Vitamins are organic substances that are required by the body and must be consumed in the diet.
The human body regulates the amount of certain vitamins that are present in the bloodstream at a given time. The kidney filters the bloodstream and regulates the contents of the blood by reabsorbing certain nutrients and secreting others into the urine.
The Institute of Medicine's Dietary Reference Intakes serve as a recommendation for daily intake of vitamins from food and supplements. Becky Bell is a registered dietitian with experience in the areas of diabetes, chronic kidney disease and general nutrition.
Vitamin C and all of the B vitamins -- thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B-6, folate, vitamin B-12, biotin and pantothenic acid -- share similar characteristics because they are all water soluble.

Water-soluble vitamins undergo filtration and reabsorption by the kidney to maintain appropriate serum concentrations. The recommended dietary allowance for vitamin C is 75 milligrams per day for women and 90 milligrams for men. Bell holds a Bachelor of Science in dietetics from Olivet Nazarene University and a Master of Science in human nutrition from the University of Alabama.
The body has a limited ability to store these vitamins so they need to be continuously replenished by the diet.
When the serum level of a certain vitamin is low, the tubules of the kidney reabsorb nearly all of that vitamin and little to none is excreted in the urine. Water-soluble vitamins are absorbed by the digestive tract into the blood stream, metabolized and then excreted by the kidneys in the urine.

Vitamins are absorbed through the intestinal tract, and only a certain amount can be absorbed at one time to prevent an excessively high level in the serum. The intestinal tract absorbs nearly 100 percent of ingested vitamin C at low doses, but when a very high dose is ingested, less than 50 percent is absorbed. The NIH found that when a dose of vitamin C is given intravenously that far exceeds the recommended amount, nearly all of the administered vitamin C is excreted in the urine.
