HAMILTON - Minutes from crowded Route 130 on narrow Edgebrook Road, the home of Mercer County's first sheriff appears almost out of place.
HAMILTON -- Minutes from crowded Route 130 on narrow Edgebrook Road, the home of Mercer County's first sheriff appears almost out of place. Grafton House was moved to this quieter spot when the Hamilton Marketplace took its place beside the highway. To maintain that building, along with historic highlights Kuser Mansion and Sayen House, Hamilton will spend at least $123,000 this fiscal year even though only one of the properties -- Sayen House -- generated revenue for the public coffers. Trenton fileHamilton is investing more in its historic properties, including the Kuser Mansion shown here. Now officials are hoping to end that trend: Hamilton has begun an investment in its historic houses and catered events could soon be held at all three sites. Bencivengo had just received copies of glossy new brochures billing the three houses as "Hamilton Township Historic Rental Sites," the first step in what the administration hopes will be a successful campaign to market the trio as venues for weddings, parties, or business meetings. The largest investment this year will come at Grafton House, where the town will fund a new parking lot to accommodate the crowds officials expect.
The township council recently gave the go-ahead for a $15,000-maximum contract with Maser Consulting for the design of the lot, which is expected to be built by Hamilton employees and funded through capital reserves. The council also authorized the use of competitive contracting for food concessions at the sites, allowing the administration to solicit and evaluate caterers for each unique venue rather than simply choosing the lowest bidder.
Coordinating the initiative is Tracey Destribats, a former vice president of community banking at Yardville National Bank who was hired to a newly created special events coordinator position this year at a salary of about $55,000.
Destribats replaced Denise Zemlansky, former museum curator at Kuser Mansion, who made a salary of about $64,000. Not including bills for utilities, which were not available yesterday, Hamilton expected to spend $10,440 and $16,990 on Kuser Mansion and Grafton House, respectively, in the fiscal year than ends June 30, without any expectation of gaining the money back.
Tom Glover, the man widely considered Hamilton's historian, lauded the idea of making the historic houses more active and noted that money for needed renovations is scarce. As Sayen House and the surrounding gardens have become a popular spot for parties, Glover said the Queen Anne-style Kuser Mansion, a "jewel in the crown of Hamilton township" built in 1892, has lost some of its prominence. In recent years, Glover has volunteered to lead sing-alongs of World War II-era tunes at the park on Sundays to continue the tradition of concerts there in the past. While the larger Grafton house will cater to bigger parties, the township is envisioning Kuser as a spot for smaller meetings or luncheons.
Destribats said the second floor of the house is slated to be renovated, but the cost will remain unclear until contractors get a close look at the condition of the building.
Other projects, such as a carriage house on the Kuser property that Glover said is deteriorating, may take longer, Destribats said. A Christian theme park in Kentucky brings the ancient to life through a life-sized reconstruction of Noah’s Ark—but not without dipping into fiction. The discussion over how to parse the filmmaker in light of a sexual-assault trial 17 years ago is particularly difficult for black women.

At first, it seemed as though Nate Parker’s The Birth of a Nation couldn’t have come at a better time. The South African middle-distance runner Caster Semenya will compete in the women’s 800-meter final this Saturday in Rio de Janeiro, and she’s favored to win.
At best, her detractors will give the credit for her win to the 25-year-old's body chemistry rather than her skill.

Kalaupapa, Hawaii, is a former leprosy colony that’s still home to several of the people who were exiled there through the 1960s.
Not so long ago, people in Hawaii who were diagnosed with leprosy were exiled to an isolated peninsula attached to one of  the tiniest and least-populated islands.
On August 21, more than 11,000 Olympic athletes will leave Rio, some carrying medals, others lugging the weight of falling short of expectations. This emotional drop, in its most acute form, might be called post-Olympic depression—or, to borrow a phrase from the sports psychologist Scott Goldman, the director of the Performance Psychology Center at the University of Michigan, an under-recovery.

