purely the juice of untouched cranberries, so it’s way too tart to sip on its own, but when a little is poured into water or seltzer, you get the flavor and the many health benefits craberries have to offer.
If you’re low-carbing it, ask for your rolls to be wrapped in cucumber instead of rice, and fill up on starters like miso soup, a little edamame, or a salad.
Check out this handy chart to clock which fruits and veggies pack the most sugar into juices, and avoid replacing all your meals with juice unless you’re doing a strict liquid-only cleanse. Fruit-flavored Greek yogurt is the worst offender, as most contain fake flavors, sweeteners or added sugars. Eating yogurt on a daily basis is a great way to make you associate all creamy white foods with fetid rot, and therefore help you keep the pounds off.
Leave it to those ivory tower liberals at Harvard to take all the fun our of wind out of our Yale sails. Plus, granola is a food that’s hard to digest which can lead to bloating, gas, and other stomach issues. No, this isn’t about the worries over health care spending, or even things that make your tummy urpy. Why yes, it’s Hamsterdam, the official laxative of the innanets, ready to report on the winners and losers. But unlike a lot of fried foods, this is the good fat that you were pretty drunk and your standards were not so high at the time and hey, it had been a while.
You can expect the Belgian mayonnaise industry to be up in fat droopy arms over this report. Shockingly, processed meats fared better, despite the frequent addition of salts and preservatives. Scientists have unlocked the secret to our very (not so) well-being: foods that make us fat.
Eating this on an everyday basis will almost certainly lead to both weight gain and high fives from whomever you choose to share this golden treat with. I poured over the information graphic over and over, and the only thing I came away with was damn, I need some of them jaunts.
The research will undoubtedly help us in making small adjustments (more whole grains instead of refined, less sweets and more fruits), but honestly I just want to buy stock in McDonald’s after seeing this graphic.
