Not surprisingly, New Yorkers are taking things just as seriously as their London counterparts and giving the ads a far from warm welcome to the Big Apple. New Yorkers unhappy with the bold weight-loss ads, which have taken over billboards and line entire subway cars, include two feminist groups, Redstockings and National Women's Liberation. While New Yorkers have been quick to deface the advertisements and decry them, the ads have yet to be officially banned in the U.S. One Direction star Louis Tomlinson has sparked outrage from health campaigners and fans after promoting a weight-loss website.

The heart-throb posted a link on Twitter directing his 13.9 million fans - who are mainly impressionable youngsters – to the Bootea site, which sells “intense” weight-loss and appetite suppressing diet supplements. Trim Louis also received messages from concerned fans, worried that he is attempting to lose weight. The ASA, an advertising watchdog organization that fielded more than 350 complaints about the Protein World campaign, has launched an investigation into whether the ads are socially irresponsible and breach the U.K. Meanwhile, the woman who appeared in the ads—23-year-old Australian model Renee Sommerfield—says the uproar is misguided.