If Hillary Clinton wins the White House in November, it will be a historic moment, the smashing of the preeminent glass ceiling in American public life. A Clinton victory also promises to usher in four-to-eight years of the kind of down-and-dirty public misogyny you might expect from a stag party at Roger Ailes’s house. In a StoryCorps animation, Patrick Haggerty remembers the remarkable advice he got from his dairy farmer dad. Seemingly impossible details have been fanatically researched and naturalistically explained by Answers in Genesis (AiG), a literalist Christian organization that’s also responsible for the nearby Creation Museum.
It might even prompt international sporting agencies to once again rethink what it means to be a female athlete. Quite the opposite: Some have suggested she should be taking drugs in order to bring her hormone levels more closely in line with those of average women.
But according to a leaked medical test, Semenya’s testosterone levels are three times as high as those of most women, and she has internal testes instead of ovaries.
Once they all pass away, the federal government wants to open up the isolated peninsula to tourism.
Details on the history of the colony—known as Kalaupapa—for leprosy patients are murky: Fewer than 1,000 of the tombstones that span across the village’s various cemeteries are marked, many of them having succumbed to weather damage or invasive vegetation.
They include six who remain in Kalaupapa voluntarily as full-time residents, even though the quarantine was lifted in 1969—a decade after Hawaii became a state and more than two decades after drugs were developed to treat leprosy, today known as Hansen’s disease. Despite their varying degrees of success, many will have the same surprise waiting for them back home: a feeling that life suddenly seems ordinary. It describes the relationship between a person and his built environment, somewhere between the feeling of home and homeland. Featuring writing from prominent German architects, urban planners, and sociologists, Making Heimat examines how to create immigrant communities in today’s Germany, and builds on the lessons from Doug Saunders’s 2011 book, Arrival City.

Once home to the country's largest concentration of midcentury hotel architecture, the barrier island's distinctive plastic-palm facade has given way to modern condominium development. As hyperpartisanship, grievance politics, and garden-variety rage shift from America’s first black commander-in-chief onto its first female one, so too will the focus of political bigotry.
With roughly 40 percent of Americans believing in creationism, the park shouldn’t be dismissed as mere Christian kitsch. When Fox Searchlight purchased the global rights to the movie at the Sundance Film Festival for $17.5 million—a new record for the event—Parker’s ascendancy seemed unstoppable. Those who saw through my disguise assumed I made up for my youth with a fabulous education in management.
The experience of being exiled was traumatic, as was the heartbreak of abandonment, for both the patients themselves and their family members. Since August of 2015, Germany has become home to more than 1.1 million refugees, migrants, and asylum seekers. Published well before the current diaspora to Europe, Arrival City argues that the ad hoc, self-determined neighborhoods that emerge out of mass migrations, termed “arrival cities,” are integral to integrating newcomers in their destination country. America’s daughters will at last have living, breathing, pantsuit-wearing proof that they too can grow up to be president.
Some of it will be driven by genuine gender grievance or discomfort among some at being led by a woman. Rather, it represents a recent and powerful trend in evangelical thought, a kind of fundamentalist realism.
Excitement rose among black filmgoers for the film’s October release, while Parker seemed like a significant new presence in both the film and activism worlds. But records suggest that at least 8,000 individuals were forcibly removed from their families and relocated to Kalaupapa over a century starting in the 1860s. Kalaupapa is secluded by towering, treacherous sea cliffs from the rest of Molokai—an island with zero traffic lights that takes pride in its rural seclusion—and accessing it to this day remains difficult.
This influx has German architects and urban planners asking the question: “Do we have a refugee crisis on our hands? He started photographing the tourist destination nearly 10 years ago, capturing the kidney-shaped pools, the looping neon signs, and the barrage of faded colors before they were gone.
But in plenty of other cases, slamming Hillary as a bitch, a c**t (Thanks, Scott Baio!), or a menopausal nut-job (an enduringly popular theme on Twitter) will simply be an easy-peasy shortcut for dismissing her and delegitimizing her presidency. To visit the park is to see how conservative Christianity of the 21st century finds strength not simply in miracles, scripture and sermon, but in timber, mannequins, blueprints, and feasibility studies. Unfortunately, the promise of both him and his movie appears now to be too good to be true. The weightlifter from the Pacific island nation of Kiribati finished sixth in the men’s 105-kilogram Group B final. Before I took a job telling managers of large corporations things that they arguably should have known already, my work experience was limited to part-time gigs tutoring surly undergraduates in the ways of Hegel and Nietzsche and to a handful of summer jobs, mostly in the less appetizing ends of the fast-food industry.
Why didn’t everyone reconnect with loved ones and revel in the conveniences of civilization? It was “the counterintuitive twinning of loneliness and community,” wrote The New York Times in 2008.
